Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMicro-stutter is usually an uneven-frame-time problem, not simply “too few FPS.” A game can average 120 FPS while occasionally taking 40, 80, or 150 milliseconds to present one frame, producing a visible hitch. NVIDIA’s frame-pacing analysis identifies uneven frame duration, shader compilation, resource streaming and pipeline work as common causes (NVIDIA technical analysis).
Work through the tests below in order, changing one variable at a time. Record your result in a repeatable scene; do not assume a registry tweak or a new driver is automatically an improvement. The original “2024” label is outdated, so this guide reflects Windows 11 24H2/25H2-era behavior and current shader-delivery features.
First, identify what is actually stuttering
Low FPS is consistently slow rendering. Micro-stutter is an occasional long frame among normal frames. A frame-time graph exposes this far better than an average-FPS counter.
| Symptom | Likely category | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Worst on first launch or after a driver update | Shader compilation/cache | Keep the cache enabled and let the game rebuild |
| Hitch entering a new area | Asset streaming, VRAM, storage, CPU main thread | Watch disk, VRAM and per-core CPU graphs |
| Only above a particular FPS | GPU saturation or VRR ceiling | Apply a cap below the monitor limit |
| Only in borderless mode | Presentation path, overlays, MPO | Compare exclusive fullscreen and optimized borderless |
| Only with a second monitor | MPO, refresh mismatch, video acceleration | Test with the second display disconnected, then MPO |
| Only while moving the mouse | Polling, USB, input or CPU spike | Try 1,000 Hz and another USB port |
| Across several games | System, driver, thermals or background software | Check driver, clocks, temperatures and processes |
| One game only | Game patch or engine behavior | Compare APIs and check developer reports |
Collect evidence before changing settings
- Log a frame-time graph, GPU utilization and clock, VRAM, CPU use per core, system RAM, disk activity, temperatures and power limits.
- Note the game API (DirectX 11, DirectX 12 or Vulkan), Windows build, hardware, refresh rate, VRR support, display mode and whether streaming or recording is active.
- Repeat the same route or benchmark with uncapped FPS, the in-game limiter and an external limiter.
- Use
dxdiagfor DirectX and driver information, perfmon /relfor reliability events, andpowercfg /requestsfor active power-management requests.
A stable FPS number does not prove stable presentation. Network synchronization, input polling and display tearing can feel like rendering stutter while the game’s frame times remain normal.

15 fixes, in the order worth testing
1. Update or roll back the graphics driver
Ask when the problem began. If it started immediately after an update, test the previous known-good driver. If the driver is old or several games are affected, install the current stable package from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel. Use a clean installation only when a normal installation leaves corruption or conflicting components.
Targeted hotfixes can be legitimate: NVIDIA documented a June 2026 hotfix for a frame-pacing issue affecting certain monitors with G-SYNC (hotfix details). Install such a release only when its affected hardware and symptom match yours; hotfixes are not universal upgrades.
2. Keep shader caches enabled
Shader compilation can hitch when a material, effect or rendering path is first encountered. NVIDIA lists compilation as a common stutter source, and AMD documents Shader Cache as a way to reuse compiled shaders and reduce repeated CPU work (NVIDIA settings documentation; AMD documentation).
- Leave NVIDIA shader caching at its vendor-optimized setting and AMD Radeon Shader Cache at “AMD optimized,” unless you are testing corruption.
- After a driver update, launch the game and spend time in the areas that stutter before judging it.
- Deleting a cache is a recovery step, not routine maintenance: it guarantees recompilation and can make the next runs worse temporarily.
NVIDIA’s current app also offers beta Auto Shader Compilation, which can rebuild DirectX 12 shaders while the PC is idle. NVIDIA says it is off by default and exposed in the app’s Graphics tab under global Shader Cache controls (NVIDIA announcement).

3. Use precompiled shader delivery where supported
Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery can distribute precompiled shader data for supported Xbox PC app games and compatible AMD hardware. It is intended to reduce first-launch or first-use compilation, and support expanded to additional AMD devices in 2026 (Microsoft developer information).
Availability depends on the game, store, driver, GPU and hardware. It does not remove traversal stutter, CPU simulation stalls, streaming delays or poor engine frame pacing.
4. Cap the frame rate
A cap gives the GPU headroom for workload spikes and can keep a VRR display inside its operating range. Try the game’s own limiter first. If it is missing or visibly erratic, test an external limiter such as RTSS; in-game limiters can have lower latency, while RTSS may deliver steadier pacing when the built-in limiter is poor (Blur Busters limiter discussion).
For VRR, begin about 3 FPS below the monitor’s maximum refresh rate:

