34 Years Ago, Mortal Kombat Debuted After Early Plans to Feature Jean-Claude Van Damme

Mortal Kombat’s creators considered a game centered on Jean-Claude Van Damme, then moved on early. Co-creator John Tobias said the possibility shaped Johnny Cage’s Hollywood movie-star identity.

The original Mortal Kombat debuted in arcades in 1992 without Jean-Claude Van Damme, despite an early concept built around the Belgian actor. The series co-creator John Tobias later said the team moved on from the idea early, but that the possibility of Van Damme’s involvement helped shape Johnny Cage, the Hollywood movie star who made it into the game.

What was the original Van Damme plan?

Mortal Kombat co-creators Ed Boon and John Tobias initially considered centering the game on Van Damme, according to The Strong National Museum of Play’s World Video Game Hall of Fame account. The museum says Van Damme had already signed a deal to star in another video game. It does not identify that game or describe the terms of the deal.

In a 2020 interview with Game Developer’s David L. Craddock, Tobias recalled: “We pivoted away from JCVD pretty early in the process. I believe we had already developed the core of our game’s premise while we were in those talks, but the idea was that JCVD would either play as himself or as one of the characters in our story.”

That recollection establishes that Van Damme was considered for the project; it does not establish that he personally rejected it. The available accounts describe the team moving on and Van Damme’s other game deal, not the precise sequence or outcome of negotiations.

Was Johnny Cage based on Jean-Claude Van Damme?

Johnny Cage was not simply Van Damme inserted into the released game, but Tobias directly connected the character’s movie-star identity to the possibility of the actor joining the project. “Johnny Cage being a Hollywood movie star was directly influenced by the possibility of JCVD’s involvement,” he told Craddock.

That distinction matters: Van Damme did not appear in the original Mortal Kombat, while the idea of a famous martial-arts movie star helped inform one of its seven playable characters. The Strong describes the game’s characters as represented by digitized images of real actors.

When did the original Mortal Kombat come out?

The Strong records the original Mortal Kombat as a 1992 release. Men’s Journal’s October 8, 2026 anniversary article gives the specific American arcade debut date as October 8, 1992. That is the date behind the “34 years ago” framing; the museum’s record supports the year, rather than that exact day.

What made the game stand out?

The Strong describes a one-on-one martial-arts fighting game set around a tournament on a fictional island in Earthrealm. Players chose among seven fighters, each with individual special moves and backstories, and sought to defeat the sorcerer Shang Tsung. The museum says the four-person team developed the game over eight months.

Why is Mortal Kombat a Hall of Famer?

The Strong National Museum of Play inducted Mortal Kombat into the World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2019. Its account points to the game’s compelling gameplay, memorable characters, and sequels, as well as the public controversy surrounding its violence, as parts of its lasting impact.

The fatalities drew attention beyond arcades and became part of congressional debate about violent video games. The Strong says industry scrutiny led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board in 1994. The 2019 Hall of Fame induction came decades after the game’s 1992 release; it was not a release-year honor.
