18 Unreal Engine Tutorials and Courses from the 2021 List: What Still Holds Up?

The 2021 Unreal Engine course list is not a current ranking. Here is how to evaluate its 18 picks, choose by skill goal and start with Epic’s UE5 learning resources.

The original 18-course list is a 2021 snapshot dominated by Unreal Engine 4 material, so it is not a reliable current ranking. Some topics—Blueprints, C++, gameplay systems, lighting and animation—remain useful, but course versions, project files and availability need checking. In 2026, Epic’s documentation identifies Unreal Engine 5.8 as its current reference; beginners should start with Epic’s current learning path or a clearly maintained UE5 course, then choose a specialist course for a defined goal.

Quick recommendations by goal

Your goal Best starting point What to look for next
First time using a game engine Epic’s Unreal Engine for New Users A small project-based UE5 course if you want guided exercises and instructor support.
Make a game without starting in code A current Blueprint-first course One that teaches functions, components, interfaces and project organization—not just a single large event graph.
Use Unreal as a programmer Epic’s C++ Programming Quick Start and a maintained C++ course Confirm the IDE/toolchain, Engine version and downloadable project files match your setup.
Architectural or product visualization A focused visualization course Check its modeling/import pipeline, renderer, plugins and project version before committing.
Multiplayer Learn Unreal fundamentals first Then take a networking course that clearly identifies its Engine version and covers replication and testing.
Free learning Epic’s Get Started documentation, learning content and samples Build and package a small project instead of stopping at video watching.

Epic’s beginner path separates programmer, designer and artist tracks and takes learners from setup and editor navigation toward a project and packaging. It is a better current baseline than treating an old list of unrelated courses as one curriculum.

Is the 2021 list still current?

No—not as a current “best courses” ranking. The original TechNorms list was explicitly a 2021 update and includes many courses labeled UE4, 2019 or 2020. Epic’s current Get Started documentation is organized for Unreal Engine 5.8. Interfaces and workflows have changed, and exact old prices, ratings, enrollments, trial terms and availability should be treated as historical unless a vendor currently confirms them.

An older UE4 course is not automatically useless. Actors, components, gameplay concepts, Blueprints, C++, materials and animation fundamentals transfer. Menu locations, project setup, rendering workflows, plugins, asset pipelines and packaging details are more likely to differ. Nanite and Lumen workflows are examples of UE5-specific topics that an older course may not cover. Follow the course’s stated version where possible; do not assume a UE4 project will open or behave perfectly in UE5.

The 18 recommendations span distinct formats: individual Udemy courses, Epic learning resources, an edX/RIT course, LinkedIn Learning and Pluralsight catalogs, and Skillshare classes. A catalog subscription, short class, official documentation page and full project course are not interchangeable products. Compare them by learning outcome and maintenance rather than placing them in one popularity ranking.

