10 Games That Handle Permadeath Well

Permadeath can mean a fallen recruit, a restarted run, or a save wiped on death. These ten games make those stakes play very differently.

The best games with permadeath make the stakes clear: a character might be gone for good, a run may restart, or an entire save can be at risk. Those are very different kinds of loss. These ten games use permanent consequences in distinct ways, from tactical squad decisions to optional one-life challenges, and each gives players a different balance of danger, control, and carryover.

What permadeath means in these games

“Permadeath” can describe several rules. A fallen recruit may be gone while the campaign continues; a death may end the current run; or a full save may be erased. Some games make this central to ordinary play, while others confine it to a selectable or added challenge mode.

To choose the right fit, consider what you stand to lose, whether you can adjust the rule, how clearly the game communicates danger, and what survives a failure. A tactical game with visible enemy plans creates a different kind of pressure from a one-life survival world or a high-speed action campaign.

10 games with permadeath worth playing

1. Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Fire Emblem’s character losses can sting because named allies become part of the player’s attachment to the story and the tactical roster. Losing a unit can also leave a role difficult to replace. The permadeath rule can be adjusted, making this a strong choice for players who want the emotional weight of character risk but would rather tune how punishing it is. GameSpot’s roundup discusses the series’ character-loss stakes and adjustable approach.

2. XCOM 2

In XCOM 2, a soldier’s death is a campaign problem, not just a bad result in one battle. The resistance needs a growing roster, and losing experienced soldiers can make later missions harder. That makes each deployment a consequential squad-tactics decision: bring the best people and risk them, or protect the roster and accept a weaker team. It suits players who want persistent campaign consequences tied to tactical choices. GameSpot highlights the cost of losing soldiers and the importance of roster growth.

3. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard — “Ethan Must Die”

“Ethan Must Die” is an added challenge mode, not the standard Resident Evil 7 campaign rule. It removes checkpoints: dying sends the player back to the start. Randomized crates keep some uncertainty in the attempt, while enemy and trap placements are fixed, so players can learn the layout as they improve. This is best for people who know the base game and want a severe, restart-heavy test rather than a first-pass story experience. GameSpot’s mode overview describes the checkpoint and placement details.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.

4. Tactics Ogre: Reborn

Tactics Ogre: Reborn makes tactical preparation matter, but its rewind feature can undo short-term mistakes. That safeguard changes the texture of permadeath: a disastrous decision need not immediately become an irreversible loss, yet players still have to think ahead and use the system rather than treating every risk as consequence-free. It is a fit for tactical RPG players who value planning but appreciate a way to correct a blunder. GameSpot notes both the challenge and the rewind mechanic.

5. Darkest Dungeon

Darkest Dungeon treats the party as a fragile roster to manage, not a collection of invulnerable heroes. Adventurers face attrition, stress, and disease as well as the risk of death, so a successful player needs a bench and a plan for replacing people who cannot continue. Red Hook describes it as a challenging gothic roguelike turn-based RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring and the work of recruiting, training, and leading flawed heroes. Red Hook’s official game page sets out that premise. Choose it if you enjoy managing a team through cumulative pressure more than preserving one fixed cast.

6. DOOM Eternal — Ultra-Nightmare

Ultra-Nightmare is an optional, high-difficulty mode in which dying puts campaign progress at risk of being wiped out. The fast first-person action makes it unlike the turn-based examples here: survival depends on executing under pressure, not slowly weighing a squad’s next move. It is for players seeking a precision challenge who accept that a mistake can cost a whole campaign attempt. GameSpot’s roundup identifies Ultra-Nightmare as the campaign-wipe challenge mode.

7. Minecraft — Hardcore mode

Hardcore turns Minecraft’s survival sandbox into a one-life challenge. A mistake can end the world/save, so preparation and knowledge of the game’s systems matter as much as improvisation. This describes Hardcore mode, not ordinary Minecraft play. It suits players who want to build and explore with lasting stakes, especially if they enjoy making a plan before venturing into danger. GameSpot includes Hardcore as the game’s permadeath option.

