If Genshin Impact remains on “Checking for updates”, do not reinstall the whole game immediately. The cause may be HoYoPlay, your network, a VPN or proxy, antivirus software, insufficient working space, damaged files, or a temporary HoYoverse service problem. Start with the low-risk checks below and stop as soon as the launcher updates normally.
This guide focuses on Windows PC and HoYoPlay, then covers Android, iPhone/iPad, PlayStation, and Xbox. Exact launcher labels can change between versions.
First, identify where the process stops
The wording of the error helps narrow the diagnosis:

- Download freezes at 0% or a fixed percentage: check storage, network stability, permissions, antivirus interference, and damaged packages.
- Download reaches 100% but verification or extraction fails: suspect incomplete files, security software, insufficient working space, or drive problems.
- The game launches but repeatedly asks for an update: you may be using an old shortcut, the wrong launcher, or a launcher that does not own the installed files.
- The game reaches the login screen and then fails: use the in-game resource-integrity check rather than treating it as a HoYoPlay startup problem.
17 ways to fix the problem
1. Check for maintenance or a widespread outage
Before changing files, check current HoYoverse announcements and support channels. Look for reports from players on multiple platforms and regions, especially if the issue began immediately after scheduled maintenance or a major patch.

If many players are affected, wait and retry later. No local repair can fix an unavailable update service. Do not assume maintenance is currently happening without checking the date, region, and official announcements.
HoYoverse lists network problems, storage, damaged files, launcher issues, antivirus interference, permissions, and service-related update failures among the possible causes of download problems. See the official update troubleshooting guide.
2. Close HoYoPlay completely
- Close Genshin Impact.
- Exit HoYoPlay from the Windows system tray.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End remaining HoYoPlay, Genshin Impact, or launcher processes.
- Open HoYoPlay again and retry.
A launcher process that did not close correctly can leave update files or network sessions locked. HoYoverse recommends restarting the launcher for update and verification failures.
3. Restart the computer
Restart Windows after closing the launcher. This can release locked files, clear a failed launcher process, and reset parts of the local network stack. It is a useful preliminary step, but it is not proof that the installation is corrupted if it does not help.
4. Try another internet connection
Test Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, another Wi-Fi network, or a phone hotspot if practical. Restarting the router is also worthwhile.
If HoYoPlay works on a hotspot but not on home Wi-Fi, the game installation is less likely to be the problem. DNS filtering, ISP routing, parental controls, firewall rules, or the router may be blocking or mishandling the launcher connection. HoYoverse recommends a stable connection and switching networks when necessary.
5. Temporarily disable VPN or proxy routing
- Disconnect from your VPN.
- Turn off any Windows proxy setting currently in use.
- Restart HoYoPlay and test again.
- Re-enable the VPN afterward if it was not responsible.
VPNs can create a bad route, regional-service conflict, or authentication problem. They can occasionally help with a broken route, but they are not a universal fix. HoYoverse’s PC launcher guidance specifically identifies VPNs and proxies as possible causes of failed update checks.

6. Check hosts-file and network filtering changes
A modified Windows hosts file, DNS filter, school or work network, parental-control service, or third-party firewall can block the launcher’s update endpoints.

Test another network before making advanced changes. If you inspect the hosts file, change only entries you understand. Do not delete arbitrary lines copied from an online “fix.” If you are unsure, restore the standard Windows configuration with qualified technical help or contact Microsoft or HoYoverse support. HoYoverse’s PC FAQ names hosts files and network settings as relevant checks.
7. Launch HoYoPlay directly
Open the current HoYoPlay installation instead of using an old desktop shortcut, a stale pinned shortcut, or a third-party storefront shortcut. Update from the launcher that owns the installation.
If you installed through Epic Games or another storefront, do not automatically mix it with HoYoPlay. First determine which launcher manages the existing files. An old shortcut can open the wrong executable and make a working installation appear unable to update.
HoYoPlay is the official PC launcher and update path documented by HoYoverse. Its FAQ also explains how to locate existing game files.
8. Run HoYoPlay as administrator
- Right-click the HoYoPlay shortcut.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Retry the update.
If this works, permissions on the installation or update directory may have prevented HoYoPlay from writing files. Treat administrator mode as a troubleshooting test, not a reason to run the game permanently with elevated privileges.
9. Check free space on the installation drive
Check the drive containing Genshin Impact, not just the drive where Windows is installed. An update may need space for the download, temporary extraction, verification, and replacement of old files. The required amount varies by version and patch.
Keep substantially more free space than the displayed download size, and follow any requirement shown by the launcher. An older HoYoverse FAQ mentioned more than 35 GB for a particular update scenario; that figure is not a universal requirement for every current release.
10. Check antivirus quarantine and exclusions
Antivirus software can quarantine, lock, or modify an update file, leaving HoYoPlay stuck or causing verification and extraction errors.
- Open your antivirus quarantine or protection history.
- Check whether HoYoPlay or genuine Genshin files were blocked.
- Restore a file only after confirming that it belongs to the official installation.
- If necessary, add the official launcher and game folder to the narrowest possible exclusion.
- Retry the update, then restore normal protection if the exclusion is no longer needed.
HoYoverse specifically identifies antivirus interference in extraction errors such as 8002 or 2002. Never download replacement DLL files from random websites, and do not permanently disable antivirus protection.

