The right method depends on which PlayStation games you mean. For PS4 and PS5 games, use PS Remote Play to stream games from a console you own. For PSP games, use the Android version of PPSSPP to run legally obtained game files locally on your phone. Neither app plays the entire PlayStation catalog.
Choose the right method

Remote Play streams a game from your console: the PS4 or PS5 does the processing, while the Android phone receives the video and sends back your controls. PPSSPP is local emulation: the phone runs PSP software itself, so it does not require a PlayStation console or an internet connection after setup.
What “PlayStation games” means

That distinction matters. Android does not natively install PS4 or PS5 games, and PPSSPP is a PSP emulator, not a universal PlayStation emulator.

Method 1: Play PS4 and PS5 games with PS Remote Play
PS Remote Play is the practical choice if you own a PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, or PS5 Digital Edition and want to play its compatible games away from the television. The game remains installed and running on the console; the phone is effectively a remote screen and controller.

What you need
- A PS4 or PS5 with current system software.
- The PlayStation account used on that console.
- An Android phone or tablet.
- The official PS Remote Play app from Google Play.
- A broadband or mobile-data connection.
- A compatible game.
- Optional: a DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense, DualSense Edge, or compatible mobile controller.
Sony lists Android 9 or later for on-screen controls, Android 10 or later for DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth support, and Android 12 or later for DualSense Bluetooth support. Sony also states that Remote Play requires at least 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Mobile-data use counts against your cellular allowance. Enable Remote Play on the console
- On PS5, open Settings → System → Remote Play and enable Remote Play.
- On PS4, open Settings → Remote Play Connection Settings and enable Remote Play.
- If you want to wake the console remotely, open PS5 Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network.
- Leave the console powered on or in Rest Mode.
Menu labels can change with system-software updates, but the relevant settings remain under Remote Play and Rest Mode or Power Saving. The console must be online and signed in to the account you will use on the phone.
Install and connect the Android app
- Install the official PS Remote Play app from Google Play.
- Sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console.
- Choose PS5 or PS4.
- Let the app search for the console.
- If automatic discovery fails, follow the app’s instructions to enter the console pairing code.
- Once connected, select the game on the console and start playing.
Remote Play works over Wi-Fi or mobile data, but the experience depends heavily on upload speed from the home connection, download speed at the phone, latency, congestion, and carrier restrictions. Test it on your home Wi-Fi first before relying on it while travelling.

Connect a controller
You can use the app’s on-screen controls, but physical controls are usually more comfortable for longer sessions. Pair a controller directly with the phone rather than routing it through another device.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
- DUALSHOCK 4: Bluetooth support requires Android 10 or later.
- DualSense: Bluetooth support requires Android 12 or later.
- Touch controls: Available on Android 9 or later.
- USB-C controllers: Often provide a convenient all-in-one handheld setup and avoid Bluetooth pairing.
Controller features can be reduced on Android. Depending on the device and connection method, touch-pad functions, motion controls, vibration, audio, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, or the microphone may not be available. Sony lists the Backbone One—PlayStation Edition as compatible with Android phones running Android 10 or later. Check phone fit carefully if you use a case or a telescopic controller.
Games that may not work
Remote Play is not a free cloud catalog. The game must be installed or otherwise playable through the console, and not every title is compatible. Sony excludes games that require PlayStation VR, PlayStation VR2, or additional peripherals beyond supported controllers. Games that must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium membership are also not compatible with Remote Play.
Remote Play troubleshooting
The console cannot be found
- Confirm that the phone and console use the same PlayStation account.
- Check that Remote Play is enabled and the console is online.
- Update the console system software.
- Wake the console manually, or verify its Rest Mode network settings.
- Make sure the app has permission to access the network.
It works at home but not elsewhere
Test another Wi-Fi network and mobile data separately. A weak home upload connection, strict NAT, carrier congestion, VPN software, or a console that cannot be reached from Rest Mode can prevent an away-from-home connection. If the connection is unstable, lower the app’s mobile-streaming quality, use a stronger Wi-Fi signal, try a 5-GHz network where appropriate, and stop other high-bandwidth activity.

The picture is blurry or controls lag
Move closer to the router, reduce competing traffic, and lower streaming quality. Network latency cannot be fixed with a faster controller: Remote Play still has to send input to the console and return a video stream to the phone.

