Start with: “Hey Google, let’s play a game.” For a specific activity, try “Hey Google, play Song Quiz” or give the assistant rules for a conversational game such as Twenty Questions, riddles, or a choose-your-own-adventure story.
There is an important 2026 caveat: Google’s older Assistant game catalog has changed, and some named Actions may no longer launch. Google is also rolling out Gemini for Home, which can replace Google Assistant on compatible Google Home and Nest devices. Once a home switches, Google says it cannot switch back. The commands below use the familiar “Hey Google” wording, but results can vary by device, country, language, account, and assistant version.
Quick guide: which game should you try?
| Game | What to say | Best for | Screen? | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Song Quiz | “Play Song Quiz” | Music fans and parties | No, if available | Historically documented |
| Are You Feeling Lucky? | “Play Are You Feeling Lucky” | Casual trivia | No, if available | Historically documented |
| Mad Libs | “Play Mad Libs” | Families and children | No, if available | Historically documented |
| Escape the Room | “Play Escape the Room” | Puzzle fans | Usually audio-first | Historically documented |
| Twenty Questions | “Let’s play 20 Questions” | One player or families | No | Conversational prompt |
| Riddle challenge | “Give me a riddle” | Quick solo play | No | Conversational prompt |
| Would You Rather? | “Ask one question at a time” | Groups | No | Conversational prompt |

| Choose-your-own-adventure | “Create a short adventure game” | Families and imaginative play | No | Gemini-style prompt |
“Historically documented” means Google publicly described the game or Action in the past. It does not guarantee that the experience remains available everywhere in 2026.
1. Song Quiz
Try saying: “Hey Google, play Song Quiz.”
Song Quiz plays a music clip and asks players to identify the song or artist. If the experience offers options such as a decade or genre, those can make it easier to match the game to the group.

#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
It is a strong party choice because everyone can guess aloud, but availability is uncertain. Google listed Song Quiz in its historical Assistant game guide; today, the command might launch the game, start music, return a search result, or produce an “I can’t find that game” response.
Best for: Music fans, families, and groups.
2. Are You Feeling Lucky?
Try saying: “Hey Google, play Are You Feeling Lucky?”
This is a general-knowledge trivia experience that Google previously identified as an Assistant voice game. It suits casual groups because players can answer quickly without needing a controller or display.
The title can be confused with Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” search feature. If the assistant searches instead of starting a game, try “Hey Google, let’s play Are You Feeling Lucky.” If that still fails, use a direct conversational request: “Give us a ten-question general-knowledge quiz, one question at a time.”
3. Mad Libs
Try saying: “Hey Google, play Mad Libs.”
Mad Libs asks players for words such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and names, then places them into a silly story. It is one of the better audio-only formats because the game naturally works through spoken prompts.
Google published a developer case study confirming that Mad Libs was a real Google Assistant Action, not merely a suggested activity. However, that historical documentation does not prove the Action is still live in every region. If it will not launch, ask the assistant to create a child-friendly fill-in-the-blank story and request one word at a time.
Best for: Children, families, and groups who want something funny rather than competitive.
4. Escape the Room
Try saying: “Hey Google, play Escape the Room.”

Escape the Room is a spoken puzzle or adventure in which players solve clues to escape. It is a natural fit for older children, teenagers, and adults who prefer problem-solving to trivia.

Google included Escape the Room among its Assistant entertainment experiences. Treat the detailed mechanics as version-dependent: an available Action may offer fixed puzzles, while another response may simply provide a general story or search result.
5. Twenty Questions
Try saying: “Hey Google, let’s play 20 Questions. I’m thinking of an animal.”
Ask the assistant to guess an object, animal, person, or place by asking yes-or-no questions. Because this is a conversational prompt rather than a guaranteed named Action, explain the rules clearly.
If the assistant does not begin asking questions, say: “Ask me yes-or-no questions until you guess what I’m thinking of. You have 20 questions.” A human can keep count and correct the assistant if it forgets earlier answers.
Best for: One player, a parent and child, or a small group.
6. Riddle challenge
Try saying: “Hey Google, give me a riddle, but don’t tell me the answer until I guess. Give me three guesses.”
This works well when you need a game that starts immediately and ends after a few minutes. Add constraints such as “make it kid-friendly,” “use an animal theme,” or “make it difficult for adults.”

- EASE INTO THE DAY - Set up an Alexa routine that gently wakes you with music and gradual light. Glance at the time, check reminders, or ask Alexa for weather updates.
- KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.
The assistant presents two choices, and players answer and explain their reasoning. It is best viewed as asking the assistant to host a game, not launching an official Google game.
For children, add “Use age-appropriate questions” and avoid prompts involving danger, humiliation, private information, or unsafe challenges. Have a person track the score if scoring matters; an AI host may forget it.

8. Animal-sound guessing
Try saying: “Hey Google, play an animal-sound guessing game.”
You can also say, “Make an animal sound and let me guess the animal.” Google has historically documented that Assistant can play animal sounds, but that is not the same as confirming a dedicated animal-sound game.
The assistant may produce one sound without managing turns or scoring. For preschoolers, that is still useful: let an adult act as scorekeeper and ask for easy animals, one at a time.
9. Word association
Try saying: “Hey Google, let’s play word association. You say a word, I’ll answer with the first word I think of.”
Players alternate words linked by meaning, sound, category, or personal association. Tell the assistant to keep turns short and announce whose turn it is. You can also specify “Use simple words for a child” or “Use video-game terms.”
This depends on conversational context rather than a dedicated game Action. If the assistant gives a definition or search result, repeat the rules in one sentence and start with “Your first word is…”
10. Make-your-own adventure or story game
Try saying: “Hey Google, create a short choose-your-own-adventure game. Give me two choices at each step and remember my decisions.”

