There is no universal cheaper option. To find out how much it costs to run a 24/7 YouTube stream, measure the computer’s average power draw at the wall, multiply it by the hours streamed and your electricity rate, then compare that annual electricity cost with the cloud plan that actually meets your needs. Electricity alone can favor the PC; a cloud service may still be worth paying for if you also value not keeping equipment and a home connection running or monitoring stream interruptions.
Calculate a year of PC electricity
Use whole-system power measured at the wall while the computer is doing the exact streaming workload—not a component’s rated wattage or an unrelated idle reading.
Annual energy (kWh) = average wall draw (W) ÷ 1,000 × operating hours
Annual electricity cost = annual energy (kWh) × your applicable electricity price per kWh

A 365-day, uninterrupted stream runs for 8,760 hours. In a leap year, use 8,784 hours; for a schedule with downtime, use the actual operating hours. A plug-in electricity usage monitor or watt meter can help establish the average whole-system draw; check that any meter is electrically compatible with your region.
Worked example: a 120 W PC
At a steady 120 W for 8,760 hours, the computer uses 120 ÷ 1,000 × 8,760 = 1,051.2 kWh in a non-leap year. This is an illustration, not a measurement of a typical gaming PC or a benchmark.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2025 annual average residential electricity price is 17.30 cents per kWh. At that benchmark rate, 1,051.2 kWh costs about $181.86 a year. EIA identifies its 2025 and 2026 annual values as preliminary estimates; its national average is not necessarily your incremental rate. The published average includes generation, transmission, distribution, taxes and fees. For your decision, use the rate on your electricity bill or the applicable marginal rate during streaming hours, especially if your tariff is time-of-use or tiered. EIA Electric Power Monthly

StreamNeo’s vendor-authored comparison gives a separate illustrative estimate for a 120 W PC: about 86 kWh per month, with local-rate examples of roughly ₹690 at ₹8/kWh in India, $14 at $0.16/kWh in the U.S., and €26 at €0.30/kWh in Europe. These are examples, not measured performance or universal electricity tariffs. The arithmetic above annualizes a non-leap year; the monthly estimate is rounded.
Compare the electricity bill with a cloud subscription
Compare costs over the same 12-month period and for the same number of streams. Use the cloud plan’s actual billing terms, including any annual-plan discount, taxes or fees; do not treat a short free trial as the annual price. A monthly price multiplied by 12 is only a useful estimate if monthly billing remains available at that price for the whole period.

At the EIA benchmark rate, the 120 W PC illustration’s annual electricity cost is about $46 less than the listed 1080p plan’s $228 annualized monthly price. That is an electricity-versus-subscription comparison, not a full ownership-cost verdict. The two options must also meet equivalent stream requirements.
Why the answer can change for your setup
Measure the real workload
A desktop at idle, a gaming PC encoding while a game runs, and a low-power streaming system can draw very different amounts. Measure the complete system under the intended workload for a representative period. If you cannot measure it, calculate multiple clearly labeled wattage scenarios rather than presenting one assumed draw as universal.
Use the rate that applies to the stream
For a flat tariff, multiply by your actual price per kWh. With time-of-use or tiered billing, estimate the marginal price for the hours the computer will operate; a national average is only a point of comparison. The EIA’s 17.30-cent figure is a U.S. residential benchmark for 2025, not a rate for every U.S. household or any other country.

Count comparable service requirements
Check the cloud plan’s resolution and frame-rate limits, simultaneous channels or destinations, included storage, playlists and scheduling, recovery claims, support, trial terms, and cancellation and billing rules. Treat provider descriptions as vendor claims, not independent uptime tests. StreamNeo’s listed tiers illustrate why it matters to compare the needed output rather than just a starting price.
Keep the scope honest
The calculation above counts electricity only. It excludes the PC’s purchase and depreciation, replacement, backup power, home internet, maintenance, and the time spent monitoring failures. A cloud subscription can have its own storage limits, setup requirements and usage terms. Include these only when you know their costs and they apply to your situation; no universal figures for them can be inferred from the electricity calculation.

A PC-based encoder and a cloud service looping uploaded prerecorded video are different setups. YouTube lists computer software and standalone hardware encoders as ways to stream. Its encoder help page says, “Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours.” That technical guidance does not by itself establish whether a particular continuous prerecorded broadcast complies with YouTube policies. No. It is a worked illustration. Your result depends on the average whole-system draw during your particular streaming workload.
Does YouTube’s encoder setup guidance confirm that any 24/7 prerecorded loop is allowed?
