At a steady average of W watts, annual electricity use is W × 8.76 kWh; monthly use for a 30-day month is W × 0.72 kWh. Whether that costs less than cloud hosting depends on your real workload, local tariff, cloud transfer charges, and how much maintenance and recovery you are willing to handle.
Calculate the Mac mini’s electricity cost
Use a plug-in power meter at the wall to measure the complete Mac mini setup during the intended stream. Let the machine run the playlist and encoder long enough to capture a representative average; a momentary reading may miss variation from encoding, storage activity, or other processes.
Annual electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 8,760 × your electricity price per kWh.
30-day electricity cost = average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 × your electricity price per kWh.

Use the rate that applies to the additional consumption on your bill, in your own currency. The calculation covers electricity for the measured device only. It excludes the Mac mini’s purchase price or depreciation, network equipment, any separate display or peripherals, and additional cooling.
Apple’s published figures are reference points, not streaming measurements
Apple’s current power-consumption table lists the 2024 M4 Mac mini at 4 W idle and 65 W maximum, measured at the wall with power-supply and system losses included. Apple defines idle as Finder open with default power-management settings; maximum comes from a compute-intensive test. Neither figure measures a continuous YouTube stream. Apple’s Mac mini power-consumption table is useful context, but measure your configured workload for a meaningful estimate.
The conversion makes those figures easier to compare: 4 W corresponds arithmetically to 35.04 kWh per year, while 65 W corresponds to 569.4 kWh per year. These are translations of Apple’s test figures, not predictions of a Mac mini’s actual streaming draw.

Worked example using a U.S. electricity benchmark
At the U.S. residential average of 17.30 cents/kWh reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration for 2025, the 4 W idle reference would work out to about $6.06 per year, and the 65 W maximum reference to about $98.51 per year. This is national-average arithmetic using Apple’s reference wattages—not a measured stream cost or an estimate of any particular household bill. Electricity rates vary by location and tariff, so substitute your own rate.
The EIA’s May 2026 monthly figure was 18.44 cents/kWh; its release dated September 24, 2026, included data through July 2026. For a current U.S. estimate, check the latest applicable local rate rather than assuming a national benchmark will match it. See the EIA Electric Power Monthly.
Compare the full cost of cloud hosting
A cloud bill is not directly comparable to electricity alone. Include compute, outbound data transfer, storage, and any charges for exceeding included allowances; also account for setup, administration, and recovery work. Confirm that the instance can encode and sustain your selected stream before treating its advertised entry price as a usable solution.

AWS documents the listed Lightsail bundle and its allowance in its Lightsail pricing information. Estimate the stream’s data use and check the applicable transfer and overage terms. The 1 TB allowance should not be assumed sufficient: actual consumption depends on stream bitrate and viewing/egress arrangements, and the service’s suitability must be verified for the intended workload.
If you already own a Mac mini, the immediate comparison is its incremental power and operating cost against a cloud or managed-service bill. If you would need to buy hardware, include acquisition and depreciation in the comparison; a low electricity estimate alone does not establish that the Mac is cheaper.
What the YouTube stream requires
YouTube’s setup guidance says to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. Use the current stream URL and key shown for the intended YouTube broadcast, and keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the source playlist and the quality you intend to send; a higher setting also raises the demands on encoding capacity and network upload. YouTube transcodes live streams into viewer formats, but that does not remove the need for a correctly configured encoder and stable upstream connection. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for current settings and requirements.
Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance does not establish full archiving for a single continuous stream longer than 12 hours. Plan separate recordings or shorter broadcasts if retaining the entire program matters, and check YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright rules. A playlist of prerecorded material still needs appropriate rights, and platform transcodes do not make copyrighted or otherwise unauthorized content permissible.

- Measure electricity: use the configured stream’s average wall draw and your own marginal electricity rate.
- Check cloud fit: verify encoding capacity, sustained network performance, storage, transfer allowance, and possible overages for the selected stream.
- Include reliability work: decide who will notice a dropped stream, restart it, maintain the machine or instance, and protect the stream key.
- Count the hardware fairly: distinguish an already-owned Mac mini from a new purchase, and include relevant equipment costs beyond electricity.
- Value control versus convenience: a local machine gives you direct control but depends on power, internet, and maintenance at home; cloud hosting avoids keeping that computer on, but still requires a suitable service and correct configuration.
