The best online game for your group depends on four things: how many people are playing, which platforms they own, whether everyone wants to pay, and whether you want cooperation, competition, or a party game. For most mixed-platform groups, start with Fortnite. Choose Codenames Online for a free browser game, Jackbox Games for a large party, Split Fiction for two players on different platforms, Overcooked! All You Can Eat for four-player co-op, and Minecraft for a world you can keep returning to.
This guide covers 28 genuinely useful choices, including browser games, free-to-play games, paid co-op adventures, horror games, RPGs, racing games, and persistent online worlds. It also distinguishes crossplay from simply releasing a game on several platforms—a distinction that can determine whether your game night works at all.
Quick picks
- Best all-purpose cross-platform game: Fortnite
- Best free casual game: Fall Guys
- Best free competitive game: Rocket League
- Best browser game: Codenames Online
- Best large-group party game: Jackbox Games
- Best game for two people on different platforms: Split Fiction
- Best same-platform two-player campaign: It Takes Two
- Best four-player co-op: Overcooked! All You Can Eat, Phasmophobia, or Sea of Thieves

- Best social-deduction game: Among Us
- Best strategy board-game platform: Board Game Arena
- Best Switch 2 group racer: Mario Kart World
- Best deep co-op RPG campaign: Baldur’s Gate 3
These are recommendations by situation, not a rigid ranking from first to last. A four-player horror game is not competing directly with a free drawing game for the same audience.
What cross-platform actually means
Cross-platform release means a game is available on more than one platform. It does not necessarily mean that players on those platforms can join the same match. Crossplay means players on different platforms can play together. Cross-progression is different again: it carries saves, cosmetics, or progress between platforms, but does not by itself create multiplayer compatibility. TechRadar’s crossplay guide explains the distinction.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Always check the exact combination before buying. PC can mean Steam, the Microsoft Store, or another launcher; Switch can mean the original Nintendo Switch or Switch 2; and Minecraft can mean Java or Bedrock. Crossplay may also require a publisher account, a setting to be enabled, the same game version, or compatible mods.

Best browser, party, and low-friction games
1. Codenames Online — best browser game for large groups
What it is: A team word-association game in which clue-givers try to connect several words with one clue while avoiding the opposing team’s words and the dangerous assassin word.
Access: The official browser version is free, requires no account or download, and lets a host create a room and share its link. The official site supports up to 64 players, with up to 32 on each team.
Why play: It is one of the safest recommendations for a mixed group because the controls are nearly effortless and the challenge comes from discussion rather than dexterity. Ten to twelve people is often more comfortable than the technical maximum, since large teams can make clue discussions unwieldy.
Watch-outs: The website does not replace conversation. Start a Discord, Zoom, phone, or other voice/video call separately. Send the room URL privately rather than posting it publicly.
2. Gartic Phone — best for drawing chaos
What it is: A browser-based telephone game that alternates between writing prompts, drawing them, and guessing what other people drew. The final reveal turns small misunderstandings into the main entertainment.
Access: The official FAQ says it runs entirely in a browser and is free. Do not assume a fixed maximum player count: room settings can change, so check the live lobby.
Why play: It works especially well for friends who do not consider themselves gamers. A voice call makes the reveal much funnier. A mouse, drawing tablet, or stylus is usually more comfortable than drawing on a phone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Jackbox Games — best large-group party purchase
What it is: A collection of quick party games built around jokes, voting, trivia, drawing, and bluffing. The host runs the game and everyone else uses a phone or browser device as a controller.
Cost and players: One person buys the Party Pack or standalone game; players do not need to buy the game, install an app, or create a Jackbox account. Individual games matter more than the pack title: most support 1–8 active players, while some support 10 or 16. Additional people can often join as an audience, although audience members may not be able to submit answers. Check the game-by-game player limits.
Remote setup: The host launches the title, shares the game screen over Discord, Zoom, or another service, and players visit jackbox.tv to enter the four-letter room code. Jackbox’s setup guide covers the process. Extend timers when the group is remote or the stream has noticeable latency.
