If your Meta Quest headset—still commonly called an Oculus—won’t connect to Wi-Fi, first identify whether it can’t see the network, rejects the password, connects without internet, or keeps dropping. Restart the headset and router, then try a phone hotspot: if the hotspot works, focus on your home network rather than factory-resetting the headset. These steps apply to Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest Pro; menu labels can vary by model and Horizon OS version.
Identify where the connection is failing
“Connected” can describe several different stages. The headset first joins the router, then needs a local network address and internet access; Meta services such as the Store also need to be reachable. Use the symptom—not just the word “Wi-Fi”—to choose your next test.

Fix 1: Restart the headset and router, then reconnect
Start with a clean connection before repeatedly entering the password. Meta’s community guidance recommends restarting and gives the headset and mobile-app reconnection paths described below: Meta Quest connectivity guidance.

- Save your progress and remove the headset if needed. Use the headset’s power menu and select Restart if that option is available. If it is frozen, holding the power button for about 10 seconds can force a shutdown on some models; button behavior varies, so reserve that for an unresponsive headset.
- Unplug the router or gateway for about 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for its internet and Wi-Fi indicators to stabilize.
- Bring the headset within a few feet of the router for this test.
- In the headset, press the right controller’s Meta button (called the Oculus button on some older interfaces). Select the clock area to open Quick Settings, choose Wi-Fi, select your network, enter the password carefully, and select Connect.
- Alternatively, in the Meta Quest mobile app, open Devices, select the headset, open Wi-Fi, choose the network, enter its password, and connect. The app path requires the headset to be powered on and paired, the phone nearby with Bluetooth enabled and internet access, and the correct Meta account signed in.
- Check the connection by opening the Store, browser, or another app that needs internet access.
If the network still fails, move on to a different network test rather than repeating the same password attempt.

Fix 2: Use another network to isolate the router
A phone hotspot is a useful diagnostic and, when available, a temporary way to get online for setup or an update. It may use mobile data, so check your plan before downloading large files. A hotspot test is evidence, not a guarantee: success there makes a home-router problem more likely; it does not prove every headset component is working correctly.
If the Quest connects to the hotspot
Focus on the home router or internet service. Check that another device on the home Wi-Fi can reach the internet; a router cannot provide internet if the ISP connection is down. Then test the headset close to the router and inspect these settings in the router’s own app or administration page:

- Use a visible network name. If the router combines bands under a single smart-connect SSID, temporarily try separate 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz names instead. Band steering is not automatically incompatible; separate bands simply make this test easier to interpret.
- For a basic compatibility test, use ordinary WPA2-Personal or WPA2/WPA3-Personal security. Do not leave Wi-Fi open or permanently weaken security. If you change a setting for diagnosis, restore a secure configuration afterward.
- Check that DHCP is enabled and the router has addresses available to assign.
- Look for parental controls, MAC filtering or device allowlists, device limits, and client isolation. A guest network can provide internet while preventing devices on it from finding one another.
- Restart or update the router if its management interface reports firmware is available. Reduce congestion for the test by disconnecting unnecessary high-bandwidth devices.
If the headset cannot see the SSID, confirm that it is being broadcast and test within the same room as the router. Distance, obstructions, router band settings, and signal conditions are more useful things to check than retyping a password it has not been asked to enter.

If it fails on the hotspot too
Try a second independent network if possible, such as a different household’s Wi-Fi or another router, and keep the headset close to the access point. If it cannot join multiple known-good networks, proceed to the software and support steps below.

Public and managed networks
Hotel, airport, dormitory, and public Wi-Fi may require a browser-based sign-in page (a captive portal) that the headset cannot complete reliably. Work and university networks may require certificates, device registration, or WPA-Enterprise authentication; those require network-administrator support and are not the same as ordinary home Wi-Fi. Use a private network or hotspot to test the headset instead.
Do not assume that a newer router’s headline Wi-Fi standard makes every band available to every Quest model. For example, the Wi-Fi Alliance certificate for Quest 3S lists 2.4-, 5-, and 6-GHz capability, WPA2-Personal, WPA3-Personal, and Wi-Fi 6: Quest 3S Wi-Fi certification. That certification is for Quest 3S, not proof of the same capabilities on Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest Pro. A visible 2.4-GHz or 5-GHz personal Wi-Fi network is the safer cross-model troubleshooting test; a 6-GHz-only network is not a universal fix.

Fix 3: Update, refresh network state, then escalate
Install an available headset update
If the headset can connect through a hotspot or another network, check for system updates in its settings and install any available update. A phone hotspot can help when setup or an update needs internet, but mobile data may be limited. Menu labels and update availability vary by software release.
Forget and add the network again, if the option is available
Some software versions show a Forget network control and others may not. If you see it, remove the saved network, restart the headset, and add the SSID again. If you do not see that option, restart, connect temporarily to another network, then reopen Wi-Fi settings. Use Add network to enter the original SSID manually only if that option appears. The control is not guaranteed to be present in every interface.

Use a factory reset only after simpler tests
A factory reset may help if the headset’s setup or software state is corrupted, but it removes locally stored data and settings and requires setup again. It will not fix a blocked router, captive portal, or ISP outage. Do not reset before trying another network. If you decide it is justified, follow Meta’s current instructions for your model rather than relying on a button sequence that may differ by device or software version: Meta Quest Help.
Contact Meta when failures point to the headset
Contact Meta Support if Wi-Fi is missing from the headset, it cannot connect to multiple independent networks after available updates and recovery steps, or it repeatedly reboots or shuts down while connecting. Do the same if the headset has been dropped, exposed to liquid, or otherwise physically damaged. Check the retailer or Meta for any applicable return or warranty coverage; terms depend on region and purchase channel. Meta’s consumer-assistance form requires login: Meta consumer assistance.
Separate Wi-Fi internet trouble from Air Link trouble
A headset that can browse the Store but cannot find or stream from a PC has a different problem from one that cannot access the internet. For Air Link or other wireless PC VR, the computer and headset need suitable local-network connectivity. A guest network, client isolation, VPN, or poorly bridged mesh node can block local discovery even when the headset itself is online. Keep the PC and headset on the same local network and test a strong signal; Microsoft’s wireless mixed-reality guidance likewise emphasizes same-network connectivity and signal quality, though it is not a Meta Quest-specific support article: Microsoft Mixed Reality Link compatibility guidance.
For PC streaming, 5 GHz—or 6 GHz where both the specific headset and network support it—can be useful, but this is not a requirement for basic headset internet access. If the Quest connects to Wi-Fi and online apps work, troubleshoot the PC’s network path and local discovery rather than resetting the headset’s internet connection.
