For the 2026–27 NBA season, the clearest training-camp watch list is the first ten picks in the 2026 lottery. Their draft positions make them natural names to follow, but do not guarantee the most productive rookie seasons: minutes, team needs and how quickly each player adjusts will shape their roles. Here are the specific questions camp can begin to answer.
How to read this watch list
This is an editorial selection based on draft position and the NBA’s September 15, 2026 preview—not a ranking or prediction of which rookies will produce the most. The league notes that 39 of the past 40 Kia Rookie of the Year winners came from the top 14 lottery slots; that is historical context, not a guarantee for any player here. Training-camp roles remain provisional, and the three useful questions for each rookie are opportunity, role clarity and the adjustment his team needs him to make.
Summer League results and college statistics offer clues, not regular-season forecasts. The NBA rookie roundtable, updated July 16, surfaced AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson and Cameron Boozer among the rookies’ own early Rookie of the Year picks; those are opinions, not projections.
Which NBA rookies should I watch this season?
1. AJ Dybantsa, Washington Wizards — how much creation is his to own?
The No. 1 pick joins a young Wizards roster with Trae Young and Anthony Davis counted on for leadership. The NBA preview reported that Dybantsa scored about a point per minute in Las Vegas Summer League, an eye-catching but limited sample. At camp, watch how Washington divides creation and responsibility between Dybantsa and its veteran leaders. In the July rookie roundtable, multiple rookies named him as an early Rookie of the Year possibility; Dybantsa named Peterson.

2. Darryn Peterson, Utah Jazz — can he show more than scoring?
The No. 2 pick is a 6-foot-5 guard. The NBA’s central question is whether Peterson can demonstrate an all-around game while sharing the floor with Lauri Markkanen, Keyonte George and Jaren Jackson Jr. Camp should offer the first clues about how he fits among those established options and what he can contribute beyond putting the ball in the basket. His name also came up in rookies’ early award picks.
3. Cameron Boozer, Memphis Grizzlies — how large is the opening?
The No. 3 pick is listed by the NBA at 6-foot-9 and 253 pounds, and arrived as a college Player of the Year. Memphis’s reconfigured roster could give him room for minutes and usage; the NBA preview also noted his Summer League first-team recognition and praised his smarts and shooting. The camp question is how much of that opportunity becomes a defined role. Boozer called Wilson a likely team focal point, while Kingston Flemings also pointed to Boozer’s opportunity.

4. Caleb Wilson, Chicago Bulls — can ambition become an early role?
The No. 4 pick is a 6-foot-10 forward. Wilson has publicly said he wants to win Rookie of the Year and lead a Bulls resurgence. Those are ambitions, not evidence of what his rotation role will be. A concrete early-season measuring point is Chicago’s meeting with Dybantsa’s Wizards: it will put two of the highest picks in the same game, though it cannot by itself settle how either rookie’s season will go.
5. Keaton Wagler, LA Clippers — where does he fit beside Darius Garland?
The No. 5 pick is a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Illinois. The NBA preview identifies playing alongside Garland as Wagler’s biggest test. In camp, look for how the staff explores his off-ball shooting and ball-handling around Garland. That is a question to watch, not a confirmed rotation plan.

6. Mikel Brown Jr., Brooklyn Nets — can he make the simple play under pressure?
The No. 6 pick is a 6-foot-5 point guard from Louisville. The NBA preview reports that former NBA All-Star Rajon Rondo mentored him and held film sessions with him. Brown recalled Rondo’s advice: “Make the simple play.” Camp will show how Brown organizes the offense and makes decisions when NBA-level pressure takes away his first option.
7. Darius Acuff Jr., Sacramento Kings — what backcourt opportunity opens up?
The No. 7 pick is an Arkansas guard. The NBA preview sees possible backcourt opportunity in Sacramento after DeMar DeRozan’s departure. Acuff averaged 19.0 points and 5.3 assists across three Las Vegas Summer League games, a small sample that should not be treated as a regular-season forecast. The practical camp question is how he competes for a place in the Kings’ backcourt and what responsibilities he can handle.

8. Kingston Flemings, Atlanta Hawks — how crowded is the path to minutes?
The No. 8 pick averaged 16.1 points per game at Houston, with a 3-to-1 assists-to-turnovers ratio and 39% three-point shooting, according to the NBA preview. Atlanta’s backcourt is crowded, so camp competition will matter as much as the résumé. Watch how the Hawks balance his development and learning with the possibility of immediate minutes.
9. Morez Johnson Jr., Dallas Mavericks — can versatility become a specific job?
The No. 9 pick is a Michigan forward. His Michigan coach, Dusty May, also joined Dallas; the NBA preview quoted May describing Johnson’s positional versatility, including the ability to guard all five positions. That range may be useful, but it does not define a role by itself. Watch which matchups or assignments Dallas gives him as camp progresses.

10. Brayden Burries, Milwaukee Bucks — how much playing time does the rebuild create?
The No. 10 pick is a 6-foot-4 guard from Arizona. The NBA preview calls him Milwaukee’s highest-profile addition to its rebuild and anticipates substantial playing time; it also reports that he averaged 16.1 points per game at Arizona. Camp will help clarify what responsibilities the Bucks give him. Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd described Burries this way: “There’s nothing wrong with being a great human being off the court and being a killer on the court. He definitely has that combination.”
