Tech Times’ July 23, 2021 roundup named 10 NFT games spanning creature battles, trading-card strategy, action RPGs, open-world RPGs and virtual worlds. Its “Diablo-like” and “Skyrim-like” labels were loose genre comparisons for two entries—not evidence that they matched those games in quality, or recommendations for what to play today.
What the 2021 list represents
The list is a snapshot of how Tech Times framed NFT games on July 23, 2021. Its ordering reflects that article’s presentation at the time, not a current ranking, a measure of game quality or a guide to present-day availability. The descriptions below preserve the article’s genre hooks while distinguishing what the games were said to involve.
The 10 games and their reported formats
| Game | How the 2021 roundup framed it | What players do | On-chain details established here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Axie Infinity | Creature battling | Players use creatures in battles. Ethereum.org currently categorizes Axie Infinity: Classic as strategy, card-deck-building and turn-based. | The cited sources do not establish the specific on-chain assets for this comparison. |
| Splinterlands | Trading-card game | Choose cards and build a team; battles are automated. Splinterlands describes itself as “the original NFT trading card game,” a claim made by the game itself. | Its official documentation describes player-held Hive NFTs, including cards. |
| Gods Unchained | A game similar to Hearthstone | Its current category on Ethereum.org is strategy/card-deck-building. | The cited sources do not establish the specific on-chain assets for this comparison. |
| The Sandbox | Virtual-world game | The 2021 roundup included it among NFT games; the available material does not detail its play loop. | The cited sources do not establish which assets are on-chain. |
| Decentraland | Virtual world | Explore and participate in a virtual world; the roundup uses the virtual-world framing. | The cited sources do not specify the assets relevant to this comparison. |
| Lost Relics | “Diablo-like” action RPG | The comparison signals an action-RPG influence; it does not establish equivalent gameplay quality or a current recommendation. | The cited sources do not establish which assets are on-chain. |
| The Six Dragons | “Skyrim”-like blockchain NFT game | The comparison suggests an open-world RPG, but does not establish that it plays like Skyrim in quality or scope. | The cited sources do not establish which assets are on-chain. |
| CryptoKitties | NFT game | The roundup names it, but the available descriptions do not establish its gameplay details for this comparison. | The cited sources do not establish which assets are on-chain. |
| My Crypto Heroes | NFT game | The roundup names it, but the available descriptions do not establish its gameplay details for this comparison. | The cited sources do not establish which assets are on-chain. |
| F1 Delta Time | NFT game | The roundup names it, but the available descriptions do not establish its gameplay details for this comparison. | The cited sources do not establish which assets are on-chain. |
For Splinterlands, its official documentation describes a fast trading-card game with player-held Hive NFTs, card selection and automated battles. The phrase “original NFT trading card game” is Splinterlands’ own description, not an independently verified industry-wide distinction.
What the genre comparisons do—and do not—tell you
“Diablo-like” refers to Lost Relics and “Skyrim-like” to The Six Dragons in the 2021 article. Treat those as shorthand for broad RPG styles, not as claims of equivalent combat, world design, production values or lasting playability. The roundup’s other hooks are similarly broad: it calls Axie Infinity creature battling, Splinterlands a trading-card game, Gods Unchained similar to Hearthstone, and Decentraland a virtual world.

#1 Best Overall
- 1 - Figure
- Headstrong Padawan hero with lightning-fast dual Lightsabers.
- From Star Wars Twilight of the Republic
These labels help sort unlike games, but they do not make the list a direct comparison of mechanics. A card battler, an action RPG and a virtual world ask players to do different things. The historical article also does not establish current access, pricing, or the present utility of each game’s tokens and NFTs.
Historical market figures are not earnings guidance
A 2023 SEC-hosted filing, citing NonFungible, reports that NFT games generated more than $5 billion in revenue in 2021 and that Axie Infinity represented approximately 66% of that market that year. The same filing attributes a separate figure of $2.32 billion in NFT game revenue in Q3 2021 to Blockchain Game Alliance data. These are historical estimates with different stated sources and periods; the quarterly figure should not be added to or treated as interchangeable with the annual figure. Neither says what players earned, predicts future demand or establishes current market share. Read the SEC-hosted filing.

How to interpret availability and NFT ownership
Being recorded on a blockchain does not guarantee that a game’s servers, marketplace or utility will continue to operate. A 2026 retrospective warns that a token may remain on-chain even after the supporting game or its use disappears. It reports continued updates for Axie Infinity, Splinterlands, Gods Unchained and The Sandbox, but it is secondary reporting—not a complete status audit. Check a game’s own official site for current access and purchase instructions rather than relying on a 2021 list or on-chain ownership alone. Read the 2026 retrospective.
Ethereum.org’s game directory currently categorizes Gods Unchained as strategy/card-deck-building and Axie Infinity: Classic as strategy/card-deck-building/turn-based. That directory is not a complete audit of whether every title in Tech Times’ roundup remains playable. See Ethereum.org’s gaming directory.

- Do not assume a past “play-to-earn” model guarantees income now or in the future.
- An NFT may have no buyer, no useful function outside its game, or no practical use if the game closes.
- Verify a game’s current status, platform requirements and any purchase terms directly with its official source.
