Choose 1080p if your platform, upload connection and encoder can sustain the higher bitrate without dropped frames; choose 720p if bandwidth or encoding capacity is limited. For YouTube, the recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate and codec: H.264 recommendations range from 8 Mbps at 720p to 17 Mbps at 1080p60. A stable 720p stream is usually a better choice than an unstable 1080p stream.
What changes when you stream at 1080p instead of 720p?
1080p carries more spatial detail than 720p, but delivering that detail typically requires more bitrate. Moving from 30 to 60 frames per second can make motion look smoother, while also increasing encoding demands. The result depends on more than resolution: bitrate, frame rate, codec, the amount of motion and detail in the scene, encoder performance and the viewer’s connection all matter.
On YouTube, the encoder bitrate is what you send to the platform. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, so the ingest bitrate is not necessarily the bitrate any particular viewer receives. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance provides platform-specific recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular setting will look good in every stream.
YouTube’s recommended bitrates by resolution, frame rate and codec
The following are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates. YouTube gives separate values for H.264 and AV1/H.265; do not treat them as interchangeable or as universal rules for other platforms.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Output setting | H.264 recommendation | AV1/H.265 recommendation | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps | Lower bandwidth demand; can suit talk-focused or slower-paced streams. |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps | Smoother motion than 30 fps at the same listed YouTube bitrate. |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps | More spatial detail than 720p, with a higher recommended bitrate. |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps | More detail and smoother motion, with greater network and compute demands. |
These are recommendations in YouTube’s encoder settings table, accessed in 2026; they are not measured guarantees of image quality. The same guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. See YouTube’s full settings and testing guidance.
Which setting should you use for a gaming stream?
Choose 1080p30 for detail when 60 fps is not essential
Use 1080p30 if clearer spatial detail is useful and your connection and encoder have enough headroom for the platform’s recommended bitrate. It may be a sensible fit for slower-paced games, strategy games or streams where the camera and overlays matter more than very smooth motion. These are practical content-based suggestions, not YouTube rules.

Choose 1080p60 when both detail and smooth motion matter
Fast gameplay can benefit from 60 fps, but 1080p60 is the most demanding option in YouTube’s listed H.264 settings: 17 Mbps. Pick it only if your upload connection sustains the required bitrate and your system can encode it reliably. Twitch likewise says 1080p requires more bitrate and higher frame rates require more encoding power; its guidance frames the choice around the game, internet speed and computer hardware. Twitch’s broadcast guidance does not establish an exact current bitrate table here.
Choose 720p60 when motion matters more than extra detail
720p60 can be a useful compromise for action games when 1080p’s bitrate or encoding cost is too high. YouTube’s recommended bitrate for 720p60 is the same as for 720p30 in each codec column, though your encoder still has to process more frames per second.

Choose 720p30 when stability and lighter encoding take priority
For commentary, menus, turn-based games or constrained systems, 720p30 can reduce the demands on the connection and encoder. The right choice is the highest setting that stays reliable in a representative test—not the largest number your software lets you select.
How to configure and test your stream
- Check sustained upload capacity. Test upload speed under conditions similar to the planned stream. Compare the result with the configured bitrate and leave room for variation rather than relying on your internet plan’s advertised download speed. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate.
- Select the platform’s resolution and frame rate. For YouTube, Live Control Room can automatically detect resolution and frame rate by default; manual settings are available with a custom stream key. Choose the platform’s recommended settings for the codec you will actually use.
- Set the encoder bitrate and keyframes. For YouTube, use the relevant codec-specific recommendation above as a starting point, set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed 4 seconds. Other platforms can have different requirements.
- Run a representative test stream. Include typical gameplay movement, overlays and audio. A static scene may conceal problems that appear during fast action. YouTube recommends testing with representative content before the event.
- Check stream health while testing. Look for dropped frames, instability or other platform warnings. If they appear, lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate, then test again.
- Use the stable result for the event. Do not raise settings just because a short test looked acceptable; the connection and encoder need to hold up for the expected duration.
How Twitch’s guidance differs from YouTube’s
Do not copy YouTube’s bitrate table into Twitch settings. Twitch’s published guidance emphasizes the trade-off between resolution, bitrate, frame rate, upload speed and computer performance. A Twitch FAQ search result surfaced a guideline to have upload speed around the configured bitrate plus 30%; treat that as Twitch-specific guidance, not a universal rule or a substitute for checking the current page. Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines and its How Do I Stream FAQ are the relevant official pages.

- Dropped frames or unstable delivery: The upload connection may not sustain the configured bitrate. Test again under realistic conditions, reduce the bitrate and, if needed, lower resolution or frame rate.
- Encoding overload: The computer may be unable to encode the selected resolution and frame rate reliably. Reduce the frame rate or resolution and repeat the test; a higher-output setting is not useful if frames are lost.
- 1080p looks worse than expected: Resolution alone does not determine image quality. Confirm the correct codec-specific bitrate, assess whether detailed or fast-moving scenes are straining the available bitrate, and check the encoder and stream-health indicators.
- Viewers report buffering: Your outgoing bitrate is not the only factor; viewers receive platform-transcoded outputs over their own connections. Check stream health and test the stream rather than assuming every viewer gets the ingest quality.
- Settings differ between platforms: Use the destination platform’s current recommendations. YouTube’s figures are for YouTube ingest; Twitch’s guidance is not the same bitrate table.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does streaming at 1080p always look better than 720p?
No. If bitrate, encoding capacity or the viewer’s connection is inadequate, 1080p can look worse or become unstable. Compare tested, reliable streams rather than resolution labels alone.
Does YouTube’s bitrate recommendation describe what viewers receive?
No. It describes the stream sent to YouTube; YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers.