Google presents Gemini for Home as a more natural conversational assistant and creative collaborator capable of story creation. This is an AI-hosted activity, not a catalogued Google Assistant game, so the assistant may forget decisions, change rules, or produce a different story on another device.
How to start and control a game
For a general discovery attempt, say:
“Hey Google, let’s play a game.”
For a named title, try these versions:
- “Hey Google, play [game name].”
- “Hey Google, let’s play [game name].”
- “Hey Google, what games can you play?”
The last request may return a current recommendation, a generic answer, or no useful list depending on the assistant version and rollout status.
If several speakers are nearby, target one by name:
“Hey Google, play Song Quiz on the kitchen speaker.”

Google documents device names as a way to direct requests to a particular speaker or display. Useful controls include:
- “Hey Google, louder.”
- “Hey Google, set volume to 40 percent.”
- “Hey Google, pause.”
- “Hey Google, resume.”
- “Hey Google, stop.”
Named Actions versus conversational games
Older named Actions can feel more like conventional games when they work: they may have fixed rules, audio, and a defined flow. Their weakness is availability. They can disappear, behave differently by region or language, or stop responding after changes to Google’s assistant platform.
Conversational games are more adaptable and better aligned with Gemini for Home’s natural-language and follow-up capabilities. Their weakness is consistency: improvised games may repeat questions, lose track of turns, miscount scores, or drift away from the rules.
For trivia, word association, and story games, ask the assistant to keep score but have a human verify it.

What works on which device?
The speaker-focused activities above are intended for Google Home and Nest speakers such as the Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Audio, Nest Mini, and Google Home Mini, as well as compatible third-party Assistant speakers where support remains available. Google says Gemini for Home compatibility covers Google Home and Nest speakers and displays released since 2016, subject to firmware, language, country, and feature limitations. That does not mean every game works identically on every device.
A Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max can add visual experiences, but displays should not be confused with audio-only speakers. Google historically promoted titles such as Guess the Drawing and Puzzle of the Day for Smart Displays. They belong in the “bonus” category, not the core speaker list, and their historical promotion does not guarantee current availability.
If a game will not launch
- Repeat the exact game name.
- Try “Let’s play…” instead of “Play…”.
- Name the target speaker.
- Move closer to the intended device if multiple devices respond.
- Check that the device is online and linked in the Google Home app.
- Ask “What can you do?” or “What games can you play?”
- Try a conversational prompt instead of an old named Action.
- If the home recently upgraded to Gemini for Home, expect some older Assistant Actions to behave differently or disappear.
- For child use, check Family Link, Voice Match, Digital Wellbeing, and third-party Action restrictions.
Google notes that some Assistant queries do not work on every device or in every language. Children can play games, but some non-Google Actions may be restricted unless they carry Google’s “For families” badge. Availability can also depend on the supervised account and household settings.
Which Google device is best for these games?
You do not need new hardware for basic riddles, trivia, word association, or story prompts if your current compatible speaker works.
- New-device option: The Google Home Speaker (2026) is designed around Gemini for Home. Google announced a $99.99 price and June 25 shelf availability, while the Store listing advertises six months of Google Home Premium as a stated $60 value. Prices, bundles, and availability can change.
- Compact audio-only option: The Google Nest Mini (2nd generation) is suitable for hands-free games but cannot display visual content. Do not assume a current price without checking the live Store listing.
- Larger-room audio: The Google Nest Audio can make spoken questions and music easier for a group to hear, but it does not inherently provide more games than a smaller compatible speaker.
- Display option: A Google Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max may support visual experiences unavailable on speakers. Do not assume every historical Smart Display game remains live.
Google Home Premium may be relevant to advanced Gemini features, especially longer creative interactions, but do not buy a subscription merely to play basic riddles, trivia, word association, or similar prompts. The availability of advanced features can vary by plan and region.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do these games work on every Google Home speaker?
No. Availability depends on the device, language, country, assistant version, account, and whether an older Action is still live. Conversational prompts are generally more flexible, but their responses are less predictable.
Can I play Google Assistant games without a screen?
Yes, Song Quiz, trivia, Mad Libs-style play, riddles, Twenty Questions, word association, animal sounds, and story games are audio-first formats. Visual titles such as Guess the Drawing are intended for compatible Smart Displays.
Why did a game stop working after switching to Gemini for Home?
Gemini for Home may not launch older Assistant Actions with the same phrases. Google says a home upgraded to Gemini for Home cannot switch back to Google Assistant, so use a conversational alternative such as Twenty Questions or a custom story prompt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Bottom Line
Try Song Quiz for music fans, Mad Libs or animal sounds for families, and Are You Feeling Lucky? or Would You Rather? for adults and groups. If an old named game fails, switch to a clearly worded conversational prompt—especially Twenty Questions, riddles, or a custom adventure—because those formats are less dependent on the shrinking legacy Action catalog.
