343 Industries announced on October 6, 2024, that it was becoming Halo Studios, that future Halo projects would use Unreal Engine 5, and that multiple games were in development. The studio did not name those games at the time. Its Project Foundry footage was a research and training effort—not a new game. Halo Studios has since announced Halo: Campaign Evolved, a ground-up remake of the original game’s campaign, but that does not identify every project hinted at in 2024.
What happened to 343 Industries?
On October 6, 2024, 343 Industries announced it would operate as Halo Studios. The change was presented as more than a new label: the studio described a broader shift in its culture, workflow, and organization. Studio Head Pierre Hintze called it “a new chapter” in an Xbox Wire interview. The announcement did not say that the Halo series was ending or that the studio itself was closing.

The studio also said it was moving future Halo development from its proprietary Slipspace technology to Unreal Engine 5. At the time, Halo Studios said multiple games were in development, but did not reveal their names, release dates, budgets, or platforms. Its official announcement is available on Halo Waypoint.
Why is Halo Studios moving to Unreal Engine 5?
The explanation came from the studio, which said that maintaining a proprietary engine alongside developing Halo Infinite made it harder to concentrate on making games. Halo Studios’ stated aim was to spend less effort building and maintaining engine tools and more on development itself—not a published finding that Unreal has reduced costs or shortened production.

Development and hiring
COO Elizabeth Van Wyck said Unreal could help the team focus on games rather than tools and engines. The studio also pointed to Unreal’s widespread use as a potential advantage when recruiting developers and helping them get up to speed. Van Wyck described the change this way: “The way we made Halo games before doesn’t necessarily work as well for the way we want to make games for the future.”
World detail—and the feel of Halo
Art Director Chris Matthews cited Unreal features Nanite and Lumen as opportunities to expand Halo’s environments and visual detail. He described the creative goal as giving players more of the world to interact with and experience. These are aspirations, not benchmark results or proof of what a released game will look like.
The studio also said that the move must preserve what makes Halo feel like Halo: its lore, physics, weapons, animation, and the way Master Chief moves. The engine announcement was therefore about the development model as well as visual possibilities.
Was Project Foundry a new Halo game?
No. Halo Studios described Project Foundry as multidisciplinary research and process training: a way to explore Halo in Unreal and learn what building the series with the engine would require. The studio explicitly said it was neither a game nor a conventional tech demo. Its work included three environments: a Pacific Northwest-inspired landscape, the frozen Coldlands, and Flood-consumed Blightlands. What games are Halo Studios making?
The October 2024 announcement confirmed multiple projects were in development but did not name them. Halo Studios later announced Halo: Campaign Evolved, a ground-up remake of Halo: Combat Evolved’s campaign. The studio’s announcement describes that project, but does not establish that it accounts for every game mentioned in 2024 or provide a complete current slate. What about Halo Infinite?
In 2024, Halo Studios said Halo Infinite would continue to receive Operations and Forge updates built with Slipspace. That was the studio’s statement at the time, not confirmation of a current 2026 update roadmap.
Can you buy Halo: Campaign Evolved physically?
Official Halo community information says the Xbox and PlayStation retail editions include a physical case and disc. That confirms the announced physical format, not current stock or availability in every region; check the relevant platform and local retailer for current listings.
