In Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, the fastest way to get comfortable is to treat your team as a set of tools: switch to the hero with the right element or ready gauge, use Zonai devices to expose enemy weaknesses, and give allies clear orders. Before a tough mission, cook at camp and check your weapons and support missions.
The game is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, released November 6, 2025, with a physical edition listed by Nintendo. These spoiler-light tips focus on combat habits and early preparation that remain useful as the game adds post-story challenges and difficulty options.

Start with these five habits
- Rotate between heroes. Most missions field two to four characters. Use the d-pad to switch to the hero whose element, weapon or special gauge suits the next fight.
- Watch for enemy weaknesses. Check the signal on a large enemy’s health bar and answer with a matching element or Zonai device.
- Keep potential Sync Strike partners close. When two characters’ gauges are full, they can launch a coordinated attack.
- Prepare before a hard mission. Cook at camp, improve weapons and complete useful support missions.
- Use the map and settings. Direct allies to objectives, travel from unlocked control points, and consider enabling Auto-Use for rations and batteries while learning.
The details behind each habit matter: the right timing and target can turn a crowded fight or boss encounter into a much more manageable one.
How should you approach combat?
1. Rotate characters instead of maining one
Switching is more than a way to change perspective. A different hero may have the element needed for an enemy, a special attack ready, or a full gauge that can contribute to a Sync Strike. Missions commonly give you two to four heroes, and a quick d-pad press switches among them. Treat the roster as a toolkit rather than staying with one favorite throughout the battle. TechRadar describes the team structure; Nintendo Life notes the value of switching at the right moments.

2. Learn what your combos are for
The basic pattern of light attacks followed by a strong attack is easy to grasp, but different finishers have different uses. In the training area, try to identify which moves expose a weak point, clear a group, or create space when you are surrounded. That gives you a reason to choose a combo instead of repeating the same attacks regardless of the situation. The move sets, devices and reactions add tactical depth beyond simple attack mashing. TechRadar discusses the combat system and training.
3. Match elemental tools to the enemy
When a powerful enemy appears, read the weakness indicator on its health bar and choose a hero or Zonai device that matches. Nintendo Life gives fire emitters against icy Chuchus and hydrants in volcanic fights as examples. Elemental effects can also chain, and devices are especially useful for reducing a large enemy’s weak-point gauge. A good response is more valuable than using a device simply because it is available. Nintendo Life and TechRadar describe these interactions.
4. Keep Sync Strike partners within reach
Sync Strikes are coordinated attacks available when two characters’ gauges are full. Some character pairs have stronger, distinctive synergies. If a battle is difficult, avoid sending every ally to a separate objective: keeping likely partners together makes it easier to use their shared attack when the gauges fill. Nintendo Life and TechRadar explain the system.

- Hyrule Warriors is an action game based on the Dynasty Warriors gameplay mechanics but set in the Zelda universe.
- This Definitive Edition contains all previous DLCs in a complete package
- Combat large numbers of enemies to take over enemy bases or defeat bosses
- Choose between 29 playable characters including Link, Zelda and even Ganondorf
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch only.
5. Spend your special gauge before it sits unused
The yellow special gauge fills as you attack. It is easy to focus on weak-point openings and Sync Strikes and forget your regular special attack. Use it to thin a dense crowd, interrupt a dangerous elite, or capitalize on a boss opening rather than carrying a full gauge into a cutscene or defeat. Nintendo Life flags this as a common beginner oversight.

6. Slow the action to handle a sudden threat
Hold R to open the item menu and slow the action without fully pausing. That breathing room can help when fast flyers or Octorocks attack: select an appropriate counter, dodge, or device before the threat overwhelms you. Nintendo Life recommends the menu for these ambushes.
7. Dodge and parry instead of relying on repeated attacks
Dodge and parry can slow the action and create chances to counter. Practice their timing against ordinary enemies, then use those habits when elites and bosses punish predictable attacks. When a defensive move gives you an opening, follow it with the element or device that can pressure the enemy’s weak-point gauge. Nintendo Life and TechRadar discuss defensive timing and weak-point combat.

How can you make missions easier to manage?
8. Cook at camp before a difficult battle
Meals can grant benefits such as experience, faster movement or reduced cooldowns. Prepare one at camp before setting out so its boost is active from the opening wave, rather than waiting until a fight is already going badly. Nintendo Life describes cooking as a useful pre-mission advantage.
9. Give allies map orders and use control-point travel
Allies may stand idle or drift away from the objective that needs help. Open the map and direct one or more team members to a location instead of assuming they will handle it. Once a control point is unlocked, a Zonai Balloon can move your active character close to another location, cutting out a long run across the battlefield. Nintendo Life and TechRadar cover map orders and travel.

Nintendo Life recommends enabling Auto-Use for rations and batteries in the settings, particularly on Normal difficulty, to reduce the number of resources you need to manage manually. If you move to a harder mode where timing matters more, turn it off and decide when to spend those resources yourself. Nintendo Life identifies the setting and its trade-off.

11. Upgrade weapons and clear support missions early
Weapons gain levels from collectible enemy parts and can acquire attack traits. Support and tech missions improve characters, the sensor and other useful functions. The sensor can point you toward missions, shops and activities containing materials you are missing, so use it when progress stalls. Loot from enemies and chests is added automatically; keep moving through the fight instead of stopping to collect each drop. Nintendo Life and TechRadar describe upgrades, support tasks and automatic loot collection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which character or loadout is best?
There is no universal best choice established for every mission. Build your team around the demands of the battle rather than a single tier list: consider elemental coverage, weak-point pressure, crowd control, mobility, Sync Strike compatibility, weapon upgrade cost and how forgiving a character feels to use. A setup that handles a boss weakness well may be less useful for a mission built around moving between objectives.
Do save data and amiibo give bonuses?
Save-data weapons
Nintendo says Tears of the Kingdom save data grants a High Guard’s Sword, while Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity save data grants a High Guard’s Claymore. The weapons become available after returning to the Hyrule map once “The Howling Tempests” mission is complete. See Nintendo’s product page and Nintendo’s news and updates for the official details.

Compatible amiibo can provide crafting materials and other items. Nintendo Life reports one scan per day per amiibo, up to five amiibo, and says Zelda figures have generally yielded somewhat more materials without a uniquely essential reward. Treat scanning as an optional convenience, not a requirement for progress. Nintendo and Nintendo Life cover the benefits.
What changed after launch?
Nintendo’s update history records additions across versions 1.0.2 and 1.0.3, so the patched game includes more than its launch content. Version 1.0.2 added the Longsword of Light, High Guard’s Spear, Flux Construct Sync Strikes and post-story battles. Version 1.0.3 added Forbidden difficulty, new challenges, the Forbidden Blade, new Mysterious Construct skills and the Tanagar Meditation Hall. The history also lists bug fixes and training improvements. Check Nintendo’s update information for the official record.