Watch-outs: Player-created answers can include profanity or unsuitable material. Use the available moderation and profanity-filter settings, keep the room code private, and remember that the host—not every participant—needs the purchase.
4. Board Game Arena — best for serious online board games
What it is: A browser platform containing digital versions of strategy, card, abstract, and modern board games. It supports both real-time matches and turn-based games that can continue around different schedules.
Cost and access: Many games can be played free, while some titles or hosting configurations require premium access. It works through browsers on computers and mobile devices. Check the current catalog and table requirements rather than assuming every title follows the same access model.
Why play: It is ideal for a weekly group that likes rules, planning, and longer-term strategy. Turn-based play is particularly useful when friends live in different time zones.
Watch-outs: The platform can feel slow or rules-heavy to people expecting a party game. Learn the chosen game’s rules before inviting a large group.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →5. Tabletop Simulator — best virtual tabletop sandbox
What it is: A Steam sandbox that provides a 3D tabletop, physics-based pieces, RPG maps, miniatures, shared-screen play, VR support, and a large Steam Workshop ecosystem.
Cost and access: It is a paid Steam application. The number of players and the quality of the experience depend on the table or Workshop item. The Steam listing and its Workshop content are the starting points.
Why play: It can reproduce a favorite board game, support a tabletop RPG, or let a group experiment with custom rules.
Watch-outs: This is a tool rather than one polished game. Setup, rules enforcement, unofficial content, licensing, and component quality vary. Everyone generally needs access to the software, and the group may need to explain the rules itself.

What it is: Four to 15 players work as Crewmates completing tasks while one or more Impostors sabotage the ship and eliminate players. Meetings turn the game into a debate over evidence, lies, and suspicious behavior.
Access: Innersloth lists online and local Wi-Fi play for 4–15 players. Availability and pricing can differ by platform and version.
Why play: It is easy to explain, rounds are short, and a group can play several games in one sitting. Six to ten players is often easier to manage than a full 15-person lobby.
Watch-outs: Voice chat is practically essential for a friend group, but the social pressure is not for everyone. Players must be comfortable accusing, bluffing, and sometimes being eliminated early. Use private rooms and appropriate communication settings for children.

7. Fall Guys — best free casual competition
What it is: A brightly colored obstacle-course party game with short rounds, simple controls, and elimination-based shows.
Access: It is free-to-play and supports crossplay, cross-platform parties, and cross-progression on supported platforms. You can party with up to three friends, making a party of four. The official game page has the current platform information.
Why play: It is approachable for families and mixed-skill groups. Players do not need to understand a large rule set before joining.
Watch-outs: A four-person party is not the same as a four-person show: each show contains many competitors, and friends can be eliminated before others. Eliminated players may spend time spectating.
Best free competitive games
8. Fortnite — best all-purpose cross-platform choice
What it is: The name now covers several experiences, including Battle Royale, Creative islands, and team-oriented modes. That variety is why it can work for both competitive players and casual groups.

Access: It is free-to-play, supports parties across supported console, PC, and mobile platforms, and uses Epic accounts and platform privacy settings. Epic says some modes with Large Party Support, such as Creative and Team Rumble, can accommodate parties of up to 16; the limit is mode-specific. See Epic’s friend and party guidance.
Why play: It is the strongest default when friends use different systems or cannot agree on one genre. You can choose a serious battle royale, a user-created island, or a less demanding team mode.
Watch-outs: Free-to-play does not mean free of optional purchases. Voice chat, matchmaking, parental controls, age settings, and user-created content need separate attention. Create a private party and check who can join before sharing usernames or invitations.

9. Rocket League — best for quick competitive matches
What it is: Soccer played with rocket-powered cars. The basic idea takes seconds to understand, but aerial shots, positioning, and team rotation create a very high skill ceiling.
Access: It is free-to-play and supports cross-platform progression through an Epic Games account. The official cross-platform progression explanation covers account linking and progress.
