You can play Warcraft III online without Battle.net through W3Champions for community matchmaking, GameRanger for some older game versions, or LAN play using the Legacy TFT 1.29 client. The right option depends on whether you want matchmaking or a game with friends, and on which Warcraft III client and patch you have. Blizzard’s offline mode by itself does not provide online matchmaking.
Choose the route that fits your game

1. Use W3Champions for community matchmaking
W3Champions is the first route to investigate if you want organized matchmaking outside Battle.net. Its launcher guide explains setup, and the service describes features including hostbots for interregional play. Follow its current setup guide and confirm that your client meets the requirements before installing. Those requirements may change. W3Champions is community-run, not Blizzard’s official ladder.
2. Try GameRanger only after checking your patch
GameRanger is discussed by Warcraft III players as an option for playing older versions online, but the available references do not establish compatibility with a specific current patch or provide current official setup documentation. Check that your exact Warcraft III build is supported before you follow a guide. Do not assume GameRanger is a guaranteed way to play the current Reforged client.
3. Arrange a LAN game with the Legacy client
Recent reports say the 2026 Reforged 3.0 update removed LAN from the main Reforged client, while LAN and offline play remain available in the Legacy client, identified as Legacy TFT 1.29. That client is reported to support LAN and offline play only. These details come from PC Gamer’s September 2026 report and Windows Central’s 2026 report, rather than a surfaced official Blizzard announcement. Check Blizzard’s current version menu and support instructions before setting up a session.

Friends on the same network
If everyone is connected to the same local network, a LAN session may be all you need. Blizzard’s offline-mode instructions say Bonjour must be installed for LAN in the setup they document. The page also says offline mode disables versus matchmaking and Battle.net social features; it may not fully reflect the Reforged 3.0 client change described above.
Friends playing from different homes
A virtual-LAN tool can make remote computers behave as though they are on the same network. WC3LanGame describes itself as a proxy for remote classic Warcraft III LAN games, not a matchmaking service, hosting service, or Battle.net replacement. Its documentation says direct internet play may require host port forwarding or another working NAT setup, and recommends using the host’s ZeroTier IP for remote play. This route connects players who arrange their own session; it does not provide matchmaking.

Why offline mode is not an online alternative
Launching Reforged in offline mode can help you play offline, but Blizzard says versus matchmaking and Battle.net social features are unavailable in that mode. It is therefore not a way to play online with friends by itself.

- Your goal: Choose W3Champions for community matchmaking; choose LAN or virtual LAN when you and your friends are arranging a session yourselves.
- Your client and patch: GameRanger’s compatibility depends on the game version, and Legacy TFT 1.29 is separate from the main Reforged client. Verify the exact installation.
- Your network: Local LAN is for players sharing a network. Remote LAN play may need a virtual-LAN tool or other network configuration.
- Who runs the service: Blizzard documents its offline mode; W3Champions, GameRanger, and WC3LanGame are community or third-party options.
If your aim is to keep an older Frozen Throne client rather than move to Reforged, treat that as a version-compatibility question: a community discussion asking how to play classic Frozen Throne online is not proof that a particular workaround is still supported.
