For a PC playthrough of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition or Anniversary Edition, these 15 mods cover useful fixes, better menus, character customization, combat, followers, and new quests. They are a curated mix—not a universal ranking—and they are not all compatible with every game runtime or each other. Check each mod’s current page before installing, especially after a Skyrim update.
This is a PC-focused Nexus-style shortlist, not a guide to console Creations. Mods that use SKSE or other plugins need extra setup; the framework recommendations below are optional unless another mod you choose depends on them.
15 Skyrim mods to consider for a PC playthrough
The table groups the picks by what they change. “Check requirements” means the exact supported runtime and dependencies should be confirmed on the mod’s current page; do not assume a Special Edition file works with every Anniversary Edition installation.
| Mod | What it changes and who may want it | Compatibility note |
|---|---|---|
Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (USSEP) |
A broad community bug-fix package for players who want a more corrected baseline. | PC Skyrim Special Edition focus; check the current listing for runtime support and any required content. It can overlap with other mods that edit the same records. |
SkyUI |
A PC-oriented interface overhaul with sorting and a mod configuration menu. A useful pick if you find the default menus cumbersome or want to configure supported mods in-game. | Check current requirements and runtime compatibility before installing; it is not a console-menu replacement. |
Better MessageBox Controls |
Improves how message-box menu areas respond to clicks and keyboard input, a small quality-of-life change for frequent menu users. | Check the current listing for supported game version and any dependencies. |
RaceMenu |
Expands character creation with additional slider displays and color and sculpt options, making it a strong choice for players who spend time shaping a character’s appearance. | The Nexus listing says RaceMenu requires SKSE. Match SKSE to the exact Skyrim runtime you have installed. |
A Quality World Map |
Provides a more detailed world map, with alternate map styles for players who want a different look while navigating. | The PC Gamer guide notes a limitation when using the 3D map option. Check its current listing and avoid assuming every map-related mod will work together. |
Relationship Dialogue Overhaul |
Adds voiced dialogue for NPC relationships and followers, giving players who care about companions and social interactions more to hear. | Check current requirements and conflicts with other dialogue or NPC edits. |
Shirley |
Adds a follower based on Shirley Curry, voiced by Curry herself. Consider it if you want a companion-focused addition rather than a broad gameplay overhaul. | Confirm the current listing’s supported edition and any requirements before adding it. |
Alternate Start – Live Another Life |
Lets role-players begin outside Skyrim’s standard opening, which is especially useful for repeat playthroughs built around a specific character concept. | Confirm edition, dependencies, and current page status; alternate-start mods can conflict with changes to the opening sequence. |
Precision |
Changes melee collision and impact feedback for players looking for more responsive close-quarters combat. | Review and tune its options, particularly weapon range, as PC Gamer advises. Check for overlap with other combat or animation changes. |
Clockwork |
A substantial atmospheric quest addition built around a haunted mine and Dwemer setting. Choose it if you want a longer, story-led excursion rather than a small convenience tweak. | Check the current listing for supported runtime and requirements before beginning a save around a large quest mod. |
Fortune’s Tradehouse |
Adds a merchant hub in Markarth, with voiced characters and smaller stories. It suits players looking for a grounded, town-focused addition. | Check current requirements and possible conflicts with other Markarth or city edits. |
The Forgotten City |
A mystery and exploration quest with a standalone feel, for players who want a self-contained story alongside Skyrim’s main world. | Check the live listing for edition support and dependencies before installation. |
Legacy of the Dragonborn |
A large museum, collection, item-display, and quest expansion. It is a natural fit for completionists who want collecting and displaying discoveries to become a central playthrough goal. | Its scope makes it important to read the current installation instructions and compatibility guidance before building a load order around it. The Nexus top-mod catalog listed an update on 24 June 2026. |
Address Library for SKSE Plugins |
Infrastructure for SKSE plugins: its purpose is to support version-independent DLL plugins, not to add a visible quest or gameplay feature by itself. | Install it when a chosen plugin requires it, and check that plugin’s current requirements and supported runtime. |
SSE Engine Fixes |
An engine-fix plugin for players assembling a larger PC mod list and seeking to address engine issues. | It has installation notes and dependencies. Read the current instructions carefully and verify compatibility with your exact game runtime before installing. |
Choose by the kind of playthrough you want
- For a smoother baseline: start by considering USSEP and the interface improvements that solve problems you actually notice. A bug-fix package is not a requirement for every player, and it can still interact with other record edits.