Why play: Matches are short enough for a 20-minute break, and private matches let friends avoid public matchmaking while learning.
Watch-outs: Easy to start does not mean easy to master. Experienced opponents can overwhelm new players, so begin with private matches, casual playlists, or training modes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute10. Apex Legends — best for high-skill squad competition
What it is: A fast battle-royale shooter built around character abilities, squad coordination, looting, and rapid decisions.
Access: It is free-to-play and supports cross-platform parties across supported PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC versions. EA says that when console players party with PC players, the group enters PC matchmaking; read the official FAQ before mixing inputs and platforms.
Important Nintendo warning: EA’s published cross-progression notice says support for the original Nintendo Switch ends beginning August 4, 2026, while current documentation refers to Nintendo Switch 2. Do not treat original Switch and Switch 2 as interchangeable; check the live support page before organizing a Nintendo-based group.
Watch-outs: This is a reflex-heavy competitive shooter with quick elimination. It is a poor first choice for non-gamers or anyone who dislikes intense matches.
11. The Finals — best destruction-heavy team shooter
What it is: A free-to-play team shooter set in destructible arenas. Buildings, walls, and cover can become part of the strategy rather than fixed scenery.
Access: Crossplay is supported across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Check the official site for current platform and account requirements.
Why play: Destruction gives coordinated teams more ways to attack, escape, or change the battlefield than a conventional shooter.
Watch-outs: It demands quick reactions and modern hardware. Crossplay does not make performance, frame rates, or input methods identical across platforms.
Best two- to four-player co-op games
12. Overcooked! All You Can Eat — best chaotic four-player co-op
What it is: Players prepare meals under time pressure, passing ingredients, washing dishes, extinguishing fires, and trying not to turn the kitchen into a disaster.
Access: It supports up to four players and cross-platform multiplayer across the Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch versions listed by Team17. Consult the official FAQ and do not assume that every Overcooked edition shares matchmaking.
Why play: It produces immediate teamwork and is easy to demonstrate. A 20-minute session can be satisfying, while a group can also continue through a longer campaign.
Watch-outs: Communication matters more than reflexes, but the timer can make the game genuinely frustrating. It is not ideal for friends who dislike pressure or blame. The original game, Overcooked! 2, and All You Can Eat should be treated as separate multiplayer products.
13. It Takes Two — best focused two-player campaign on the same platform family
What it is: A co-op-only adventure designed around two characters. Its puzzles, platforming, and minigames constantly require players to combine different abilities.
Cost and access: One player buys the game and invites the other through Friend’s Pass. Both players still need compatible copies or downloads for their platform family, and console players may need the relevant online subscription. EA explains the Friend’s Pass rules.
Critical compatibility warning: It supports cross-generation play within a platform family, such as PS4 and PS5, but it does not support cross-platform play. A PlayStation player cannot use Friend’s Pass to play with someone on Xbox, Switch, or PC.
Best for: Exactly two people who use the same platform family and want a structured campaign rather than an open-ended sandbox.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →14. Split Fiction — best two-player cross-platform campaign
What it is: A two-player adventure built specifically around cooperation, with both players moving through changing genres and set pieces that require coordination.
Cost and access: One person buys the full game and the second installs the free Friend’s Pass. Crossplay works across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Both players need Friend’s Pass installed, and crossplay requires an EA account. See EA’s Friend’s Pass explanation.
Why play: It solves the biggest problem with many two-player recommendations: friends can play together even when they own different supported platforms.
Watch-outs: It is exactly two-player. It is not a three- or four-player party game, and the platform-generation restriction matters—this is not a general PS4 or Xbox One recommendation.
15. Stardew Valley — best relaxed long-term co-op
What it is: A farming and life simulation game in which friends can develop a shared farm, explore, fish, mine, complete objectives, and gradually build relationships in the valley.

- 【Professional Gaming Keyboard】The 104-key full-size keyboard has a standard layout with F-keys (function keys) and a numeric keypad, and 26 Anti-Ghosting keys allow you to press multiple keys simultaneously. The quality of the built-in steel plate of the keyboard is very strong and durable.
