2024 D&D Player’s Handbook Class Tier List: What’s Strongest, and Why

Cleric, Wizard, and Bard top this 2024 D&D class tier list for a mixed campaign—but party needs, levels, and play style can change the answer.

Under the assumptions below, Cleric, Wizard, and Bard make the strongest all-around tier; Paladin, Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, Fighter, and Monk are also excellent choices. That is an editorial ranking, not an official D&D result: the 2024 Player’s Handbook describes classes and their features but does not publish a comparative power list. Your level range, party, encounter mix, and preferred play style can change which class is best for you.

What is the best class in the 2024 Player’s Handbook?

For a mixed campaign running from levels 1–12, I place Cleric, Wizard, and Bard in the top tier for the breadth of problems they can help solve alongside their contributions in combat. This assumes a four-character party with a reasonably balanced spread of roles, a mix of combat, exploration, and social scenes, and about two to four encounters between long rests. It assumes players use their class features and resources thoughtfully, but not that they follow highly optimized builds.

Here, “strong” means consistently useful across that range of situations: combat impact, versatility, reliability as resources ebb and return, and the ability to cover a party need. It does not mean highest damage in every fight. Ease of learning matters when choosing a character, but is not a measure of power.

The tiers are broad groups, not a precise ranking within each group. They reflect those assumptions rather than a universal verdict. The official class overview’s complexity labels are onboarding guidance, not strength ratings; class performance also depends on party composition and what the campaign asks characters to do.

Tier Classes Why they land here under these assumptions
S Cleric, Wizard, Bard Each can contribute in more than one pillar of play, and their class toolkits give the party options beyond a single combat job. Their relative strengths differ, so this is not an order of superiority.
A Druid, Paladin, Sorcerer, Warlock, Fighter, Monk Each can be highly effective, but the breadth or consistency of its contribution is more dependent on the campaign, resource pattern, player choices, or party role than the top group.
B Barbarian, Ranger, Rogue These can be strong characters, not bad picks. In this mixed-campaign comparison, their contribution is more sensitive to encounter type, party needs, or how much of the adventure uses their particular strengths.

A tier is not a recommendation to avoid a class. If your group needs a dependable front-line character, Fighter or Barbarian may contribute more to that specific party than another spellcaster. If your campaign emphasizes travel and wilderness challenges, Ranger and Druid can rise. If you mostly want to play a particular fantasy, that preference may matter more than a broad comparison.

What makes the ranking change at a real table?

Level range

This list considers levels 1–12 rather than claiming the same order applies from level 1 through the highest levels. Class features arrive at different levels, so a short campaign may end before a character gains tools that would matter in a longer one. A campaign concentrated in a narrow level band should be judged on what characters can actually do there.

Party composition

Individual power and party contribution are different questions. A class may look less distinctive when several characters already cover its role, and more valuable when the group lacks that capability. The Roll20 D&D 2024 class-selection overview describes a classic balanced party of Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, and Wizard, then gives alternatives for those roles. That is a useful reminder that filling a gap can matter as much as a class’s position on a general tier list.

Encounter and rest patterns

A combat-heavy game, a game with frequent social challenges, and an exploration-led campaign reward different tools. So do tables that allow characters to recover resources often versus those that make them last through more encounters. A class that excels in a particular scene may feel exceptional there without being the most consistently useful across an entire campaign.

Build choices and play style

Subclass selection, spell and feature choices, and decisions during play affect outcomes. The tiers do not assume a specific build or claim to measure every possible character. A player who enjoys managing a complex toolkit may get more from a class than a player who would rather have a simpler turn-to-turn routine.

How did the 2024 Player’s Handbook change the classes?

D&D Beyond’s official “Updates in the Player’s Handbook (2024)” article says the book has twelve player classes, each with four subclasses. Its class-by-class notes identify selected new and revised features; the table below is a quick orientation, not a full rules audit. Consult the 2024 book for exact wording and interactions.

Which class should you play in D&D?

Start with the experience you want at the table, then consider what your group needs. The official class overview pairs each class with broad interests, a primary ability, and a complexity rating. Those prompts are more useful for choosing a character than treating a tier label as a command.

  • Well Balanced Dice: Using precise dice mold production to ensure the balance and practicality of the dice
  • Want a straightforward martial starting point? Fighter and Rogue are rated low complexity in the Roll20 overview. Low complexity does not mean low power; it can simply make the class easier to approach.
  • Want a flexible spellcasting toolkit? Cleric, Wizard, and Bard sit in the top tier under this article’s assumptions, but they offer different class identities and have different complexity ratings. Consider which style of character you actually want to play.
  • Want the class to match a particular party gap? Ask what roles the rest of the group is covering before you settle on a tier. A group without a durable front line, for example, has different needs from one that already has several.
  • Expect a distinctive campaign focus? Think about how often the game will involve the class’s preferred kinds of challenges. A campaign’s actual scenes matter more than a generic ranking.
  • Prefer a character concept over optimization? Pick the class whose fantasy and decisions sound enjoyable. A well-liked character is usually a better choice for that player than a nominally higher-tier class they do not want to play.

If you are undecided, use the official complexity rating as a guide to the learning experience, then check the class’s features and subclasses in the 2024 Player’s Handbook. The ratings listed above come from Roll20’s transcription of the class-selection overview; they are not substitutes for reading the rules that interest you.