Original recommendation Best fit How to treat it now
Unreal Engine 4: The Complete Beginner’s Course — Udemy New learners wanting a guided introduction Potentially useful for fundamentals if its current page confirms access to the course files and explains UE5 compatibility. If it remains UE4-only, regard it as legacy material rather than the first choice for learning today’s interface.
Unreal Engine C++ Developer: Learn C++ and Make Video Games — Udemy Programmers seeking a game-focused C++ path Check its latest update, Engine version, build-tool instructions and project downloads. Unreal C++ adds Engine-specific conventions to ordinary C++; it is not the easiest starting point for someone who has never programmed.
Unreal Online Learning — Epic Games Free or official learning material across skill areas Keep the official-resource recommendation, but use Epic’s current new-user path, Get Started hub and maintained learning content rather than assuming a 2021 description reflects today’s catalog.
Getting Started with Unreal Engine — edX/RIT Learners who prefer a structured course format Verify that it is still offered, identify its Engine version and distinguish course access from any paid certificate. The original listing is not evidence of current availability.
Unreal Engine 4 Mastery: Create Multiplayer Games with C++ — Udemy Learners with Unreal and programming foundations who want multiplayer Specialist material, not a first course. Networking APIs and workflows are version-sensitive; confirm the Engine version and whether the exercises still build.
Unreal Engine 4: How to Develop Your First Two Games — Udemy Beginners who learn by completing games The project-based format is useful in principle. Check whether both projects and instructions work in the stated version; a complete small game is a stronger outcome than an interface tour.
Unreal Engine 4: Realtime Motion Graphics — LinkedIn Learning Motion-design learners Use only if the class remains available and fits your workflow. Check the version and whether it relies on older Matinee-era methods; current cinematic work commonly uses Sequencer.
Unreal Engine Product Visualization — LinkedIn Learning Product artists and visualization professionals Evaluate it as a niche visualization class, not a general game-development foundation. Confirm current availability, import workflow and version.
Unreal Multiplayer Master: Video Game Development in C++ — Udemy/GameDev.tv Learners pursuing multiplayer game programming Potentially relevant after the basics, provided the current course page confirms maintained code and Engine compatibility. Do not infer current support from the original title.
Unreal Engine Online Courses — Pluralsight Subscribers seeking a catalog rather than one course This is a platform category, not a single curriculum. Inspect the current course list, skill levels, project files and Engine versions before subscribing for this purpose.
Unreal Engine 4: Beginners Guide to Lighting — Udemy Artists and developers seeking a lighting introduction Useful as a focused supplement if it teaches transferable lighting judgment. Verify the rendering workflow and version; do not use a lighting-only class as your first complete Unreal course.
Unreal Engine 4: Intro to Game Design — Skillshare Beginners exploring game-design concepts in Unreal Treat it as an introduction or supplement. Check that the class is available and that its project and exercises go beyond following along passively.
Introduction to Character Animation in Unreal Engine 4 — Skillshare Artists exploring character-animation workflows Specialized rather than foundational. Check version, animation pipeline and whether included assets or software are still accessible.
Unreal Engine 2020 Absolute Beginner Masterclass — Skillshare New users considering a broad introduction The date in its title is a warning to verify current relevance. Prefer a maintained UE5 beginner course for learning the current editor unless the class has been substantially updated.
Unreal Engine 4: Character Skill System — Skillshare Learners interested in a character gameplay system A narrow project topic, not a general beginner path. Confirm the code or Blueprint setup and Engine version before relying on it.
Unreal Essential Training (2019) — LinkedIn Learning Readers seeking an older broad overview Its 2019 label makes it legacy material unless the provider has updated it. Use it for concepts only when current courses or documentation fill version-specific gaps.
Unreal Engine 4 VR Interior Tour with 3ds Max, V-Ray, Photoshop — Udemy Architectural visualization learners using a particular 3D pipeline Highly specialized, not a general Unreal course. Confirm headset/runtime needs, plugin and renderer versions, export steps and access to source assets.
Unreal Engine 4: Learn to Make a Game Prototype in UE4 — Udemy Beginners who want to prototype a game A prototype can be a useful first result if the course is coherent and its files work. Check version support and whether it teaches debugging and project structure as well as assembly.

Start with Epic’s free learning path

  1. Install the Engine and create a project. Follow Epic’s installation and project setup guidance. The standard route uses the Epic Games Launcher; allow for Engine, project, asset and derived-data storage rather than planning only for the installer.
  2. Learn the Editor and viewport. Use the new-user series to orient yourself before attempting a large project.
  3. Choose a track. Epic’s beginner material distinguishes programmer, designer and artist learning. A programmer should add C++; a designer can begin with Blueprints and level work; an artist should prioritize assets, materials and visual workflows.
  4. Finish one small experience. A puzzle room, exploration scene, simple third-person loop or small visualization scene is enough. Complete the loop: create, test, fix and package.
  5. Inspect an official sample. Epic’s Samples and Tutorials page explains where to find samples, templates and feature examples. Prefer a sample for a compatible Engine version, test it before editing and keep experiments in a copy or source-control branch.
  6. Package the result. Packaging reveals configuration or asset problems that may not appear while a project runs only in the Editor. Epic includes packaging in its beginner learning sequence.

Samples are working projects to inspect, not shortcuts to understanding. Look at folder structure, identify which behavior uses Blueprints or C++, and make one change at a time. Asset and plugin compatibility varies, so avoid making your first project depend on multiple third-party add-ons.

Blueprints or C++: which should you learn first?