- 【Professional gaming mouse】The mouse uses high-precision optical sensor, sensitivity is 7200DPI, 12000fps scan rate, 1000Hz tour detection rate, can withstand 40G acceleration and 400IPS tracking speed, can meet your fast browsing and game requirements.
- 【Upgraded RGB Lighting Gaming Combo】All the keys of the keyboard, the light bar on the bottom side of the keyboard, and the RGB lights on the side of the mouse will glow. Your fingertips dance on the designed floating keycaps and click on the hyper-responsive mouse, accompanied by rainbow-like RGB lighting, allowing you to instantly enter the cool game state.
- 【Perfect Ergonomic Computer Game Combo】The adjustable tripod keyboard makes your keys easier. The anti-slip material mouse that is more suitable for the hand can reduce your hand fatigue.Soft leather wrist rest made from smooth faux leather and memory foam for extra relaxation while gaming.
- 【High-quality Game Combination】The curved ABS keycaps are exquisite in workmanship, the built-in steel plate of the keyboard base is sturdy and resistant to falling, the non-slip ABS material mouse has a better grip, and the soft leather wrist-rest filled with memory foam is more textured. High quality allows you to choose worry-free.
Cost and access: It is a paid game. Co-op player limits, hosting behavior, and platform combinations vary by edition, so confirm the exact version before purchase at the official Stardew Valley site or the relevant storefront.
Why play: It suits a regular group that wants low-pressure progress rather than constant competition. It is also forgiving when players have different interests: one can farm while another explores.
Watch-outs: It is not universal crossplay. The host and the group’s schedules matter, and players who progress at different rates can make it harder to resume an old farm.
Recommended Free Tools
16. Terraria — best 2D sandbox for exploration and bosses
What it is: A side-scrolling world of mining, crafting, building, exploration, enemies, and boss progression. It combines the freedom of a sandbox with more combat and discovery than a conventional building game.
Access: It is a paid game, but multiplayer limits, servers, and crossplay depend on the platform edition. Check the relevant official storefront and platform support rather than assuming that every edition connects to every other edition.
Why play: It rewards a group that enjoys discovering systems and setting its own goals over many sessions.
Watch-outs: New players are not always told what to do next. Crafting, progression, and platform-specific multiplayer behavior can require preparation.
17. Valheim — best survival world for a regular group
What it is: A survival and exploration game about gathering resources, building bases, sailing, defeating bosses, and expanding into increasingly dangerous biomes.
Players and access: Servers are capped at 10 players. A host can run a peer-to-peer session or a dedicated server. Iron Gate documents cross-platform joining through a server join code in its FAQ and crossplay instructions.
How to join: The host creates a private session or dedicated server, opens the pause menu to find the server join code, and sends it to friends. Friends choose Join Game, select Add server, and enter the code. A dedicated server is preferable if friends need to access the world while the original host is offline.
Version warning: Iron Gate announced September 9, 2026 for version 1.0. Until that date, do not describe the current game as the 1.0 edition; after the date, check the live FAQ and release notes for changes to crossplay or server behavior.
Watch-outs: Survival games require commitment. A missing player can delay progression, and a world may be difficult to resume after a long break. Mods can also break compatibility.
18. Sea of Thieves — best shared adventure stories
What it is: A shared pirate world of voyages, sailing, treasure hunting, naval battles, exploration, and encounters with other crews. The stories usually come from what goes wrong on the way to an objective.
Players and access: Crews range from one to four players depending on the ship; a Galleon supports four. Cross-platform play is enabled across supported PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5 versions. See Rare’s platform and crew information.
Why play: It is excellent for a full crew that enjoys talking, assigning roles, and improvising. One person can steer, another can navigate, and others can handle sails, repairs, or boarding.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Watch-outs: Open-world PvP means hostile crews may interrupt an otherwise cooperative voyage. Groups larger than four must split across crews, so it is not a seamless single-party recommendation for a large group.
