The mini PC’s measured power draw and your electricity tariff determine its energy cost; a rented server’s price, region and outbound-data allowance determine its hosting cost. Compare those figures alongside encoding capacity, outages and administration—not just the monthly bill.
Calculate the mini PC’s electricity cost
Measure the whole system at the wall while it is running the intended streaming workload. A processor’s rated power or an idle reading does not tell you what the complete mini PC uses during a stream. A plug-in electricity usage monitor or wall-plug power meter can provide the wattage input.
For a billing period of H hours, measured draw of W watts and electricity tariff of T per kilowatt-hour:
Electricity cost = (W ÷ 1,000) × H × T
A 30-day month has 720 hours. Use your own tariff and meter reading; this formula is a calculation, not a published estimate for a particular Ryzen mini PC. Include router or display power only if those devices are on because of the stream and you assign their consumption to it. Add hardware purchase allocation, incremental internet charges, backup power or maintenance only where they apply to your setup.

Estimate the rented server’s outbound data
A constant-bitrate stream sends data out of the server continuously. Approximate decimal outbound data for 30 days as:

Monthly GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324
This calculation converts bits to bytes over 30 × 24 hours. It excludes protocol overhead, restarts and unrelated server traffic. At 6 Mbps, that is about 1.94 TB per 30 days; at 10 Mbps, about 3.24 TB. Compare the result with the specific plan’s outbound allowance and overage policy.
For one provider-specific example, Hetzner’s traffic documentation, last changed May 21, 2024, lists 20 TB of monthly traffic for EU CX and CPX cloud servers, variable allowances for some US and Singapore cloud plans, and unlimited traffic for dedicated servers. These are Hetzner terms, not a general server allowance, and provider policies can change. Check the current terms for the plan and location you would actually rent. Hetzner traffic documentation

For a fair comparison, enter your own measured and quoted values. Do not compare an electricity-only figure for the mini PC against a server plan that includes transfer, or overlook transfer overage on the server side.
Check that either machine can sustain the stream
The cost calculation only helps if the hardware can send the stream reliably at the settings you want. A prerecorded loop that needs little processing may have different compute needs from a scene-heavy or live-produced broadcast. Test the actual content, software and encode rather than assuming the two workloads are equivalent.

Choose settings from YouTube’s current guidance
YouTube recommends different bitrates depending on codec, resolution and frame rate. Its official guidance lists H.264 examples of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; check the current table for your selected settings. Those examples also materially affect the monthly transfer estimate above. YouTube identifies H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 among encoder video codec options and recommends RTMPS. Your selected hardware and streaming software must support the encode you plan to send.

Test before leaving it unattended
YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use a pre-stream test with audio and movement similar to the planned content, verify the upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate, and monitor stream health during the event. A short test cannot establish that either machine or network will never fail, but it can expose encoding or connection problems before you rely on a continuous stream.

- Mini PC: depends on home mains power, router and ISP connection. You remain responsible for operating-system updates, encoder supervision, monitoring and recovery after an interruption.
- Rented server: moves the encoder off the home network, but adds recurring hosting costs, provider-region and transfer terms, and server administration. You still need to supervise the stream and plan how it restarts after an interruption.
- Either option: neither is established here as having a guaranteed uninterrupted stream. Consider restart behavior, backup power or network, monitoring and who responds when the feed drops.
The right choice depends on what you value and can maintain: local ownership and measured electricity costs, or moving the workload to a provider while accepting rent and server administration.
A practical decision checklist
- Measure whole-system mini-PC draw while running the intended content and encode.
- Calculate 30-day electricity using 720 hours and your actual tariff.
- Choose YouTube settings and codec, then estimate monthly outbound data using the stream bitrate.
- Check the current server price, location, included transfer and overage terms; account for any extra compute needed.
- Compare power, internet, administration and recovery responsibilities as well as cash costs.
- Run a full test with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health during operation.
