The Outer Worlds 2 rewards a character built around the way you want to play, but there is no single best beginner build. Choose a broad role, use skills and companions to support it, and take time to understand Arcadia’s conflicts before committing to a side. These spoiler-light tips focus on decisions you can make without assuming every player needs the same setup.
1. Choose a play style before spreading skills around
Start by deciding what you want your Earth Directorate agent to be good at: direct combat, stealth, dialogue, or supporting companions. Obsidian’s published build examples lean into distinct approaches rather than treating every skill as equally important. That makes specialization a useful planning idea—not a prescription to copy someone else’s character.
For example, the developer’s examples include a character focused on Sneak, Speech, and Lockpick, with Gun and Observation also in the mix, as well as a build focused on companion effectiveness. They are examples from Obsidian QA, not a ranking of the best builds. Read Obsidian’s character-build examples.
2. Use build examples as inspiration, not a recipe
Think about what you want your character to do often, then use published builds to see how different skills can support an approach. A stealth-and-dialogue character and a companion-focused character prioritize different things; neither is established as universally stronger. The available examples do not provide a complete skills table, thresholds, or a definitive beginner ranking, so avoid treating them as exact point-by-point plans.
#1 Best Overall
- The Outer Worlds 2 is the eagerly awaited sequel to the award-winning first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment.
- Get ready for an action-packed adventure with a new crew, new weapons, and new enemies in a new colony! So much newness!
- As a daring Earth Directorate, the entire galaxy, rests on your decisions—your strengths, your flaws, your crew, and the factions you choose to trust.
- Build your character with the abilities and choices that reflect your playstyle. The colony reacts to your every move, crafting a narrative that’s yours to own.
- Recruit companions with unique traits, backgrounds, and goals, making them an integral part of the immersive story you create together.
3. Learn what each customization choice represents
Official coverage identifies Traits, Skills, Flaws, Backgrounds, and Perks as parts of character customization. Consider them separate levers for shaping your character: some choices define the character’s broader identity, while skills and perks support capabilities and play style. The published material does not establish a respec rule, so make choices with care rather than assuming you can freely undo them later. Xbox Wire’s launch overview describes the game’s customization and choice-driven story.
4. Weigh a Flaw’s drawback before taking it
A Flaw is not simply a free bonus: the publisher presents it as part of deciding what your character is good at and what they might regret. Before accepting one, ask whether its drawback fits the character you want to role-play and whether you are comfortable living with the trade-off. The official material cited here does not establish that any particular Flaw is a safe pick for beginners.

5. Choose companions to complement your approach
Companions can have individual traits, backgrounds, and goals, and Obsidian’s build examples include a focus on companion effectiveness. Consider how a companion’s strengths might complement your character’s intended role instead of simply duplicating it. The official product description does not supply a universal party lineup, so treat this as a role-playing and team-building consideration, not a fixed requirement. The Steam listing describes the companions and their place in the story.
6. Pay attention to what your companions want
Companions have ambitions of their own. The official description says you can help them pursue those ambitions or steer them toward other objectives, and that your decisions can affect their growth or death. Listen to what a companion wants before making a choice that could shape their path.

7. Hear out the sides in a dispute before choosing one
Arcadia is caught between the Protectorate, a religious order’s rebellion, and a corporate invasion. Rather than assuming a faction is automatically right, listen to what people involved say they want and consider the consequences that matter to your character. The game’s official description emphasizes a reactive story, but the sources cited here do not verify the outcome of specific faction-quest choices. The Steam page introduces Arcadia’s conflict.

The official listing encourages players to navigate varied zones and uncover hidden lore. Take time to explore places that interest you and look for context about the people and conflicts shaping the setting. Exploration can deepen your understanding of Arcadia, but the available description does not promise a particular item or reward in every optional area.

9. Treat dialogue skills as part of your role, not a guaranteed answer
Speech appears alongside combat and stealth skills in Obsidian’s published build examples. If you want a character who tries to talk through situations, plan with that role in mind; if you prefer another approach, build around it. A Speech-focused direction supports a style of play, but it does not guarantee a particular result in every conversation.
10. Set difficulty for the experience you want
Steam lists adjustable difficulty and save-anytime features. Choose a difficulty that suits the challenge you want, and consult the settings on your platform for the controls and labels available there; the cited listings do not establish that the interface or feature availability is identical across platforms. Steam’s feature listing describes the options it lists for that storefront.
11. Check platform and edition details before buying
Access depends on the platform and whether a subscription or particular edition makes sense for you. Steam lists base and Premium editions. Xbox Wire reported that the game launched on Xbox, PC storefronts, and PlayStation 5, and was available at launch through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on October 29, 2025. That is launch-era information, not confirmation of today’s price, edition contents, or subscription catalog status. Check the current storefront for the platform you plan to use before purchasing.
