There is no objective, universally accepted ranking of the hardest video games. This list is an editorial synthesis of player-rated difficulty scores and published analysis, weighing execution, punishment for failure, hidden or adaptive rules, and whether the challenge applies to the main game or an optional mode. The order is a guide to different kinds of difficulty—not proof that one game is harder for every player than the next.
How this ranking judges difficulty
“Hard” can describe very different demands: precise timing, scarce chances to recover, unfamiliar systems, or an extreme optional mode. Player scores offer one view of reputation, but they are votes from a particular site’s respondents, not population-wide surveys or completion-rate data. For example, How Difficult Is It? displays ratings and vote counts, while retrospective criticism and game guides explain challenge mechanics without measuring how many players finish.
Each ranking note identifies the main kind of challenge and, where relevant, whether the example relies on a special mode. The six scores below are the site’s displayed figures accessed in 2026; they can change over time.

Battletoads is a strong opening pick because its difficulty is not confined to one notorious encounter: it shifts between different kinds of obstacles and demands consistency as the game progresses. How Difficult Is It? displayed a 9.2/10 rating from 33 player ratings in 2026, the highest score among the games in this list. That small respondent pool is evidence of a reputation on that site, not a universal verdict.

Ghosts ’n Goblins (1985) — little room to recover
Challenge type: action-platforming and survival. Scope: the full completion route.
The Guardian’s retrospective describes a game where a single hit costs the hero his armor, enemies behave unpredictably, and some power-ups can mislead rather than help. Reaching what looks like the ending is not enough: the final stretch must be replayed at a higher difficulty. The result is a challenge built around both execution and the cost of mistakes, not just a difficult boss.

Ikaruga (2001) — precision under pressure
Challenge type: shoot ’em up. Scope: the game’s demanding shooter play.
Ikaruga appears on How Difficult Is It? with a 9.1/10 score from 34 ratings in 2026. Its place here represents a different sort of difficulty from a platformer or action game: staying composed and making precise decisions amid a dense stream of threats. The rating is a useful signal of respondent reputation, but it does not establish a cross-genre measurement proving Ikaruga harder than every other game.

The Guardian singles out Ultra mode for its screen-filling bullet patterns, while cautioning that “hardest” is subjective. That qualification matters: this entry points to an extreme mode, not a claim that every first playthrough is equally punishing. It is a test of reaction, positioning, and reading crowded patterns.

Battle Garegga’s difficulty responds to player behavior. The Guardian notes that controlling its rank can involve avoiding power-ups and even losing lives intentionally. Those choices can feel counterintuitive: surviving in the moment is not always the same as managing the challenge effectively over time. The game asks players to understand the system as well as dodge and shoot.

PlayStation’s guide emphasizes concentration and finesse in Sekiro’s boss fights, and notes that players cannot call on other people to help defeat bosses. Deflections and posture pressure make learning an opponent’s timing central to success. How Difficult Is It? displayed 8.6/10 from 56 ratings in 2026. Sekiro’s difficulty is not simply interchangeable with that of other FromSoftware games: its combat asks players to meet its particular timing demands.

Cuphead (2017) — multi-stage boss precision
Challenge type: run-and-gun action with bullet-hell elements. Scope: its multi-stage bosses.
PlayStation describes Cuphead’s boss encounters as multi-stage fights that combine bullet-hell patterns with a need for patience and careful timing. The challenge rewards recognizing patterns and making accurate moves under pressure. Its inclusion also shows that punishing precision is not limited to games commonly grouped as Soulslikes.
What this list does—and does not—say
The ranking compares different forms of difficulty, not identical tests. A high score from a player-rating site cannot be directly compared with a game guide’s description of one boss or an editorial account of an optional mode. Nor do the sources establish a named, independent completion-rate dataset for these ten games. Treat the order as a reasoned selection of demanding experiences, not a scientific league table.

Several notable challenges fall just outside this ten. The Guardian’s discussion includes Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, and Ninja Gaiden II, including the latter’s Master Ninja mode. PlayStation highlights Celeste’s optional content as a much harder execution challenge, while also noting its Assist Mode. These examples underline why it helps to distinguish a game’s standard path from optional extremes. In a PlayStation Blog Q&A about Dark Souls, director Hidetaka Miyazaki said, “With Dark Souls, we don’t want to decrease the difficulty at all. Actually, we intend to increase the difficulty of the game.” In the same answer, he describes giving players freedom to strategize and conquer that difficulty: challenge is paired with room to find a way through.
