In 2023, a Chromebook could play games through four routes: browser games, compatible Android apps from Google Play, Steam/Linux on selected hardware, and cloud gaming. The route—and whether a game works at all—depends on the Chromebook’s processor, RAM, storage, touchscreen, ChromeOS version, Play Store and Linux support, administrator policies, and the game’s regional availability. The list below preserves the 2023 recommendations while identifying the installation method and its limitations.
Check your Chromebook before choosing a game
Do not treat “Chromebook” as one hardware category. A 4 GB ARM school device, an Intel Chromebook with a touchscreen, and a newer Chromebook Plus can deliver very different results.
- Android support: Open Settings, choose Apps, and look for Google Play Store. Search for the game in Play Store; an unavailable or incompatible listing means that device should not be treated as supported.
- Steam support: Open the Launcher and search for Steam installer. Google’s supported pathway lists minimum requirements of an Intel Core i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, but compatibility, bugs and performance limitations remain. See Google’s Steam-for-Chromebook documentation.
- Administration: School and workplace administrators can disable Play Store, Linux, gaming sites or external controllers. Ask the administrator rather than bypassing management controls.
- Input: Touch-first Android games are usually more comfortable on a convertible Chromebook in tablet or tent mode. Steam games generally offer better keyboard-and-mouse support.
12 Chromebook games and how to access them
| Game | Genre | Best 2023 route | Cost model | Input and hardware notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roblox | User-created experiences | Android app or browser | Free with optional purchases | Play Store support and school filters vary; performance differs substantially between experiences. |
| Among Us | Multiplayer deduction | Android or Steam | Free/paid edition varies by platform | Online access is required; verify Steam compatibility and choose controls that suit your device. |
| Alto’s Odyssey | Endless runner | Android | Platform and region dependent | Touchscreen is preferable; suitable for casual sessions on compatible devices. |
| NBA Live | Basketball | Verify the exact title; cloud may be an option | Depends on the specific product | “NBA Live” is a series name, not one universally available Chromebook listing. Check the current title, region and service before installing. |
| Minecraft | Sandbox and survival | Android, Linux/Java or cloud, depending on edition | Paid; edition dependent | Bedrock/Android and Java are different products with different requirements and cross-play behavior. |
| PUBG Mobile | Battle royale | Android, where compatible | Free with optional purchases | Play Store compatibility, regional rules, mobile controls and performance must be checked. |
| Fallout Shelter | Base-building simulation | Android or Steam | Free with optional purchases; edition dependent | Generally suited to modest hardware, but Android and Steam controls and content can differ. |
| Stardew Valley | Farming and life simulation | Android or Steam | Paid; edition dependent | A strong long-form single-player choice; the Android version is not automatically identical to PC. |
| Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition | Classic role-playing | Android or Linux/Steam where supported | Paid | Mouse, touchscreen or controller improves the interface; older Android compatibility varies. |
| Asphalt 9: Legends | Racing | Android | Free with optional purchases | Graphics and storage demands are higher than the simplest Android games; hardware matters. |
| Pocket Mortys | Turn-based role-playing | Android | Free with optional purchases | Check Play Store compatibility and publisher support for the particular Chromebook. |
| Injustice 2 | Fighting | Android or cloud, if available | Free with optional purchases or service dependent | Touch controls can feel awkward on a clamshell; compatibility and online-service status can change. |
The original 2023 list is documented by Silicophilic, but availability is not universal. Treat each entry as a title to verify, not a guarantee that every Chromebook can install it.
Choose by access method
Browser games
Browser games require no Play Store or Linux support and use little local storage. They are often the only practical route on an older or managed Chromebook, although school filters, advertising, user-generated content and weak controller support can be issues.

Android games
Android offers the largest straightforward catalog and suits touchscreen convertibles. Phone-oriented interfaces may be awkward with a trackpad and keyboard, and publisher updates can remove Chromebook compatibility. Never make random APK sideloading the default fix.
Steam and Linux games
Steam for Chromebook provides traditional PC games on selected devices, but Google documents title restrictions, bugs and performance limitations. Steam Link is different: it streams a game running on another computer rather than installing it locally. Anti-cheat, DRM, launchers and graphics APIs can also block individual games. Google’s tested examples include Among Us, Celeste, Fallout Shelter, Hollow Knight, Stardew Valley, Vampire Survivors and Portal 2; see the official compatibility and requirements page.
Cloud gaming
Cloud services render the game remotely, so a modest Chromebook can play more demanding titles. They still require a reliable, low-latency connection, and usually a subscription, game ownership or both. Xbox recommends at least 10 Mbps and notes that a compatible controller is required for most games; catalog, plan and regional availability change over time (Xbox Cloud Gaming). NVIDIA supports Chromebook access through the browser (GeForce NOW FAQ). Cloud gaming can be excellent on stable Wi-Fi and unusable on a congested or distant connection; it does not guarantee no lag.

Fix common Chromebook gaming problems
Play Store is missing
The device may lack Android support, be too old, or be administrator-managed. Use browser games, check whether Linux is available, or use permitted cloud gaming; do not attempt to circumvent management.
A game appears but will not install
Device or regional incompatibility, an Android-version requirement, publisher exclusion or insufficient storage may be responsible. Update ChromeOS, free storage, consult the official game support page and use an official alternative edition.
Controls are wrong
Try tablet or tent mode for touch games, pair a Bluetooth or USB controller, and inspect the game’s control settings. Prefer Steam or browser editions when native keyboard support matters.
Rank #3
- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
Performance is poor
- Close unnecessary tabs and apps.
- Lower resolution and graphics quality.
- Update ChromeOS and free storage.
- Keep vents clear and avoid soft surfaces while playing.
- For cloud gaming, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or wired networking where possible.
These are also Google’s recommended first steps for Steam performance issues (Google support).
Cloud gaming has input lag
Move closer to the router, pause downloads and video streams, disable a VPN temporarily, try a wired USB controller and test another network or time of day. Latency to the service’s data center matters as much as headline download speed.

No. Google Stadia was discontinued in January 2023, so it should not appear as a current Chromebook gaming method. A 2023 list can mention Stadia only as a discontinued service, not as an installation or streaming recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can every Chromebook run these 12 games?
No. Processor architecture, RAM, storage, ChromeOS version, Play Store and Linux support, administrator policies and regional listings determine compatibility.
Can Chromebooks run Steam?
Selected Chromebooks can use Google’s Steam-for-Chromebook installer, subject to minimum hardware, supported-device limits, bugs and title restrictions. Steam Link instead streams from another computer.
Can you play Minecraft on a Chromebook?
Often, but the Android/Bedrock and Java/Linux editions are different products. Confirm the edition, hardware requirements and cross-play behavior before buying.

Do I need a controller?
Not always. Touch or keyboard controls work for some games, but cloud gaming and many mobile or fighting games are more comfortable with a compatible controller.
Can Chromebook games work without Wi-Fi?
Some locally installed games support offline play, but browser multiplayer and cloud gaming require internet. Check the individual game’s offline behavior.
Why is a game missing from Google Play?
The developer may exclude Chromebooks, the device or Android version may be unsupported, or the title may be restricted in your region. Do not assume an unofficial APK will solve it.
The Bottom Line
Start with the route your Chromebook supports: browser games for maximum compatibility, Android for a touchscreen-friendly catalog, Steam only on qualifying hardware, and cloud gaming when your connection is reliable. Verify the exact edition and device listing before spending money—“works on Chromebook” is never a guarantee for every model.
