Some of the most memorable game mechanics do more than add a new button: they change what players can do, how familiar rules work, or what kinds of stories emerge. Here are ten distinctive examples, chosen for how meaningfully they reshape play—not as an objective ranking or a claim that each idea was the first of its kind.
What makes a game mechanic distinctive?
A mechanic stands out when it changes the choices available to a player, bends a familiar rule, connects systems in an unexpected way, or produces emergent or social consequences. The examples below span puzzles, action, role-playing and party games; their value is how well each idea serves its particular game, not whether it is universally “best.”
Spatial puzzles and time manipulation
1. Portal: paired portals turn geometry into a tool
In Portal, the player places two linked portals on eligible surfaces and can move instantly between them. Objects can pass through as well. A wall or gap is no longer simply an obstacle: portal placement makes space itself part of the puzzle, while momentum and object positioning become tools for reaching otherwise inaccessible places. The mechanic makes the environment something to reason through rather than merely traverse. An academic discussion of the Portal Gun and its role in the puzzle series is available in the paper on Portal.
2. Braid: rewind time without spending a rewind resource
Braid lets players rewind time at will, making a mistake something to inspect and revise rather than necessarily a final failure. The mechanic changes the usual relationship between action and consequence: a player can experiment with timing and learn from an outcome without treating rewind as a limited supply. Creator Jonathan Blow described the design question as: “I wanted to find out what happens when you design a game where rewind is not a resource, and there’s not a death challenge gating the game.” The quote comes from Game Developer’s account of his GDC 2010 presentation: Game Developer on Braid’s rewind mechanic.

Enemies, connections and movement
3. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor: enemies remember what you do
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor uses its Nemesis system to carry player actions forward into relationships and rivalries with enemies. A foe can return with a history tied to the player, so defeat can become the beginning of a revenge story rather than a simple reset. The system connects combat outcomes to an evolving cast of adversaries, giving encounters a personal, player-specific quality.
Design director Michael de Plater explained the guiding principle: “Every time a player does something, never shut them off,” and “Build upon [what they did]. … We can take that and build a story from it.” The bracketed words are reproduced as printed in Game Developer’s report from the DICE Summit. A developer interview also describes enemies and side missions generated around individual players, including a vendetta mission that could appear in a friend’s game after the player was killed there: Game Developer on the Nemesis system and the developer interview.

4. Death Stranding: connection as a strand-oriented idea
Death Stranding was framed by Hideo Kojima as an attempt to move beyond conventional action organized around gun combat. He also described its online component as structurally different from a separate mode added after the campaign. That makes connection—not simply another combat option—the organizing idea behind the game’s concept. The cited interview predates release, so it captures Kojima’s framing of the design rather than offering a full technical account of the finished system: the pre-release interview.
5. Gravity Rush 2: shifting gravity changes how you travel
In Gravity Rush 2, gravity shifting and different gravity styles let players fly and roam through a floating city. The mechanic turns movement into an experiment: changing how gravity acts changes how the player navigates the space. This was highlighted by developers quoted in PlayStation’s December 30, 2017 roundup, so the praise reflects their selections rather than an independent consensus: PlayStation’s developer roundup.

Games that shift genre or turn stealth into preparation
6. NieR: Automata: move between genres as play evolves
NieR: Automata shifts among shoot-’em-up play, 2.5D platforming and open-world 3D RPG action. Developers quoted in PlayStation’s roundup singled out how seamlessly these changes fit together. Rather than relying on one mode of play throughout, the game makes shifts in genre part of its changing play experience. Their comments appear in PlayStation’s 2017 roundup.
7. Horizon Zero Dawn: stealth as information and setup
A senior producer quoted in the same roundup described a favorite feature of Horizon Zero Dawn: sneaking through tall grass, scanning enemies to learn their weaknesses, setting traps and then using a slow-motion jump attack. In that description, stealth is not just hiding; it is a sequence of gathering information and preparing an approach. This is the producer’s highlighted feature, not a complete account of every stealth rule in the game: PlayStation’s developer roundup.

Social play and pacing controls
8. That’s You!: the players become the answers
That’s You! builds its central idea around questions about the people playing together. A Wish Studios developer described the concept as asking questions where “players themselves are the answers.” The group’s knowledge of one another becomes part of the game’s play, turning social familiarity into the mechanic rather than treating it as background conversation. The developer’s comment appears in PlayStation’s roundup.
9. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age: double-speed mode gives players control over pace
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age includes a double-speed mode. Producer Hiroaki Kato singled it out as a way to make an RPG’s time investment feel more manageable. It is a pacing and control feature: players can move through parts of the game faster, though how useful that feels depends on the individual player. Kato’s comment is included in PlayStation’s 2017 roundup.

A visual rule for failure
10. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice: dark rot represents game over
A creative lead quoted in PlayStation’s roundup praised the visual dark rot in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice as a way of representing game over. The notable idea here is the visual framing of failure. The cited description supports that concise point, but does not establish the system’s exact gameplay consequences: PlayStation’s developer roundup.
Why these mechanics stand out in different ways
These designs create different kinds of possibility. Portals open new spatial puzzles; rewind makes revision part of play; Nemesis connects player actions to evolving rivalries; and gravity shifting alters how movement works. Other examples make transitions between genres, preparation, group knowledge, adjustable pacing or the visual representation of failure central to the experience.
Each mechanic also reflects a design choice. A system that encourages experimentation or creates personal stories may suit one game’s goals without belonging in every game. For example, portal combat has its own balancing demands: 1047 Games CEO Ian Proulx said the time-to-kill in Splitgate needed to give players room to flank through portals while limiting escapes through them. That tradeoff helps show why an inventive mechanic is not automatically a universally suitable one: Proulx on balancing portals in Splitgate.
