25 Best Android Games for Kids to Play

From ad-free learning apps to creative sandboxes and older-kid adventures, these 25 Android picks include age guidance and practical notes on purchases, ads and online play.

The best Android game for a child depends on age, reading ability, play style and how much online access or spending a parent is comfortable managing. For a free, ad-free learning starting point, try Khan Academy Kids; for a free collection of character-based educational mini-games, try PBS KIDS Games. The picks below also include creative play, puzzles and more complex games for older children, with monetization and supervision notes so “free” or “kid-friendly” does not hide important trade-offs.

Age ranges are practical starting points, not guarantees of fit. Check each game’s current Google Play listing for availability, device compatibility, pricing and purchase details; those can vary by region and change over time.

Quick picks by age and play style

Google Play’s Kids category groups apps into age bands up to 5, ages 6–8 and ages 9–12, and identifies qualifying titles as “Teacher Approved.” Google says the review considers age suitability, quality, enrichment and experience; it is a useful screening signal, not a promise of no purchases, no frustration or a perfect fit for every child. See Google Play’s Kids category and Google’s explanation of Teacher Approved apps.

Which games are free, ad-free or offline?

The clearest no-cost starting choices in this shortlist are Khan Academy Kids and PBS KIDS Games. Khan Academy Kids’ developer says the app has no ads or subscriptions; PBS KIDS Games is presented as free in its Play listing. Treat those claims as specific to those apps, and review live listings before installing.

“Free” can mean a free download with only some content unlocked, while a subscription or purchase may unlock the rest. Likewise, ad-free can mean no third-party advertising but still allow optional paid expansions: Toca Boca World is an example. Do not infer offline access from installation alone. Khan Academy Kids says books and games can be downloaded for offline use, and Toca Boca World’s listing identifies it as offline-capable; the cited claims do not establish that every app in this list works offline.

If a household wants a catalog rather than one game, compare Toca Boca Jr, Sago Mini World and LEGO DUPLO World subscriptions, including trial renewal terms and what the subscription unlocks. LEGO DUPLO World’s listing says its purchases are not shareable through Google Play Family Library. Google Play Pass may include some games, but its catalog changes and not every recommendation is included; check Google Play Pass for current availability and price.

How to choose a game for your child

  • Match the child, not just the age label. Consider reading ability, patience, sensory needs and comfort with purchases. A two-year-old usually needs audio guidance, large touch targets and little time pressure; older children may enjoy longer goals and more complex menus.
  • Choose the right kind of play. Khan Academy Kids, PBS KIDS Games and Teach Your Monster to Read focus on learning activities. Toca Boca World and Sago Mini World are open-ended play environments. Monument Valley, Minecraft and Cut the Rope are conventional games with different forms of challenge.
  • Separate skill practice from educational claims. Prefer specific descriptions such as “practices phonics,” “offers counting activities” or “encourages spatial reasoning.” A Kids-category placement or a high star rating does not establish learning value.
  • Inspect the commercial model. Identify whether the app is free with no IAP, free with optional purchases, subscription-based, paid upfront, or has a marketplace. “Free download” alone does not tell you how much content is available without payment.
  • Check social features and privacy. Look for chat, public profiles, multiplayer, account requirements and the Play listing’s Data safety section. Google requires a privacy-policy link and applies additional Families Policy requirements to apps in its Kids section, but that does not replace reviewing each app. See Google Play’s family-friendly content guidance.
  • Test access and accessibility yourself. Check whether the first launch needs internet, whether content downloads locally, and whether the game has spoken instructions, adjustable difficulty, a slow pace, low visual clutter or external-control support. Do not assume those features from a game’s age range or screenshots.
  • Check the device before buying. Android phones, tablets and Chromebooks differ in screen size, controls and compatibility; Amazon Fire tablets use a different app store. Verify the exact device and Android version against the current listing.

Set up Android before handing over the device

  1. Use a supervised child account. Set up the child’s Google account and manage it with Google Family Link, subject to account and device requirements.
  2. Require approval for downloads and purchases. Configure app approval and purchase authentication so a child cannot install apps or spend through a saved payment method without permission.
  3. Review permissions and privacy. Read the app’s Data safety section and privacy policy, then allow only permissions the game needs.
  4. Configure social features in the game. Turn off or restrict chat, multiplayer, servers and friend requests where available. For games such as Minecraft, review marketplace access and user-generated content as well.
  5. Prepare for offline use. Download intended content over Wi-Fi before travel; an installed game is not necessarily fully usable offline.
  6. Play-test before independent use. Check sound level, difficulty, ads or purchase prompts, navigation and whether the child can exit the game safely.
  7. Set a session limit and revisit it. Use Family Link’s app limits and device ground rules, then recheck settings after significant app or Android updates. Family Link is a control aid, not a substitute for evaluating an individual game.
