If you like Once Human for its mix of survival, exploration, combat, and building, the best alternative depends on which part you want more of. Palworld is the clearest pick for creature companions and automation; Valheim suits cooperative exploration and base-building. The other games below branch into fantasy survival, player-versus-player competition, zombies, supernatural combat, settlement-building, and prehistoric creatures. None is a direct substitute for every part of Once Human.
What makes a game feel like Once Human?
Once Human’s Steam listing presents a post-apocalyptic survival game built around monster fights, exploration, resource competition, weapon customization, territory building, and multiplayer. Its official site also highlights anomalies as tools for exploration, shelter automation, and combat. That range is why these recommendations are organized by the kind of overlap you want, rather than presented as a definitive ranking.
10 games to try, by the part of Once Human you enjoy
1. Palworld — for companions and automation
Palworld is the strongest fit if you enjoy collecting unusual creatures and want them to be part of your survival routine. Its Steam description frames it as an open-world multiplayer survival-crafting game: Pals can fight, help you travel, farm, and automate production. That companion-and-workforce loop is distinct from Once Human’s anomaly systems, but it makes Palworld a natural choice if you want creatures to be more than enemies.
2. Valheim — for co-op, exploration, and building
Valheim trades Once Human’s modern apocalypse for a Viking-inspired, procedurally generated world. Steam describes it as a co-op survival game for 1–10 players, making it a good option if exploring, fighting, surviving, and building alongside others matter more to you than the setting.

#1 Best Overall
- LEARN THE HUMAN BODY THROUGH PLAY: Core Five is a fast-paced STEM card game that teaches kids ages 6+ real anatomy — organ location, function, and fun facts — without it ever feeling like a lesson.
- PERFECT FOR FAMILY GAME NIGHT & HOMESCHOOL: A go-to educational card game for family game nights, homeschooling, and classrooms — screen-free learning the whole family enjoys together.
- 56 CARDS, 8 ORGANS, ENDLESS FUN: Each card covers organ location, importance, what helps or hurts it, and related medical professions — real science content packed into quick, replayable rounds.
- SIMPLE RULES, FAST ROUNDS: Collect 5 cards and shout "Core Five" (or 6 in Bonus Mode) — easy enough for ages 6+ to learn in minutes, engaging enough for repeat play.
- BONUS KNOWLEDGE ROUND: Winners ask an organ question to the table — first correct answer scores bonus points, turning every game into an extra round of learning.
3. Enshrouded — for fantasy survival and dangerous exploration
Enshrouded is a fantasy survival action RPG for players who want building and exploration in a hazardous world, but would rather leave the post-apocalyptic backdrop behind. It is a genre-level match, not a claim that its specific systems mirror Once Human.
4. Rust — for competition with other players
Rust is worth considering if the survival setting appeals but you want human competition to take center stage. Its Steam listing supports the multiplayer-survival comparison; whether that environment suits you will depend on the experience offered by the servers you choose.

- People are strange: we looked through the Internet and collected a load of totally-genuine, totally-weird web searches. So we decided to make a party game out of it.
- Think like a human: each round, you'll hear the first half of an internet search, like 'did dinosaurs...'. It's your job to try and figure out what came next
- Did dinosaurs go to heaven?: The higher your answers rank, the more points you'll score for you and your team - so don't be afraid to think a little weird.
- Easy to learn, quick to play: a party game for adults and teenagers, this one takes about 2 minutes to learn and 20 to play. Recommended for 3+ players and ages 14+.
- What people said: 'for once you'll be glad you didn't delete your internet history!' - @tabletopmag
5. Project Zomboid — for zombie-outbreak survival horror
Project Zomboid shifts the focus to survival horror during a zombie outbreak. Choose it for a harsher, slower-feeling alternative built around surviving that premise—not for a close match to Once Human’s supernatural action.
6. V Rising — for supernatural survival and combat
V Rising gives survival a vampire-fantasy frame. It shares an otherworldly mood with Once Human, but its fantasy setting and combat identity make it a different kind of supernatural alternative.
Rank #3
7. Conan Exiles — for settling in a hostile world
Conan Exiles is a better fit if your favorite part is building a home and surviving in a dangerous open world. Its setting and tone are a pronounced departure from Once Human; the appeal here is the settlement-building direction, not a one-to-one gameplay match.
8. ARK: Survival Evolved — for creatures and exploration
ARK: Survival Evolved centers survival in a world of dinosaurs and other primeval creatures. It overlaps with Once Human on creature threats and exploration, while offering a distinctly different setting and game loop.

- FAST & ADDICTIVE PARTY GAME: Skull card game plays in 30 minutes with 3-6 players. Rounds are quick and tense, keeping adults and teens engaged and eager for just one more round all night
- GREAT FOR ALL GROUP SIZES: Light enough for casual adult party games, deep enough for strategy lovers. Skull board game delivers thrills, laughter, and tense moments at any gathering or party
- THE ESSENTIAL ADULT PARTY GAME: If you love bluffing, social deduction, and outplaying your friends, Skull is the most elegant, portable party game for adults you will ever own - pure psychology, zero filler
9. Choose Palworld if your priority is a base with useful companions
If the appeal you want to preserve is having creatures contribute to life around your base, Palworld is the more targeted recommendation. Its listed roles for Pals—combat, traversal, farming, and production automation—make the reason for that choice clear.
10. Choose Valheim if your priority is a shared survival adventure
If what you want is to explore, fight, survive, and build with friends, Valheim is the more targeted option. Its co-op listing and Viking setting make it a distinct alternative rather than another post-apocalyptic imitation.
