The best keyboard for a Steam Deck depends on where you use it: Bluetooth keeps handheld and couch setups simple, while wired USB or a 2.4GHz receiver makes more sense for a docked gaming station. For most owners, a compact 65% or 75% board is a better fit than a full-size model. Bluetooth, 2.4GHz wireless, or USB?
- Bluetooth: The simplest choice for handheld, couch, and travel use because it pairs directly with the Deck and avoids a receiver. It is usually adequate for chat, browsing, turn-based games, strategy titles, and casual play. Reconnection after sleep and power-saving behavior vary by keyboard, so check those before relying on it for a permanent setup.
- 2.4GHz wireless: A bundled receiver can be a good fit for gaming at a desk, but it is not automatically better for every Deck owner. Many receivers use USB-A, so you may need a data-capable USB-C adapter, hub, or dock. A receiver also occupies the Deck’s only USB-C port if connected directly, competing with charging or display output. Latency claims depend on the product and test conditions; do not treat a wireless polling-rate figure alone as proof of a better real-world experience.
- Wired USB: Straightforward for a docked setup and often convenient for Desktop Mode. A USB-C keyboard can connect directly; a USB-A keyboard needs a suitable adapter or dock. A cable is awkward for handheld play, and using the Deck’s single USB-C port for a keyboard can prevent charging or video output unless you add a hub or dock.
Valve says the Deck’s USB-C port supports peripherals and describes Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support in its hardware overview. The listed external connection is USB 3.2 Gen 2 with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode. OLED and original LCD specifications list Bluetooth 5.3 and 5.0 respectively; neither version number guarantees a particular keyboard’s reconnection behavior.

Pick a layout that fits your games
- 60%: Smallest and easiest to pack, but function-row and navigation keys are accessed through layers. Good for common movement and combat keys; less convenient for MMOs, strategy games, coding, or extensive desktop use.
- 65%: A useful portability compromise. Dedicated arrow keys make navigation and some games easier without taking up much space.
- 75%: Often the strongest all-round layout for a Deck desk. It keeps a function row and more navigation keys while remaining smaller than a full-size board.
- Tenkeyless: A conventional, number-pad-free layout for docked gaming, with dedicated function and navigation rows. It is less convenient to carry or use on a couch.
- Full-size: Choose it deliberately if you want a number pad and have a stable desk. It is usually more keyboard than a handheld setup needs.
Low-profile switches can make a board feel less tall, but do not necessarily make it portable. For example, Logitech lists the G915 at 18.70 inches wide and about 1,025 g; its full-size footprint matters more than its low-profile switches if you plan to travel with it (Logitech specifications).
Separate basic compatibility from extra features
A keyboard can type through standard USB or Bluetooth input even if its configuration application does not run on SteamOS. Before paying extra for a gaming model, ask what happens to the features you actually want:
- Does the lighting use an acceptable onboard default, and can hardware controls change it?
- Are macros or remapped keys stored in onboard memory, or do they need a desktop app running?
- Do adjustable actuation, rapid-trigger settings, profiles, OLED controls, and wireless settings require Windows or macOS software?
- Can firmware updates or configuration be handled through a supported web tool or Linux-compatible utility?
- Will settings persist when you move the board between computers?
Do not assume that a Windows configuration utility runs natively in SteamOS. If the board’s key gaming advantage depends on software you cannot conveniently use, treat it as a standard keyboard on the Deck unless the manufacturer documents otherwise.

External keyboard input can be useful for text entry, shortcuts, chat, and games with native keyboard controls, but it does not make every game behave like a desktop PC game. A title may not accept keyboard input for gameplay, may require a mouse too, or may keep showing controller prompts after a keyboard is connected. Prompt switching and text-entry behavior belong to the game’s implementation. Valve’s Steamworks keyboard guidance discusses developer APIs for on-screen text input; it is not a guarantee that every game exposes full external-keyboard controls.
For FPS games and many Desktop Mode tasks, plan on adding a mouse or trackball. A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse avoid cables; a hub or dock makes wired peripherals, charging, and a monitor easier to manage.

SteamOS menu wording can change between releases, but the general Bluetooth and USB process is straightforward.
- Turn on the keyboard and put it into Bluetooth pairing mode if using Bluetooth.
- On the Deck, open Settings and find Bluetooth; enable it if necessary.
- Select the keyboard in the available-device list and complete any PIN or confirmation prompt.
- Open a text field in Desktop Mode and test letters, numbers, modifiers, arrows, function keys, and any media controls you need.
- Test in Game Mode and in a game that natively supports keyboard input. Try an in-game chat field or search field as well.
- For a 2.4GHz receiver or USB keyboard, connect through the Deck’s USB-C port using the correct data-capable adapter, or attach it to a hub or dock.
- Test reconnection after sleep and reboot, and after changing between Desktop Mode and Game Mode.
If the keyboard does not connect or respond
- Make sure it is not still connected to another computer, tablet, or phone.
- Remove the Bluetooth pairing and pair again; confirm the keyboard is actually in pairing mode.
- Charge the keyboard, check its physical connection-mode switch, and test wired USB if available.
- For a receiver, try another dock or hub port, or a different data-capable USB-C adapter.
- Check manufacturer guidance for firmware updates or required configuration. Do not install an unsupported utility just to make ordinary typing work.
- If it types in Desktop Mode but not in a game, check that the game supports keyboard input; a keyboard cannot add controls that the game does not implement.
Which one should you buy?
- For portable gaming: Start with the ASUS ROG Falchion RX Low Profile or NuPhy Air75 V3 if you want a larger layout; consider the Air60 HE only if you are comfortable with 60% layers.

Whatever you choose, judge it by the setup you will actually use: receiver or cable practicality, layout, comfort, reconnection, and the features available without a Windows-only app. The most expensive gaming keyboard is not automatically the best Steam Deck keyboard.
