A small 3D-printed fidget can play a preset Super Mario melody without electronics: drag its striker across a row of tuned plastic tines, and each tine twangs a note. Your hand controls the tempo, while the printed geometry determines the tune.
How the musical fidget works
Hackaday’s Donald Papp describes the device, designed by kida, as a mechanical music toy. It has a movable tab—called a striker—that you pull across the top of the assembled piece. As it travels, the striker catches and releases vertical tines one after another.

Move the striker slowly and the tune unfolds slowly; sweep it faster and the same sequence runs faster. Pauses, uneven strokes and repeated passes let the object function as a fidget as well as a melody player. Because the melody is preset, the main expressive control is timing.

Why a table can make it louder
Holding the toy against—or pressing it onto—a tabletop can increase its apparent volume. The table acts as a sounding surface coupled to the vibrating plastic. That does not turn it into an amplified speaker, and loudness will depend on the surface and how firmly the object is held.
What you can change
Hackaday reports that the design is readily modifiable for other tunes. Kida’s linked collection includes non-game melodies and instructions for making new versions. In practical terms, changing a tune means redesigning the tine sequence and the geometry that gives each tine its pitch, rather than merely swapping an audio file.

A useful way to think about a new version
- Choose a short melody that can be represented by a manageable sequence of notes.
- Assign each note to a tine and arrange the sequence in the order the striker will meet it.
- Adjust the tine geometry that controls pitch while preserving enough flexibility for the striker to release it.
- Keep the body and striker aligned so the moving tab can pass every tine without snagging.
Those are design principles, not a verified print recipe. The accessible feature does not publish dimensions or a tested workflow for creating a particular replacement tune.