11. Use HoYoPlay’s “Repair Now” option
- Open HoYoPlay.
- Select the Genshin Impact entry.
- Open the launcher’s settings or repair control.
- Select Repair Now.
- Wait for verification to finish.
- Close and reopen HoYoPlay, then try the update again.
Repair Now is safer than deleting the entire game directory because it lets the official launcher identify and repair damaged resources. The icon or menu position may change, so look for the control named Repair Now.

12. Check resource integrity from the game client
Use this method only if the game can reach the login screen:
- Select the wrench icon on the login screen, or
- Open Paimon Menu → Settings → Resources → Check Resource Integrity.
This is a separate path from launcher repair. It is not useful when HoYoPlay cannot download the required update at all. HoYoverse documents both resource-integrity routes in its troubleshooting guidance.
13. Reinstall only the launcher first
If HoYoPlay itself appears damaged, reinstall the launcher without immediately deleting the large game directory.
- Note the existing game installation path.
- Verify that you can sign back into your HoYoverse account.
- Uninstall only HoYoPlay.
- Download the current launcher from the official HoYoverse website.
- Install it and use its scan, link, import, or manually select option if offered.
- Point it to the existing game directory before starting a new download.
HoYoPlay can link existing game resources obtained through official channels, although the exact relinking interface may change. Do not start a second full installation until the launcher has checked the existing files.

14. Try another local folder or drive
Filesystem errors, permissions, or drive-specific problems can cause downloads and extraction to fail. If possible, use another local drive or a simple local folder with adequate free space. Avoid protected directories and network locations while troubleshooting.
HoYoverse recommends trying another disk location for extraction errors. An SSD may improve installation and loading performance, but it is not a guaranteed cure for a launcher stuck on “Checking for updates.”
15. Update Windows and system components
Install pending Windows updates and update graphics drivers from your GPU manufacturer, then restart. This is most relevant if HoYoPlay or the game also crashes, opens incorrectly, or began failing after an operating-system or driver change.
A graphics-driver update is not a universal fix for a network-stage update check. HoYoverse may request diagnostic information such as dxdiag when investigating persistent launcher or game failures.

16. Use the correct update path on mobile and consoles
Android
Open Google Play, search for Genshin Impact, and select Update. Check the device’s available storage and connection if the update is unavailable.
iPhone and iPad
Open the App Store, tap your account icon, find Genshin Impact under available updates, and select Update.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
Highlight Genshin Impact, press the Options button, and choose Check for Update. If the update fails, follow Sony’s current application-update troubleshooting steps.
Xbox
Open your Xbox library or the game’s Manage game and add-ons controls and check for updates. Menu names can vary by Xbox system-software version.

17. Reinstall from an official source and contact support
Use a complete reinstall only after repair, network checks, security checks, and launcher reinstall have failed.
- Confirm your login method and record your UID and server.
- Save screenshots or a screen recording of the error.
- Uninstall Genshin Impact.
- Restart the device.
- Download the current client from HoYoverse, Google Play, the App Store, PlayStation Store, or Xbox’s official store.
- Install it without interrupting the first update.
Reinstalling the client does not normally delete server-linked account progress, but you should verify your login details before uninstalling. Avoid unofficial patch archives and replacement files.

What not to do
- Do not download random DLLs or unofficial patch files.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus protection.
- Do not delete the entire game directory before confirming your account login and understanding the download consequence.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall while an official outage is affecting multiple players.
- Do not assume a fixed storage number applies to every patch or version.
- Do not run two different launchers against the same installation without first identifying which one owns the files.
When to contact HoYoverse support
Contact support after the official repair and launcher reinstall fail, or sooner if you suspect an account, regional, or service-side issue. Include:
- UID and server
- Platform, device model, and operating-system version
- Country or region and internet provider
- The time the error occurred
- A screenshot or video showing the exact message
- PC specifications where relevant
- Antivirus name and version
- Launcher or game logs if support requests them
These details help distinguish a local installation problem from a network route, launcher, or service problem. HoYoverse’s support articles provide additional guidance for update failures, extraction errors, crashes, and requested diagnostics.