8. Diablo IV — Hardcore mode

Diablo IV’s Hardcore mode is an optional high-stakes version of the action RPG: the cited roundup describes death as permanently deleting the save. That makes character growth and combat risk inseparable, a sharper contrast to the game’s regular play than a rule applied to every player by default. Pick it if you want action-RPG progression where survival is the condition for keeping that character’s journey. GameSpot’s overview describes the mode’s save-loss consequence.

9. Spelunky 2

Spelunky 2 restarts a run from the beginning when the player dies. The journal records discoveries, however, so the player can carry knowledge of hazards into the next attempt. That split—little in-run protection but durable learning—makes each failure informative without making the run itself less disposable. It works especially well for players who like short, demanding attempts and learning a game’s dangers through repetition. GameSpot describes both the run reset and journal discoveries.

  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.

10. Into the Breach

Into the Breach makes danger readable: enemies signal their attacks, and the player’s task is to find a response before damage lands. A pilot can travel forward on the timeline, and unlocks provide longer-term progression, so a failed attempt need not erase every trace of progress. Its mix of clear tactical threats and limited carryover makes it a useful choice for players who want each turn to feel consequential without making every loss equally final. Subset Games’ official page describes the game’s tactical premise, while GameSpot discusses its pilot and unlock carryover.

Which kind of permadeath fits you?

What you want Good fit What is at stake
Squad attachment and lasting campaign consequences XCOM 2 A soldier can be lost, affecting the resistance campaign and its roster.
Character loss you can tune Fire Emblem: Three Houses Important characters can be lost, but the permadeath rule can be adjusted.
Roster and resource pressure Darkest Dungeon Attrition, stress, disease, and deaths press you to maintain and manage a bench.
High-speed action with campaign-level stakes DOOM Eternal: Ultra-Nightmare Death can wipe campaign progress in this optional challenge mode.
Short tactical attempts with some carryover Into the Breach A failed attempt can cost progress, while a carried pilot and unlocks preserve some continuity.
A one-life survival sandbox Minecraft: Hardcore A mistake can end the world/save in this mode.
Run resets that teach through repetition Spelunky 2 Death restarts the run; journal discoveries help the player learn.
Action-RPG stakes attached to an optional mode Diablo IV: Hardcore The cited roundup describes a permanent save deletion on death in Hardcore mode.
A punishing challenge after learning the base game Resident Evil 7: “Ethan Must Die” Death returns the player to the start of the added mode.
Tactical RPG challenge with a short-term safety valve Tactics Ogre: Reborn Preparation matters, and the rewind feature can reverse short-term mistakes.

Why some permadeath systems feel fairer than others

Permanent loss is most compelling when players can understand the danger and see how their decisions shape it. Into the Breach’s signaled enemy attacks give the player information to act on; Darkest Dungeon makes the management problem explicit through recruitment, training, and a fragile roster. By contrast, a one-life mode can deliberately make survival itself the test, as Hardcore Minecraft does. These are different design goals, not a single scale from easy to hard.

Game Developer’s staff article, “Creating a traditional roguelike to a wider audience — a step into the darkness,” published September 1, 2021, frames the intent this way: “Permadeath is a conscious design choice to make player’s choices really matter.” The article also discusses avoiding obscure instant-death situations and offering a non-permadeath option for players who do not want irreversible loss. Read the Game Developer article.

Also consider: Baldur’s Gate 3 Honour Mode

Baldur’s Gate 3 is an alternative for players who want a sprawling party RPG. Ordinary party members can be resurrected, so it is not a straightforward example of characters staying dead. Honour Mode changes the stakes: a full party wipe deletes the save. Treat that as a mode-specific campaign challenge, not the game’s default character-death rule. GameSpot’s roundup covers the distinction.