- For character and role-play focus: consider RaceMenu, Shirley, Relationship Dialogue Overhaul, or Alternate Start. These serve different goals: shaping a character, adding a companion, expanding relationship dialogue, or changing the opening.
- For a more substantial story: Clockwork, The Forgotten City, Fortune’s Tradehouse, and Legacy of the Dragonborn offer different scales and styles. Pick based on whether you want a longer quest, a mystery, a local hub, or a collection-centered expansion.
- For combat or navigation: Precision changes melee feel, while A Quality World Map changes the map. Tune Precision rather than assuming its default settings suit every weapon setup.
What to know about SKSE and game-version matching
SKSE is a script extender used by some PC mods. RaceMenu’s Nexus listing specifically requires it; Address Library and SSE Engine Fixes are also framework or engine-level picks rather than standalone content. Dependencies are worth installing when a mod you want calls for them, but they are not a mandatory starter pack for every player.

SKSE builds are tied to Skyrim’s executable version, not just the game’s edition name. The SKSE compatibility listings recorded on 14 August 2026 included Anniversary Edition build 2.3.1 for game version 1.7.104, GOG Anniversary Edition build 2.2.6 for 1.6.1179, Special Edition build 2.0.20 for 1.5.97, and VR build 2.0.12 for 1.4.15. The SKSE page also carried a warning about an announced Skyrim update. These are dated listings, not a promise of current compatibility: check the official SKSE page and the mod’s requirements at installation time, and install the build that matches your actual runtime.
How to install without making a fragile load order
- Identify your game runtime and platform. Confirm whether you have PC Special Edition or Anniversary Edition and record the executable version. This shortlist is not a blanket recommendation for console, VR, or every storefront build.
- Read each mod’s current page. Check dependencies, installation instructions, supported runtime, and compatibility notes. Recheck after a game update: Bethesda warns that recently updated games can temporarily leave Creations or mods working incorrectly until their authors update them.
- Install in small batches and keep a recoverable save. Add a few related mods at a time, launch the game, and check the affected feature before adding more. Avoid changing a large set of plugins midway through a playthrough without understanding the mod authors’ save-game guidance.
- Use a mod manager if your list is growing. PC Gamer identifies Vortex and Mod Organizer 2 as management options. Vortex offers a simpler setup, while MO2 keeps mods in a separate directory. Follow the chosen manager’s current instructions rather than mixing manual and manager-managed installs casually.
- Inspect conflicts instead of trusting automatic sorting alone. Mods can edit the same records, and load order determines which edits win. Nexus’s compatibility guide recommends reading mod instructions and describes xEdit conflict filters for examining a full load order; automatic sorting cannot resolve every intentional or unintended conflict.
- Test and isolate problems. If a new mod is followed by a black screen, crash, or UI error, Bethesda recommends troubleshooting by removing the suspect Creation or mod and testing again. Reintroduce changes methodically rather than disabling many plugins at once.
Why this is not a console Creations list
Bethesda’s in-game Creations instructions apply to Skyrim Special Edition: users can download Creations and set their load order in the Creations menu. Bethesda also warns that Creations can cause issues and that achievements are disabled unless otherwise specified. The recommendations above include PC-specific frameworks such as SKSE, so do not assume they can be installed through the console menu. For console play, choose mods explicitly offered for your platform through its supported Creations interface and follow Bethesda’s instructions.