| Maximum refresh | Starting cap |
|---|---|
| 60 Hz | 57 FPS |
| 100 Hz | 97 FPS |
| 120 Hz | 117 FPS |
| 144 Hz | 141 FPS |
| 165 Hz | 162 FPS |
| 240 Hz | 237 FPS |
This is a starting point, not a law. Use a lower cap if the GPU cannot sustain the ceiling, the engine behaves poorly near it, or competitive latency is more important than consistency (Blur Busters G-SYNC guidance).
5. Configure G-SYNC, FreeSync or other VRR
- Enable VRR in the monitor’s on-screen menu and in the GPU software.
- Test fullscreen and borderless separately.
- Start with the below-ceiling cap above and verify that the game’s limiter is reliable.
- Keep game and driver V-Sync choices deliberate. A commonly tested G-SYNC setup is driver V-Sync on, in-game V-Sync off, and a cap below maximum refresh, but monitor, laptop and multi-display results vary.
AMD menu names and available controls vary by Adrenalin version and GPU (AMD support).
6. Compare exclusive fullscreen and borderless
Run the same scene in each mode. If only one stutters, use the smoother one while investigating overlays and presentation settings. Borderless can follow a different Windows compositor path; exclusive fullscreen is not automatically superior.
7. Test Windows 11 Optimizations for windowed games
Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says this feature changes compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 windowed or borderless games to a newer flip-model path and can enable VRR and Auto HDR. Restart the game after changing it. Use the per-app control when only one title is affected (Microsoft instructions).

8. Test HAGS and related Windows features individually
Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling, Game Mode, Auto HDR, overlays and windowed optimizations can interact differently with each GPU, driver, frame-generation mode and monitor arrangement. Record the original setting, change only one option, reboot when requested, repeat the route and restore it if there is no improvement. There is no universal “disable HAGS” rule.
9. Test MPO only for compositor symptoms
Multi-Plane Overlay lets the GPU compose layers independently. Consider it when stutter or flicker appears with a second monitor, video playback, browser windows, black screens or a recent Windows/driver change. NVIDIA provides official mpo_disable.reg and mpo_restore.reg files (NVIDIA MPO procedure).
- Create a restore point or export the relevant registry state.
- Apply NVIDIA’s disable file and restart Windows.
- Repeat the identical game and monitor test.
- Apply the restore file if there is no benefit.
Do not copy random registry values from forums. Disabling MPO can affect desktop composition, HDR, video playback and power behavior.
10. Leave GPU headroom
If utilization sits at 99–100%, small workload changes can become long frames. Apply a cap, then reduce ray tracing or path tracing, volumetrics, shadows, reflections and view distance. Use moderate upscaling if available. Lower textures only when VRAM is near capacity; textures often change memory pressure more than shader workload.

11. Find CPU and background-process spikes
Inspect per-core load, not just total CPU percentage. Check browsers, launchers, antivirus scans, RGB utilities, hardware monitors, cloud sync and recording tools. Look for thermal throttling, power limits or one game thread pinned while other cores are idle.
12. A/B test overlays and recording
Temporarily disable Xbox Game Bar recording, Discord, Steam, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, and capture software. Close the streaming application and, for diagnosis only, try a browser without hardware acceleration. If the hitch disappears, re-enable features one at a time rather than permanently disabling everything.
13. Check VRAM, RAM, storage and game files
- Watch VRAM and system RAM at the hitch; paging or VRAM exhaustion can trigger streaming stalls.
- Check disk activity, free space and drive temperature. Test another drive if activity spikes or the drive is unhealthy.
- Verify game files through the launcher.
- An SSD can reduce loading or asset-streaming delays, but it cannot fix shader compilation, a CPU simulation stall or bad frame pacing.
14. Check thermals, power and input polling
Test at stock clocks and, on a laptop, plugged into AC with an appropriate performance profile. Thermal limits, battery transitions, GPU power limits and unstable overclocks can produce periodic clock drops.
If hitches occur only while moving the mouse, test 1,000 Hz instead of 4,000 or 8,000 Hz, another USB port, another mouse and the game’s raw-input option. High polling is not inherently bad; confirm it with frame-time evidence.

15. Recognize an engine-side limit
Traversal streaming, runtime shader compilation, garbage collection, main-thread simulation, network synchronization and a broken game patch can remain after every system test. If the same hitch appears on different hardware and operating systems, check patch notes, community reports and the developer’s support channel. The appropriate fix may be a recommended API/settings combination or waiting for a patch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Frame generation is not a frame-pacing repair
Frame generation can raise displayed FPS, but it cannot repair severe native-frame pacing problems. Long and short base frames remain underneath the generated images; perceived smoothness may improve in some scenes without removing the CPU, shader or traversal hitch. NVIDIA discusses frame-generation and shader features as separate mechanisms (NVIDIA announcement).
Revert checklist
- Restore the previous driver or reinstall the known-good branch.
- Return the FPS limiter to its original value or disable it.
- Restore HAGS, Game Mode, Auto HDR and per-game windowed optimization to their recorded states.
- Apply
mpo_restore.regand restart if MPO was disabled. - Re-enable overlays and recording one at a time.
- Do not repeatedly clear shader caches; allow the rebuilt cache to finish compiling.
What the symptom usually tells you
First-launch stutter points toward shaders; area-transition stutter toward streaming, VRAM, storage or the main thread; borderless-only problems toward presentation and overlays; second-monitor problems toward MPO or refresh interaction; mouse-only hitches toward polling or USB; and cross-game problems toward drivers, Windows, thermals or background software. When none of those tests changes the repeatable hitch, the game engine or its current patch is the most credible explanation.
