The right shortlist depends on your club, budget, tactical needs and database revision. Use the names below as a starting point, then check each player’s club, role, contract, interest and asking price in your own save before committing.
How to use this shortlist
FM26 player data can change between database updates, and a player’s availability and cost also depend on the save. FM Scout says its wonderkids guide uses version 26.3 data, was updated on 15 June 2026 and is a personal recommendation list rather than an official Sports Interactive ranking. Its wonderkid criteria are potential ability of at least 150 and an in-game age of 20 or younger on 7 July 2025; ranged potential can vary between saves. Those criteria do not establish a Championship top ten, but they illustrate why database version and save context matter. Read FM Scout’s FM26 wonderkids guide.
The FM Blog Championship page lists 642 linked players, but its database estimates and attributes may vary by update and save. Its reviewed Middlesbrough squad page is a club-level sample, not a league-wide ranking. Check the FM Blog Championship profile and its Middlesbrough squad profile alongside your in-game data.
10 Championship players to investigate in your save
The available league-wide evidence does not establish ten named players with comparable current ratings, prices and availability. Rather than invent a ranking or pretend that third-party values are guaranteed transfer fees, this shortlist uses the three names confirmed in the reviewed Middlesbrough squad sample. It is a set of candidates to inspect—not a claim that all three are attainable, affordable or right for every club.

1. Hayden Hackney — central or defensive midfielder
The FM Blog Middlesbrough squad profile lists Hackney, 23, as an MC/DM. He is the clearest first check if your recruitment brief calls for a central midfielder who can also cover defensive midfield. His suitability in your save still depends on his in-game attributes, tactical role, contract and asking price; the available profile does not establish a universal fee or guarantee that Middlesbrough will sell.
There is also a real-world reason his name attracts attention: the EFL named Hackney 2026 Championship Player of the Season. That award is evidence of his real-world recognition, not proof of a particular FM26 ability rating, transfer value or fit for your tactics. See the EFL’s award report.
Rank #2
2. Leo Castledine — attacking or central midfielder
The reviewed Middlesbrough squad data lists Castledine, 19, as an AMC/MC. That makes him worth checking if you need a younger option for an attacking-midfield or central-midfield role. Inspect his attributes and role familiarity in your database rather than assuming that age alone means he is ready to start or has a particular development ceiling.
3. Dávid Strelec — striker
The same Middlesbrough squad sample lists Strelec, 24, as a striker. Check him if your squad needs a centre-forward, but judge the match to your system from his in-game attributes, preferred role, contract and availability. The reviewed evidence does not establish a fee, wage demand or guaranteed interest in a move.

Check a target before making an offer
- Confirm the database. Check the database version selected for your save and compare it with any guide you consult. A profile based on a different update may not match your game.
- Set the job description. Write down the position and tactical role you need, your wage ceiling, transfer budget and whether a loan is acceptable. This helps distinguish a useful signing from a good player who does not solve your squad’s problem.
- Inspect the player in-game. Verify the player’s current club, age, attributes, position and role familiarity, contract situation, interest in joining and listed or negotiated cost. Treat third-party value fields as reference data, not as a guaranteed asking price.
- Check the deal against your constraints. Consider total wage commitment as well as any transfer fee, and compare a permanent move with a loan if your budget or squad planning makes that relevant. Do not assume a player is available just because a database profile lists him.
- Reassess if the details differ. If your save has moved a player, changed his contract or produces a fee outside your budget, use the same role-and-budget test on other Championship candidates in your own database.
