If Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will not open or gets stuck while loading on PC, work through these checks from least disruptive to more diagnostic. The right path depends on whether the launcher fails, the game process crashes, or loading stops after the game opens; no single fix is established for every PC. Activision’s reviewed MWIII support material lists system requirements, but does not confirm a canonical 12-step repair sequence.
Before you start: identify where launch fails
Before changing settings, note whether you use Steam or Battle.net, what the exact error says, and the last point the game reaches: no window, a crash at the splash screen, or a stall during loading. Also note whether the problem began after a game or driver update and whether other games launch. These details help separate a launcher or account problem from a game-file, system, or software conflict.
Try these 12 checks in order
1. Restart the PC and launcher
Close the launcher, restart Windows, then reopen the launcher and allow any pending launcher update to finish before trying MWIII once. This is a basic diagnostic check, not a fix Activision specifically confirms for MWIII.
2. Compare your PC with MWIII’s requirements
Activision’s requirements page, dated January 17, 2024, lists launch-era desktop specifications and says they may be updated. The minimum listed configuration is Windows 10 64-bit with the latest update, DirectX 12 compatibility, 8 GB RAM, an Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400, and a GTX 960/GTX 1650 or Radeon RX 470 with 2 GB VRAM. The recommended configuration for 60 FPS in most situations at high settings is 16 GB RAM, an Intel Core i7-6700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X, and a GTX 1080 Ti/RTX 3060, RX 6600 XT, or Intel Arc A770 with 8 GB VRAM. Activision also lists broadband as a requirement. Check the current MWIII PC requirements rather than assuming these dated figures remain unchanged.

3. Check SSD space and update headroom
Activision’s launch-era listing specifies an SSD and 149 GB for MWIII, 79 GB for Multiplayer alone, or 34 GB when COD HQ is already installed; it warns that mandatory updates may need additional space. Steam’s MWIII Campaign technical listing gives a different launch-era figure of 102 GB. Those figures describe different platform or content contexts, not a dependable current install-size estimate for every setup. Check the current size and update needs shown by your launcher and leave extra free space on the SSD where the game is installed. Activision requirements · Steam MWIII Campaign support listing
4. Check the game files in its launcher
Use the integrity-check option offered by the storefront where MWIII is installed: Steam’s current equivalent of “Verify integrity of game files,” or Battle.net’s “Scan and Repair” if available. Activision describes these paths in a troubleshooting article for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), not specifically for MWIII; treat them as standard launcher checks, not guaranteed MWIII cures. 5. Let shader loading finish
If the game displays shader preloading or compilation, let it complete before changing menus or repeatedly retrying a mode. Activision’s guidance to wait for shader preloading is also in its 2019 Modern Warfare troubleshooting article, so it is a cautious check rather than MWIII-specific confirmation. Do not rely on hardware-specific preload time estimates from that older guide as a prediction for MWIII.
6. Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates, then check the current driver for your GPU directly with NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Activision’s MWIII page recommends keeping Windows and drivers current, but its listed GPU versions—NVIDIA 560.70, AMD 23.10.2, and Intel 31.0.101.4972—are recommendations on a page dated January 17, 2024, not current October 2026 guidance. 7. Test for a background-app conflict
Temporarily close overlays, recording software, controller remappers, performance monitors, overclocking utilities, and other nonessential background applications. Test one change at a time so you can identify a possible conflict, then restore the apps you closed. Activision recommends checking for interfering applications in guidance for the 2019 Modern Warfare; this is not proof that any particular app conflicts with MWIII.
8. Review security software’s quarantine or history
Check whether antivirus or other security software blocked or quarantined a game file around the time the failure began. Do not turn off protection globally. Only consider a narrowly scoped game-folder exception if you trust the installation, have confirmed a specific block, and know how to remove the exception afterward. Activision’s exception advice applies to its older Modern Warfare troubleshooting guide, not a confirmed MWIII issue.

9. Use a Windows clean boot if simpler checks fail
A clean boot starts Windows with a reduced set of services and startup apps, which can help isolate a software conflict. Follow Microsoft’s current clean-boot directions, test the game, and then re-enable services and startup items systematically. Activision’s clean-boot suggestion is in its guide for the 2019 Modern Warfare, so use this as a later diagnostic step, not as a proven MWIII remedy.
10. If you use Razer Synapse, update it and test with it closed
Install any available Synapse update, close the app temporarily, and try MWIII again. Activision mentions updating Razer Synapse in its older Modern Warfare troubleshooting guide; that does not establish a known MWIII conflict. Reopen Synapse after the test.

11. Separate an account or launcher issue from a game crash
Confirm MWIII is installed under the launcher account you expect, and record whether the launcher reports an error or the game process opens and then exits. Steam’s Call of Duty storefront says an Activision account is required, but that requirement alone does not show that linking or changing accounts will resolve a launch failure. Capture the exact error text rather than guessing at an account fix. Call of Duty on Steam
12. Escalate with useful diagnostics
If the checks do not resolve the issue, contact Activision support for MWIII or the platform’s support team. Include your launcher, Windows version, CPU and GPU, the exact error, when the crash occurs, and the checks you tried. Avoid registry edits, arbitrary folder deletion, command-line flags, disabling security protections, or reinstalling Windows without reliable, title-specific instructions.

| What you see | Start with | What it helps distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| No game window or process | Launcher restart, requirements, storage, and file integrity | Launcher state, system fit, free space, or damaged installation files |
| Crash at splash or shortly after opening | Windows and GPU updates, then a one-at-a-time background-app test | Outdated components or a software conflict |
| Game opens but loading stalls | Allow shader loading to finish; check available SSD space and any displayed error | Loading activity, storage pressure, or a specific reported failure |
| Launcher reports an account or install error | Confirm the correct launcher account and capture the message | Platform/account state rather than a game-process crash |