Method 2: Play PSP games locally with PPSSPP
PPSSPP emulates Sony’s PlayStation Portable. It can run PSP games directly on Android, making it the better choice for offline play when you have legally obtained PSP game files. It does not run PS4, PS5, PS3, PS2, or PS1 games.
Install PPSSPP safely
- Open the official PPSSPP download page or find PPSSPP on Google Play.
- Install PPSSPP or PPSSPP Gold. The free version is sufficient to begin.
- Open the app and grant file access when Android requests it.
- Create or select a dedicated folder for PSP games.
- Copy your legally obtained game files to that folder.
- In PPSSPP, browse to the folder and select a game.
- Configure the on-screen controls or pair a Bluetooth or USB-C controller.
The official download page lists Google Play, a direct Android APK, and F-Droid as distribution channels. At the time covered by the supplied research, it showed version 1.20.4; app versions change, so check the official page rather than treating that number as permanent.
Game files and storage
PSP games are commonly encountered as ISO or CSO images, although the exact file and dumping workflow depends on how you obtained your own copy. Compressed archives generally need to be extracted before PPSSPP can use the game. Keep files in a clearly named folder with enough free storage and browse to that folder manually if the games do not appear.
PPSSPP does not include commercial games. Do not download copyrighted game images, BIOS files, or modified APKs from unofficial sites. Use game dumps you are legally entitled to use and check the rules that apply where you live. The safest app sources are the official PPSSPP site, Google Play, and F-Droid.

Start with conservative performance settings
PSP performance varies by chipset, Android version, emulator build, game, thermal conditions, and graphics settings. There is no universal guarantee that every PSP game will run smoothly on every phone.
- Keep the default graphics backend initially.
- Start at native resolution or 2× rendering resolution.
- Raise resolution only after the game remains smooth.
- Use a frame-rate display or in-game performance indicator.
- Lower rendering resolution and disable enhancements when you see stutter, heat, or rapid battery drain.
- Close demanding background apps and keep the phone cool.
PPSSPP troubleshooting
The game does not appear
- Extract the archive instead of pointing PPSSPP at the archive itself.
- Browse to the correct folder manually.
- Confirm that the file is a supported PSP game image.
- Re-scan the folder or reopen PPSSPP.
- Check that the game is not buried several levels deep in nested folders.
The game crashes or runs slowly
Restore default settings, lower the rendering resolution, and try the other available graphics backend. Disable texture enhancements and post-processing, close background apps, and avoid aggressive third-party “performance booster” apps that may cause instability.
Touch controls feel poor
Reposition or resize the virtual buttons in PPSSPP’s control settings. A USB-C controller is usually the simplest way to reduce practical input delay; Bluetooth is more convenient if cable-free play matters more.
What about PS1 and PS2 games?
PS1 and PS2 emulation requires different software from PPSSPP. Do not install PPSSPP expecting it to run games from those systems.

PS2 emulation on Android is also a separate, advanced and device-dependent category. Older guides often recommend AetherSX2, but app maintenance and official distribution status can change, so it should not be presented as a current, officially supported recommendation without checking a current source. Avoid unofficial emulator APK mirrors and unauthorized BIOS or game downloads.
Which option should you use?
- You own a PS4 or PS5: Choose PS Remote Play for that console’s compatible games.
- You want current, high-end PlayStation games: Remote Play is the relevant Android route, but you still need the console and a good network.
- You own PSP games and want offline play: Choose PPSSPP.
- Your internet connection is poor: Local PSP emulation is more dependable because gameplay does not depend on a live stream.
- You want the easiest controls: Use a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 where supported, or a directly connected USB-C controller. A controller is optional because both apps offer touch controls.
- You do not own a console and do not have PSP game files: Neither method provides a legitimate shortcut to the modern PlayStation catalog.
A controller can improve either method, but it does not create Remote Play access without a PS4 or PS5. For a wired handheld setup, a USB-C controller such as the Backbone One USB-C may suit compatible phones. For PS5 owners who prefer the original layout, the DualSense Wireless Controller is an option, although some advanced features may not work through Android Remote Play. Check connector clearance, phone-case fit, and current pricing before buying.
The bottom line
For PS4 and PS5 games, install PS Remote Play and stream from your own console. For PSP games, install PPSSPP and load legally obtained PSP game files locally. They solve different problems: one brings a console to your phone over a network, while the other emulates a portable PlayStation system on the phone. There is no single Android app that natively runs the entire PlayStation library.