19. Deep Rock Galactic — best mission-based four-player co-op shooter
What it is: Up to four space dwarves mine and fight through procedurally generated, destructible caves. Class abilities make team composition and coordination meaningful.
Access: The game is available on PC and consoles, but crossplay is not universal. Its official FAQ says players cannot simply join across all platforms; Windows Store and Xbox ecosystem behavior may differ from Steam. Check the exact storefront pairing before buying.
Why play: Missions are self-contained, making it easier to play for 30–90 minutes without committing to a shared campaign.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Watch-outs: Do not recommend it as a universal crossplay game. The group also benefits from basic shooter skills and understanding each dwarf class.
20. Phasmophobia — best voice-driven co-op horror
What it is: Up to four investigators enter haunted locations, search for evidence, identify the ghost, and try to leave alive. Voice communication is part of the experience rather than a nice extra.
Access: The PlayStation listing confirms up to four online players and cross-input play. PC and current console support should be checked for the exact platform combination before purchase.
Why play: It creates memorable teamwork: one person watches equipment, another explores, and everyone tries to interpret clues while the situation becomes more frightening.

What it is: A co-op horror game about scavenging dangerous facilities for valuable scrap while trying to meet a quota and get back alive.
Access: The Steam listing describes official co-op for up to four players. It is a PC/Steam-focused recommendation.
Why play: Proximity voice chat, limited information, and improvised plans make failure as entertaining as success.

22. Dead by Daylight — best asymmetrical horror competition
What it is: One player is the Killer and four others are Survivors trying to repair generators and escape. It is competitive rather than cooperative in the strict sense, though the four Survivors must coordinate.
Access: It is available on supported PC and console platforms with cross-platform play. The basic match structure is one Killer plus four Survivors; current cross-platform comparisons provide a useful overview, but check the live platform support before purchase.
Why play: It works for a group of five that wants an uneven matchup and does not mind rotating who plays the Killer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWatch-outs: The unequal objectives can feel stressful, and the game contains horror themes and violence. Do not present it as a co-op game without explaining the Killer role.

23. Baldur’s Gate 3 — best deep RPG campaign
What it is: A large, choice-driven role-playing campaign with turn-based combat, exploration, dialogue, character builds, and consequences that can unfold many hours later.
Players and crossplay: Larian’s Patch 8 added crossplay and cross-platform progression among PC, Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. Multiplayer supports up to four players. The Patch 8 announcement includes the current crossplay details.
Why play: It is the best choice here for a group that wants a serious campaign with meaningful decisions rather than short rounds.

Crossplay with mods requires compatible mod versions on all participating systems.
24. Monster Hunter Wilds — best coordinated hunting campaign
What it is: Players track and fight large monsters, gather materials, craft better equipment, and return to hunt more difficult targets. The combat rewards learning enemy patterns and coordinating roles.
Players and access: Cross-platform coverage identifies support for up to three friends, making a four-player hunting party. Use the official Monster Hunter Wilds site and current platform listings for the exact supported systems.
Why play: It gives a regular group a clear long-term loop: prepare, hunt, craft, and attempt a harder hunt.
Watch-outs: The multiplayer flow and story requirements can be unintuitive. Some missions require players to reach particular points before joining, so the group should not assume that sending a simple invite solves every setup problem.
25. Mario Kart World — best large console racing group
What it is: A racing game designed for Nintendo’s newer console, with traditional races and larger online modes.
Players and access: Online modes support up to 24 players. It is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, not an original Switch game. Online play requires internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo details the requirements on its play-together page.
Why play: It is a straightforward choice for a large group that already owns Switch 2 systems. Racing rounds are short, so players can rotate easily.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Watch-outs: There is no cross-platform option, and owning the original Switch does not solve the hardware requirement. Treat it as a platform-specific recommendation, not a general crossplay game.
26. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes — best communication puzzle
What it is: One player sees a bomb and handles its controls while the other players read the manual and explain how to disarm it. No one person has all the necessary information.
