This is an editorial shortlist, not a ranking or a claim that players agree, and it does not imply that any rights holder has announced a reboot. The case for each is specific: keep the identity, reconsider the execution.
What counts as a reboot?
Here, a reboot means a fresh starting point for a story, a substantial overhaul of the gameplay formula, or both, while retaining enough of a series’ identity for it to remain recognizable. The word is used inconsistently across the industry, so these are practical distinctions rather than official definitions.
- Sequel: continues an existing story or builds on a formula that still works.
- Remaster: preserves the game while upgrading its presentation or technical performance.
- Remake: rebuilds a particular game, often with substantial changes; it may be a visual refresh, but need not be limited to one.
- Reboot: resets the starting point or rethinks the experience more broadly.
A reboot makes the most sense when a series’ recognizable identity is still worth keeping but its pacing, systems, tone, or execution could benefit from a reset. These criteria shape the list below; they are not a universal rule for deciding what a franchise should become.
10 franchises with a case for a reboot
1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
A new starting point could make the role-playing systems and combat easier to read for modern players without losing the series’ central appeal: consequential choices and a close-knit party. Companion management and choice-driven writing should remain central; the opportunity is to make the moment-to-moment play clearer and more approachable.

2. The Legend of Dragoon
The characters and transformation identity are the parts to protect. A reboot could revisit traversal, encounter pacing, interface legibility, and difficulty so that the distinctive fantasy is easier to engage with, rather than simply reproducing the old structure.
3. Bully
The schoolyard setting lends itself to a more reactive sandbox, where exploration and stealth are legible and movement feels smooth. The point would not be to make the world bigger for its own sake, but to give the setting more room to respond to what the player does.

4. F.E.A.R.
A reboot could update gun feel, enemy flanking, and pacing while preserving the series’ horror intensity. Accessibility options would also help more players engage with that tension without requiring the game to soften its identity.
5. Half-Life
This is the most interpretive choice on the list: the case is less about abandoning the existing games than refocusing what a new entry could do. Environmental storytelling and interaction design should lead, with traversal and combat made clearer without displacing the feeling of learning about a place by moving through it.

6. Dead Space
Dead Space is named among the candidates, but the available account of the list does not give a franchise-specific reason for including it. That leaves no grounded basis here for prescribing what a reboot should change or preserve. Its place on this shortlist is therefore a suggestion, not a developed case.
7. Prey
The strongest reason to revisit Prey is to keep its systemic sandbox and imaginative mechanics while improving onboarding and making goals easier to follow. A reboot should help players understand the possibilities without narrowing the choices that make a sandbox rewarding.

8. Syndicate
A fresh take could retain the corporate-war tone while reworking infiltration, stealth, and mission routing. Those systems would give the setting a clearer gameplay identity than a reboot that kept the name but changed the experience beyond recognition.
9. Beyond Good & Evil
The characters, art direction, and sense of discovery are the foundation to preserve. The harder question is how to commit to modern pacing and open-world design without letting a larger world dilute the focused discovery that gives the series its appeal.

These suggestions are editorial directions, not announced plans from developers or rights holders. The source list was published by GeekChamp’s Ratnesh Kumar on May 11, 2026, and the available extract does not establish current development, licensing, or reboot status for any of these franchises. Its Dead Space entry also lacks a supporting rationale. Read the GeekChamp list.
For any proposed reboot, four questions make the pitch more useful than simply asking whether a series needs a new game:
- Continuity: Does the story need a new starting point, or would a sequel serve it better?
- Core activity: What should players spend their time doing, and which familiar activities are essential to the franchise?
- Systems: Is the real opportunity in combat, stealth, traversal, onboarding, pacing, or another part of play?
- Scope: Would the idea work best as a focused authored experience or a broader sandbox?
A sequel can be the better answer when a formula still works; a remaster can be enough when the main need is technical or visual. A reboot earns its name when it makes a deliberate change to the starting point or experience while keeping a recognizable reason for players to care.