Start with Blueprints when… Start with C++ when…
You are a designer, artist or new developer; you want to prototype interactions; or visual iteration is your immediate goal. You already know programming basics, want to build reusable systems, or need to work directly in code and Unreal’s gameplay architecture.
Blueprints let you build logic visually, but still require debugging and organization. Large, tangled graphs become hard to maintain. Unreal C++ requires a suitable development environment, compilation and Engine-specific reflection conventions; setup is part of the learning curve.

These are not mutually exclusive paths. Blueprint-first learners can add C++ when systems become complex or reusable; programmers often use Blueprints for rapid iteration and designer-facing controls. Epic’s C++ Quick Start walks through creating a C++ project, adding an Actor class, editing it in an IDE, compiling and testing in the Editor. For setup and troubleshooting, use Epic’s C++ development environment guide and C++ tutorials.

Choose a course for the work you want to do

Game design and general development

Choose a course that takes one small game from project setup through a playable loop. Look for input, interactions, UI, debugging and packaging, not only a tour of the Editor. A tutorial can teach tools without teaching game loops, state management, version control, performance profiling or deployment; a certificate alone does not demonstrate those skills.

Programming

Choose a maintained C++ path only if you can meet its toolchain prerequisites. Common friction includes missing compiler workloads or SDKs, stale project files, Engine-version mismatch and Unreal Header Tool or reflection errors. Read setup instructions before enrolling, and keep a clean copy of the project before changing generated or intermediate files.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Environment art, animation and cinematics

Choose according to the output: lighting and materials for environments, animation workflows for characters, or cameras and Sequencer for cinematic work. These specialist courses can be excellent second steps, but they rarely teach the complete project skills a first-time Unreal user needs.

Architecture, product visualization and VR

Check the content pipeline as carefully as the Unreal version: source modeling software, import method, renderer, plugins, headset and runtime may all matter. The VR interior-tour course in the old list, for example, names 3ds Max, V-Ray and Photoshop; it should be chosen only if that workflow matches your tools and goal.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Networking

Take multiplayer after basic project and gameplay concepts. A course should state which Engine version it uses and clarify the scope of its networking work, such as replication, sessions or server architecture. Networking examples are especially vulnerable to changes in APIs and project setup.

How to judge a course before paying

  • Version: Is it explicitly current UE5, an older UE5 release, UE4 or unspecified? Does the instructor describe compatibility limits?
  • Finished result: Does it leave you with a playable or presentable project, source files and exercises?
  • Maintenance: Is there a visible recent update, active Q&A or maintained resource repository? A 2021 listing alone does not establish present support.
  • Prerequisites: Does it assume C++, 3D modeling, a particular IDE, VR equipment or other software?
  • Teaching depth: Does it explain why systems work, how to debug them and how to organize a project, or only ask you to reproduce steps?
  • Format and terms: Distinguish a one-course purchase from a subscription catalog, free learning material from a paid certificate, and a course from separately required assets. Terms and prices vary by region and time.

Before buying, check the live provider page for the last update date, supported Engine version, included downloads and recent learner feedback. Availability and terms can change; the 2021 article is not a current vendor listing.

Common traps—and how to avoid them

  • Following the wrong version blindly: First identify whether the mismatch is only a moved menu or a changed system. Use current documentation for version-specific setup and do not expect identical screens.
  • Copying without understanding: Pause after each feature and explain its inputs, outputs and dependencies. Rebuild a small part without the video before adding complexity.
  • Building one giant Blueprint: Break repeated logic into functions or components, use clear names and keep related assets organized.
  • Starting with a commercial-scale game: Scope the first project to one loop that can be tested and packaged.
  • Installing too many plugins or assets: Confirm compatibility and licensing for each dependency. Keep a clean backup before adding content.
  • Leaving packaging until the end: Package early enough to catch configuration and missing-asset problems while the project is still small.
  • Equating a certificate with proficiency: Keep the finished project and be ready to explain and modify the systems it contains.

Which course should you choose?

If you are completely new, start with Epic’s current beginner path, then choose a maintained UE5 project course if you need structure. If you already program, pair Epic’s C++ setup and quick start with a current coding course. If your goal is visualization, animation, VR or multiplayer, learn the fundamentals first and choose a specialist course only after checking its pipeline and version. The best choice is the one that gets you to a small finished project you understand—not the one with the biggest historical enrollment number.