Remote setup: This is not a conventional online lobby. One player can run the game while others receive the screen through Discord or another screen-sharing service; the manual can be distributed separately. The official site explains the format.
Why play: It works particularly well for two people and does not require every participant to own the game. It tests communication rather than aim or gaming experience.
Watch-outs: Screen sharing and reliable voice communication are essential for remote play. Players must deliberately keep different pieces of information visible to different people.
27. Roblox — best platform for many child-friendly game types, with supervision
What it is: Roblox is a platform containing user-created experiences, not one fixed game. Friends can move between obstacle courses, role-playing games, racing games, survival experiences, and countless other creations.
Access: The platform is generally free to access, but individual experiences, features, player limits, quality, and age suitability vary. Communication and friend features can depend on age checks and country.
Safety setup: Roblox provides controls for content maturity, communication, private servers, spending, and screen time. Review the current parental-controls overview before a child joins friends. Do not treat the existence of controls as proof that every experience is suitable.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why play: It is useful when a group wants variety and when children already know the platform.
Watch-outs: User-generated content, text and voice communication, monetization, moderation, and player counts differ from one experience to another. Use private servers or invite-only sessions where available and set spending limits.
28. Minecraft — best general-purpose shared world
What it is: A flexible building, survival, exploration, and creative platform. It can support a short creative session, a months-long survival world, a family building project, or a private server for a regular group.
The essential edition distinction: Bedrock Edition is used on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, mobile, and other listed devices and supports crossplay among supported Bedrock devices. Java Edition is used on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Java and Bedrock players cannot directly share the same Realm. Mojang’s edition guide and Realms information should be checked before anyone buys the wrong version.

Persistent-world setup: Choose the edition and Realm plan, create or select the world, invite friends using their Microsoft account or gamertag, and set permissions before sharing the invitation. Realms reduce the host-online problem, but a normal hosted world may still depend on the host being available.
Watch-outs: Confirm edition, platform, subscription requirements, and mod or add-on compatibility first. A Bedrock player cannot simply join a Java friend because both games are called Minecraft.
Choose by your group’s situation
If friends use different platforms
Start with Fortnite, Fall Guys, Rocket League, Minecraft Bedrock, Sea of Thieves, Split Fiction, Baldur’s Gate 3, Apex Legends, or The Finals. Then check the exact pairing. A game may support PC-to-console play but exclude a particular generation, edition, storefront, or mobile version.
For two people, Split Fiction is the clearest answer. Do not substitute It Takes Two if one person is on Xbox and the other is on PlayStation or PC: its Friend’s Pass does not remove the same-platform-family restriction.
If nobody wants to buy a game
Choose Codenames Online, Gartic Phone, Fortnite, Fall Guys, Rocket League, Apex Legends, The Finals, Among Us where the chosen versions support the group, or the free tiers of Board Game Arena.
Remember that free browser games, free-to-play games, and free guests are different things. A free-to-play game may contain battle passes or cosmetics, and a console may still have its own online-access rules. A paid game with a free Friend’s Pass is not a completely free game: one person still has to buy it.
If only one person wants to pay
The strongest choices are Jackbox Games, It Takes Two, Split Fiction, selected premium tables on Board Game Arena, and Minecraft Realms if one person is willing to pay the recurring Realm fee.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Separate two questions: who owns the game, and who pays for the server. Jackbox and the two Friend’s Pass games let guests join without buying the full title. A Minecraft Realm subscription pays for persistent hosting, but invited friends still need a compatible copy of Minecraft.
If players are not experienced gamers
Lead with Codenames Online, Jackbox, Gartic Phone, Fall Guys, Mario Kart World, Among Us, or Overcooked. The last one is easy to understand but becomes demanding in later levels.
Save Apex Legends, The Finals, Monster Hunter Wilds, Baldur’s Gate 3, Valheim, and Terraria for players who are willing to learn more complex controls, progression systems, or rules.
If there are exactly two players
- Split Fiction: the best cross-platform campaign, with one full purchase and a Friend’s Pass guest.
