Apple and Google Play both curate mobile games for flights, commutes and other stretches without Wi-Fi. Their collections are useful starting points, not proof that every game works fully offline on both Android and iOS. The 25 picks below span puzzles, arcade action, simulations, strategy and more; check the listing for your device and test each game before you travel.
25 games to consider for offline play
These titles appear in Apple or Google Play’s offline-oriented editorial collections. Store availability and offline behavior can vary by platform, region and app version, so the list is a shortlist to check—not a guarantee of cross-platform support.

For longer sessions
Slay the Spire, Tiny Room Story and the simulation games are more naturally suited to settling in for a longer stretch. If you prefer a game with room to experiment, Minecraft offers a different kind of open-ended play; verify that the mode you want is available without a connection.

For strategy and cards
Chess.com, Miracle Merchant and Slay the Spire offer more deliberate choices than a quick arcade run. Some connected features may not be usable offline, so distinguish the core solo experience you want from online play, account features or cloud syncing.
Check offline access before you leave
“Offline” can mean different things: a game may launch without Wi-Fi but still need a connection for initial setup, sign-in, extra downloads, cloud saves or selected modes. Apple’s US collection uses the phrase “No internet required,” while its UK collection is titled “No Wi-Fi? Play these games offline.” Those editorial descriptions identify candidates, not a guarantee for every device or feature.

- Open the current listing for your device. Check that the game is available in your country and compatible with your Android phone or iPhone. Apple’s and Google Play’s collections are regional, and a title appearing in one storefront’s editorial page does not establish availability on the other platform.
- Install it while connected. Allow any first-run download to finish, then open the game and complete any setup or sign-in it requires.
- Test the exact use case. Turn on airplane mode or disable Wi-Fi and mobile data, then relaunch the game. Try the mode you plan to play and check whether progress continues to save as expected.
- Review storage and purchase details. Check the individual listing for current storage requirements, ads, in-app purchases and any other conditions that matter to you. These details vary across titles and can change.
What the store collections do—and do not—tell you
Apple’s US and UK App Store editorial pages and Google Play’s US collection highlight games as options for going offline, commuting or traveling. Together, they cover a wide range of genres, from word and board games to action, simulation, sports, strategy and narrative titles. Google Play’s collection also shows ads or in-app-purchase labels on some featured games; those labels are specific to individual listings and should not be generalized to every game here.
The collections are editorial recommendations rather than systematic tests of each app’s setup, airplane-mode behavior or offline features. Store availability, functionality, pricing and listing details can change, so rely on the current listing for your region and your own pre-trip test for the version installed on your device.
