In Tom’s Hardware’s report on Steam’s September 2026 survey, 32 GB became more common than 16 GB among surveyed systems for the first time in the all-platform figures: 42.22% had 32 GB, versus 37.82% with 16 GB. AMD also approached Intel in reported CPU share, reaching 48.37% to Intel’s 51.63%. These are participant-survey figures, not a census of PC gamers or a recommendation that every player upgrade.

When did 32 GB overtake 16 GB on Steam?

The shift appeared in the September 2026 all-platform results reported by Tom’s Hardware. The report gives 32 GB a 42.22% share of surveyed Steam systems and 16 GB a 37.82% share. That puts the 32 GB category 4.40 percentage points ahead in that month’s reported figures.

Those figures describe the share of surveyed systems in each RAM-capacity category. They do not indicate how many gigabytes an individual player should have, nor do they establish that 32 GB is required to run games.

What do the September figures say about AMD and Intel?

In the same all-platform results reported by Tom’s Hardware, AMD accounted for 48.37% of surveyed CPU share and Intel for 51.63%. AMD was closer to Intel than a simple majority gap would suggest, but remained 3.26 percentage points behind.

How representative is the Steam Hardware & Software Survey?

Valve describes the survey as a monthly collection of data about the hardware and software customers use, and says participation is optional and anonymous. As Tom’s Hardware notes, the survey is “far from scientific” and may not reflect movement across the broader PC market. Treat it as a snapshot of participating Steam systems, not a census of gamers or all PC owners.

Does this mean you should upgrade to 32 GB?

No. A prevalence statistic says what share of surveyed systems falls into a category; it does not assess your games, workloads, current memory use, or computer’s upgrade compatibility. If you are considering more RAM, check the motherboard or system specifications for supported memory generation and capacity, available slots, and form factor before buying. The Steam survey cannot identify a compatible kit for your PC.
