Which cooling pad should you buy?
For the strongest gaming-load cooling
Start with the IETS GT500 if your laptop’s intake grilles fit inside its foam seal and you can tolerate a loud, bulky cooler. The IETS GT600 is a candidate for more aggressive cooling and larger systems, but check the exact revision, dimensions, and compatibility before choosing it. Neither should be treated as a guaranteed fix for throttling.
For premium controls or an existing ecosystem
Choose the Llano V12 Ultra if its sealed design and software-controlled features suit your setup; consider the Razer Laptop Cooling Pad if Synapse integration and automatic control matter more than value. Software features are only useful if you want another vendor utility running and the exact revision supports your operating system.

For 18–19-inch laptops and quieter desk use
The Thermaltake Massive 20 RGB is the most clearly documented large-format option in this shortlist: Thermaltake specifies laptops up to 19 inches, a 200 mm fan, three height settings, and the listed operating figures in the table. Its broad platform and low-RPM design suit quieter general desk use better than a high-speed turbofan, but it is large and less forceful. Llano V13 is another possibility for oversized laptops, with physical fit requiring extra verification.
For a quieter or simpler setup
Consider KLIM Ultimate or a conventional large-fan model such as the Massive 20 RGB. Large, slower fans tend to make more sense for meetings, streaming, or shared rooms than a turbofan run at full speed. Noise ratings from different brands are not directly comparable because measurement distance and conditions can differ.

For a tight budget or portability
The Kootek Chill Mat 5 offers multiple fans and controls at a budget price point; the Havit HV-F2056 is the slimmer stand-style choice. Treat both as elevation and basic airflow solutions, not substitutes for sealed pressure models on a high-wattage laptop that is persistently throttling.
For RGB or a newer Thermaltake feature set
RGB is an aesthetic feature, not a cooling advantage. The Massive 20 RGB is the simpler, large-fan choice; Massive EXTREME adds a sealed chamber, powered operation, display, and hub according to Thermaltake’s catalog and manual. Its extra power and footprint make it less suitable for someone seeking a simple USB-only pad.

How to tell whether a cooling pad will help your laptop
Elevation, airflow, and pressure do different jobs
A stand can help by lifting the laptop and opening space beneath its intake. A fan mat adds airflow across the base, but its benefit depends on whether the fan sits under the vents. Static pressure matters when the laptop has restrictive intake openings: pushing air through those openings is different from merely moving air around beneath the chassis. Sealed coolers use foam or a pressure chamber to direct air toward an intake area, which can make them more effective in a compatible configuration.
There is no reliable universal temperature reduction. Secondary comparisons report outcomes ranging from modest changes to roughly 15–20°C or more in favorable setups, but laptop model, ambient temperature, workload, fan curve, power mode, and measurement method all affect the result. Those figures should not be read as a promise for your machine. Current comparison coverage discusses the variation.