- It Takes Two: the best same-platform-family alternative.
- Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes: the best communication puzzle.
- Codenames Online: a quick competitive word-game option.
- Minecraft or Stardew Valley: better for an ongoing shared world.
If there are more than four players
Do not recommend a four-player co-op game merely because it has online multiplayer. Choose Jackbox, Among Us, Codenames Online, Gartic Phone, Mario Kart World, Board Game Arena, or Fortnite modes with Large Party Support.
Sea of Thieves is excellent for four, but a larger group must divide across crews. Phasmophobia, Deep Rock Galactic, and Lethal Company are not seamless large-group choices because their official co-op capacity is four.
If the group wants an ongoing world
Choose Minecraft for accessibility and flexibility, Valheim for survival and boss progression, Terraria for 2D exploration and combat, or Stardew Valley for relaxed farming and relationships. Sea of Thieves is different: it offers repeatable adventures, but not the same persistent base-and-world progression.
Persistent games create practical obligations. Decide who hosts, whether the host must be online, how the group handles different progression rates, and whether a Realm or dedicated server is worth the recurring cost. Mods and add-ons can also prevent friends from joining until everyone has matching versions.
Voice chat, privacy, and family safety
Voice chat is optional in some games and nearly part of the rules in others:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Essential or strongly recommended: Codenames Online, Gartic Phone, Sea of Thieves, Phasmophobia, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, and Among Us.
- Helpful but not essential: Minecraft, Valheim, Overcooked, and Baldur’s Gate 3.
- Built into the game or platform in some cases: Mario Kart World, Sea of Thieves, and several free-to-play shooters.
- Screen sharing is required for the remote format: Jackbox and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes.
For children and family groups, prefer private rooms and invite-only parties. Check whether voice and text chat are enabled, whether strangers can enter through a room code or invite link, and whether the game contains mature themes, horror, violence, user-created text, or spending mechanics.
Codenames, Gartic Phone, Fall Guys, and a correctly configured Minecraft world are generally easier family starting points, but no online game should be called universally family-friendly. Jackbox answers are player-created and may need profanity filters. Among Us depends on chat and social interaction. Roblox requires particular care because each experience is made and moderated differently. Roblox’s current controls include content restrictions, communication settings, private-server settings, spending limits, and screen-time tools; review the official parental-control documentation.
Setup guides and common failure fixes
Jackbox Games
- The host purchases and installs a Party Pack or standalone game.
- Launch the specific game.
- Share the game screen through a TV, Discord, Zoom, or another service.
- Players open
jackbox.tvin a browser. - Everyone enters the four-letter room code and a name.
- Players use phones or other browser devices as controllers.
- Turn on extended timers where available if the group is remote.
- Hide or password-protect the code if the session is streamed publicly.
If joining fails, make sure the host is sharing the game screen rather than only the desktop. Each player should use a separate browser device. Refresh the browser if the code is rejected, and check that cookies, JavaScript, WebSockets, and HTML5 are working. If answers arrive late, reduce stream latency or use a wired connection. Jackbox’s troubleshooting guidance covers additional browser issues.
Codenames Online
- Open the official online game.
- Select Create Room.
- Choose team and word-list settings.
- Copy and send the room URL privately.
- Start a separate voice or video call.
- Use the official word list or create a custom list.
No account or download should be required. If the game is difficult to manage, reduce the group size rather than relying on the 64-player technical maximum. Use the current official domain instead of an unaffiliated clone.
Minecraft
- Confirm whether every player has Bedrock or Java Edition.
- For Bedrock crossplay, ensure everyone is on a supported Bedrock device and signed in as required.
- Choose between a normal hosted world, a Realm, or another server.
- For a Realm, select the appropriate plan, create or select the world, and invite friends using their Microsoft account or gamertag.
- Set permissions and privacy before sharing the invitation.
- Confirm everyone has matching versions, add-ons, and mods.
