One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf you want three very different reasons to try Apple Arcade, start with What the Golf? for comic, unpredictable puzzle levels, Sonic Dream Team for replayable 3D platforming, and Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition for a slower life sim with substantial included content. They are recommendations, not a guarantee that every subscriber will find the service worthwhile: the right pick depends on your preferred genre, devices, and whether you want short sessions or a game to return to over time.
Which Apple Arcade games should you try first?
These three picks make a useful shortlist because they cover distinct moods and play styles. The recommendations draw on TechRadar reviewer Dashiell Wood’s August 2026 hands-on ranking: he placed What the Golf? first, Sonic Dream Team second, and Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition fifth. That is one reviewer’s list, not an industry-wide consensus. The Disney game is included here over the list’s third-place rhythm game to make the group more varied.

What the Golf?: for playful surprises
This physics-based comedy game uses golf as a loose starting point, then repeatedly swaps the rules, mechanics, and sometimes the perspective. You may putt food, cars, or stranger objects toward a goal; the pleasure is seeing how each level bends the premise. Wood praised its long main campaign alongside daily courses, bonus episodes, events, and leaderboards, making it a strong option for both quick sessions and longer stretches of play. His August 2026 feature named it his top pick after sampling the catalog (TechRadar).
Sonic Dream Team: for platforming and replay
Choose this if you want momentum, movement, and reasons to revisit stages. Its dreamlike worlds mix rails, platforming, and Sonic-style homing attacks. Six switchable characters have distinct abilities, while rankings, challenge stages, unlockable powers, and collectibles give completion-minded players goals beyond reaching the end. Wood ranked it second in the same August 2026 feature. He described it as an Apple Arcade exclusive at publication time, but availability and exclusivity can change; check the current Apple Arcade listing before relying on that status.

Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition: for a cozy ongoing project
This is the pick for players who would rather tend a world than race through levels. Its activities include farming, decorating a home, customizing outfits, opening new areas, and spending time with Disney characters. Gameloft says the Arcade Edition includes the base game, free updates, and the The Storybook Vale and A Rift in Time Expansion Passes. It does not include Star Path seasons or the Premium Shop, because this edition has no in-app purchases. Those details are specific to the Arcade Edition and may change; see Gameloft’s edition information.
How to choose between the three
Use the kind of session you want as your first filter, then consider what keeps you playing:

- Choose What the Golf? for self-contained comic levels and variety. Its campaign is complemented by daily courses and other rotating or bonus activities.
- Choose Sonic Dream Team for active 3D movement and repeat attempts at rankings, challenges, and collectibles.
- Choose Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition for a continuing routine of quests, customization, and unlocking areas, with Disney and Pixar appeal.
Device support is another practical filter. Apple says Arcade Originals can be playable across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K, and Apple Vision Pro, while App Store Greats have a narrower listed device range; individual game support varies. Check the game’s App Store page for compatible devices and the controller icon. Apple’s Apple Arcade overview describes the service and its device categories.
Is Apple Arcade worth the subscription?
For US customers, Apple’s page listed the subscription at $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year when accessed in 2026. Apple also says a subscription can be shared with up to five family members, mentions a three-month offer with eligible new Apple devices, and offers Apple One bundling. Prices, regional terms, and offer eligibility can change, so confirm the current options at checkout. Apple describes Arcade as access to hundreds of premium games without ads or in-app purchases (Apple).

The subscription is easier to justify if you expect to play more than one game, share it with family, or value a catalog without ads and in-app purchases. It is a weaker fit if you mainly want one specific title, do not use a compatible Apple device, or have little interest in these genres. For scale, Wood’s August 2026 TechRadar feature said he sampled 279 games; that is his account of the titles he sampled, not Apple’s official catalog count. Apple describes the catalog as “hundreds.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a controller?
No controller is required for these recommendations. If you prefer controller play, it is an optional accessory for games that support it. Apple says Bluetooth Xbox, PlayStation, and other controllers can be used with iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro, but compatibility and features vary by controller and app. Check the controller icon on the individual game’s App Store page and confirm support for your exact device. Apple’s setup guidance is available for connecting a wireless game controller to an Apple device and its device-specific controller support information.