Match the pad to the underside, not just the screen size
- Look underneath the laptop and locate its intake grilles. Note whether they are central, on the left or right, or spread across much of the base.
- Compare those locations with the pad’s fan or pressure chamber. A multi-fan pad is not automatically better if its fans miss the intakes.
- For a sealed model, make sure the foam surrounds the intake area without covering vents, speakers, or downward-facing ports.
- Leave room for rear exhaust. Do not position the laptop so hot exhaust air is drawn back into the base.
- Check platform width and depth as well as the advertised screen-size range. Screen inches alone do not establish that the laptop will sit safely on the pad.
Use size as a screening check
- 13–14 inches: Check that a large fan or foam seal does not sit awkwardly beyond the chassis, and that the laptop remains secure on the supports.
- 15–16 inches: This is the broadest compatibility range for conventional and sealed pads, but vent alignment still matters.
- 17–17.3 inches: Measure the actual base. A “17-inch” label does not guarantee adequate depth or support.
- 18 inches: Many ordinary mats become marginal; favor a large platform and confirm its dimensions.
- 19 inches: Thermaltake lists the Massive 20 RGB for laptops up to 19 inches, but the footprint still needs to fit its supporting surface. Manufacturer specifications
Sealed turbofan or conventional fan mat?
| Type | Strengths | Trade-offs | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sealed turbofan cooler | Higher static pressure; directs air toward intake grilles; often includes a dust filter. | Can be loud, bulky, and heavy. Foam may not seal properly or may obstruct vents, ports, speakers, or exhaust if the fit is wrong. | High-load gaming laptops with compatible bottom intakes, when the user accepts noise and desk-bound use. |
| Conventional open-air stand or fan mat | Usually simpler and less expensive; often quieter and easier to store; elevation may improve the intake path. | Weaker pressure and more dependence on fan-to-vent alignment; improvements under gaming load may be modest. | General desk use, quieter rooms, portable setups, or laptops that mainly need more clearance beneath the base. |
Fan count alone is not a performance measure: five small fans do not automatically outperform one large fan or a high-pressure blower. Choose based on airflow path, pressure, fit, and acceptable noise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Noise, dust, power, and desk ergonomics
Noise is part of the cooling result
A high-pressure pad may cool more effectively at a speed that is too loud for calls, shared rooms, or libraries. A lower setting that you can tolerate may be the better everyday choice, even if it delivers less airflow. Headphones can make a loud cooler easier to live with during gaming, but not during meetings. Treat Thermaltake’s 30 dBA figure for the Massive 20 RGB as a manufacturer specification, not a directly comparable independent measurement; the manufacturer does not establish standardized conditions against other brands. Keep filters and intakes clean
A removable filter on a sealed cooler can catch dust before it reaches the laptop, but a dirty filter also restricts airflow. Clean the pad filter and laptop intake grilles regularly; a pad does not remove the need for internal maintenance. Avoid carpet, bedding, and other surfaces that block the cooler’s own intake.
Check USB power and connections
Basic mats commonly draw power from a laptop USB port, but passthrough ports may not deliver the same current or data capability as a powered hub. RGB or high-performance models may need more current or an additional connection. Thermaltake says the Massive 20 RGB lighting needs at least 1.2 A and may require its extra USB plug when a laptop port supplies less. Verify that a USB-C dock can provide the required current. Do not assume any pad charges a laptop unless its specifications explicitly support USB Power Delivery. Massive 20 RGB manual
Check the angle, lip, and stability
Height settings, retaining lips, rubber feet, weight, and hinge strength affect daily use. An angled cooler can help desk posture, but it may make the keyboard uncomfortable or raise the screen too high. Check whether a front lip interferes with the chassis, and whether the pad blocks speakers, vents, or access you need. Thermaltake lists three height settings—3°, 9°, and 13°—and a weight of approximately 1.52 kg for the Massive 20 RGB. Manufacturer specifications
When a cooling pad is the wrong fix
If temperatures have recently risen, fans run unusually loudly at idle, vents look clogged, or throttling continues despite low fan speed, investigate the laptop before buying an accessory. A pad cannot repair a failed fan or heat pipe, clear an obstructed heatsink, or replace degraded thermal interface material. A poor fan or gasket fit may also add little useful airflow or obstruct the laptop’s own vents.
- Clean the laptop’s intake grilles and cooling system as appropriate for your model.
- Use a simple stand or raise the rear if the main problem is blocked clearance.
- Check firmware, graphics drivers, performance mode, and fan-curve settings.
- Consider limiting CPU boost or GPU power, and cap frame rates if lower heat is more important than maximum performance.
- Improve room airflow or use an external monitor with a desk stand for a desktop-style setup.
How to judge cooling-pad claims
The evidence available for these products is uneven: first-party documentation is useful for dimensions, controls, power, and stated compatibility, while comparison articles and owner reports can help identify product categories and reported experience. Those sources do not make every temperature or noise claim directly comparable. The cited 2026 coverage includes different products and models, while the Thermaltake pages provide specific manufacturer specifications. No uniform test of all 15 products is established here, so the recommendations are organized by use case rather than presented as measured thermal winners.
Quick Recap
- Strongest evidence: repeatable independent temperature and noise measurements using stated workloads and conditions.
- Useful product facts: official dimensions, controls, compatibility statements, power requirements, and manuals.
- More limited evidence: owner reports with a named laptop and repeatable before-and-after conditions.
- Weak evidence: unqualified “up to” temperature claims, retailer bullets, ratings, or articles repeating specifications without test conditions.