Java and Bedrock cannot share the same Realm. Bedrock Realms allow the owner plus two simultaneous players on the basic plan or plus 10 on Realms Plus; Java Realms is a separate product. Check Mojang’s live Realms page for current pricing, regional availability, and plan details.
Split Fiction
- One player buys the full game.
- The second player installs the free Friend’s Pass version.
- Both players install the same current game update and use the required platform accounts.
- The owner sends the in-game invitation.
- Enable crossplay in privacy settings when playing across platforms.
- Keep both players online for the session.
The Friend’s Pass supports PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 crossplay, but both players must use the appropriate version and crossplay requires an EA account. If the invitation does not appear, check platform privacy settings, account linking, and version updates first.
It Takes Two
- The owner launches the full game.
- The second player downloads Friend’s Pass.
- Both players confirm they are using the same platform family or a compatible generation.
- The owner sends the invitation.
- Load the host’s save file and progression.
PS4 and PS5 can play together, but PlayStation cannot play with Xbox, Switch, or PC. Friend’s Pass does not remove that restriction. Console online-subscription requirements may apply.
Valheim
- The host creates a private or public session, or starts a dedicated server.
- Open the pause menu to find the server join code.
- Send the code privately to the group.
- Friends select Join Game, choose Add server, and enter the code.
- Use a dedicated server if friends need to enter the world while the host is offline.
The official server limit is 10 players. If someone cannot connect, first confirm the join code, server status, game version, crossplay setting, and any mod mismatch.

Game-night checklist
- Confirm each person’s exact platform, console generation, storefront, and game edition.
- Verify crossplay, not merely that the game exists on multiple platforms.
- Check the real active-player limit—not just audience, spectator, server, or modded capacity.
- Confirm whether everyone needs to buy the game, whether a Friend’s Pass works, and whether a server or Realm has a recurring fee.
- Check console online-subscription requirements, which can vary by platform and free-to-play status.
- Install updates before the scheduled session.
- Test voice chat, screen sharing, and browser permissions.
- Create a private lobby or invite-only room.
- Decide who hosts persistent worlds and what happens if that person is unavailable.
- Review age ratings, chat controls, parental controls, profanity filters, and spending limits.
- Never post a Jackbox, Codenames, or private-lobby code publicly unless you want strangers to join.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free online game to play with friends?
For a browser game with no download or account, choose Codenames Online. For free cross-platform video-game play, choose Fall Guys for casual competition, Rocket League for short competitive matches, or Fortnite for the widest range of modes. Free-to-play games can still include optional purchases and platform-specific online requirements.
What is the best online game for two friends if only one person wants to buy it?
Choose Split Fiction if the players use PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or Switch 2 and need crossplay. One person buys the full game and the other uses Friend’s Pass. Choose It Takes Two instead when both players use the same platform family; it has Friend’s Pass but no cross-platform play.
Can Java and Bedrock Minecraft players play together?
No. Java and Bedrock are separate multiplayer ecosystems, and they cannot play together through the same Realm. Bedrock supports crossplay among supported Windows, console, and mobile devices; Java multiplayer is for supported computer platforms. Confirm the edition before buying or subscribing.
How many people can play Jackbox together?
It depends on the individual game. Most Jackbox games support 1–8 active players, while some support 10 or 16. Extra people can often join as an audience, but audience members may not be able to submit answers. Only the host needs to own the Party Pack or standalone game.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are these games safe for children?
Some are easier family choices than others, but none should be treated as universally safe. Use private rooms, restrict voice and text chat, check user-created content, enable profanity filters, and set spending limits. Roblox experiences differ substantially, while Jackbox answers, Among Us chat, free-to-play communication, and horror games require particular supervision.
The Bottom Line
For the widest chance of a successful game night, choose Fortnite when platforms and preferences are mixed, Codenames Online when you want zero-cost browser access, Jackbox when the group is large, Split Fiction for two-player crossplay, and Minecraft Bedrock for a world that can last for months. Before anyone downloads or buys anything, verify the exact edition, player limit, crossplay pairing, account requirements, and online-subscription rules.
