The San Francisco 49ers reportedly waived wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge with an injury settlement on October 1, 2026, after a knee injury. Hodge had played in all three of the team’s games, catching one pass for 18 yards. A return to San Francisco after he recovers was described as possible, not confirmed.
Why did the 49ers waive KhaDarel Hodge?
CBS Sports, citing ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, reported that the 49ers made the move because of a knee injury. The report did not provide a diagnosis, severity, or recovery timetable. It also said Hodge could potentially return once healthy; that is a possibility, not an announced plan or completed transaction. CBS Sports
According to the same report, Hodge appeared in all three San Francisco games before the move and recorded one reception for 18 yards. CBS Sports
What does an injury settlement mean?
The NFL Players Association explains that an injury settlement removes a team’s obligations to a player regarding the injury. Its general examples include the club’s obligation to pay for treatment until the player is cleared and the player’s claims to future salary for that league year. The union also notes potential effects involving later-season injury protection, postseason money, Super Bowl tickets, credited-season status, and active-player health insurance; some consequences depend on the settlement amount. Those are general explanations, not disclosed terms of Hodge’s agreement. The report does not state how much he received, what specific terms he accepted, or whether he will re-sign with San Francisco.
How is a waiver different from the settlement?
The waiver and injury settlement address different parts of the transaction. The NFL’s explanation of waiver mechanics says the system lets another team place a claim on a player’s contract before the player becomes a free agent. The settlement, by contrast, concerns obligations tied to the injury. NFL Football Operations
