4K 60fps YouTube Live Bitrate Settings for OBS on a 100 Mbps Connection

YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 4K 60fps. Here are the OBS settings and how to judge a 100 Mbps upload connection.

For 4K/2160p at 60 fps on YouTube Live, set OBS to 50 Mbps video bitrate with H.264, or 35 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. A measured, sustained 100 Mbps upload connection should have enough capacity on paper: YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload headroom, leaving about 80 Mbps for the stream and its traffic. That does not guarantee a stable broadcast on a shared or inconsistent connection.

Recommended OBS settings for 4K 60fps YouTube Live

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends different video bitrates depending on the codec. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measurements from a particular OBS version, encoder, or internet connection. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Setting Recommended value Notes
Output resolution 3840×2160 (4K/2160p) Match the resolution of the stream you intend to send.
Frame rate 60 fps YouTube’s encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps.
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 Choose a codec your encoder and workflow support.
Video bitrate H.264: 50 Mbps; AV1 or H.265/HEVC: 35 Mbps YouTube lists lower minimums—14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265—but those are not the recommended targets for this mode.
Rate control CBR Use constant bitrate encoding.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Audio AAC or MP3; stereo recommendation: 128 kbps Audio traffic is additional to the video bitrate.
Streaming protocol RTMPS recommended; RTMP also supported RTMPS is YouTube’s secure extension to RTMP.

Is 100 Mbps upload enough for 4K 60fps?

If 100 Mbps is the measured, sustained upload speed available to OBS, the connection has capacity for either recommended video bitrate in principle. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom; applying that guidance to a measured 100 Mbps upload gives an illustrative budget of about 80 Mbps. That is above both targets and leaves room for audio and variation, but shared network use or instability can reduce what the stream actually gets. The 80 Mbps figure is arithmetic based on YouTube’s headroom recommendation, not a separate YouTube limit. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

A plan advertised as “100 Mbps” may refer to download speed, not upload. Measure upload on the same connection and, if possible, under conditions similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube cautions that outbound speed can be lower than expected and that other people or devices may share the network.

Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube

OBS labels and available encoders can vary by version, operating system, and hardware. Use the YouTube values above wherever the corresponding controls appear, and confirm your selected encoder supports the codec you choose.

  1. Prepare YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Use its stream key in OBS; treat the key as a password and do not share or publish it. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain creating a live stream and connecting an encoder.
  2. Set the video output. In OBS, open Settings → Video and set the output resolution to 3840×2160 and the frame rate to 60 fps. Confirm that your computer and encoder can render the game and encode at this output.
  3. Configure streaming output. Open Settings → Output, select the streaming controls, choose a supported codec, and set rate control to CBR. Enter 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265, then set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. OBS may present these controls differently depending on the selected encoder.
  4. Set audio. Choose AAC or MP3 where available; for stereo, use YouTube’s recommended 128 kbps. Keep audio bitrate in mind as additional network traffic.
  5. Use RTMPS and enter the stream key. In OBS’s stream settings, choose YouTube and the available RTMPS option where supported, then provide the stream key from the Live Control Room. Do not expose the key in a recording, screenshot, or public chat.
  6. Check YouTube’s resolution handling. YouTube can detect the encoder’s resolution and frame rate automatically. If using a custom stream key, YouTube’s documentation describes manually selecting stream resolution in Live Control Room.
  7. Test before the event. Start a private or unlisted test if appropriate, with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream health and any alerts while testing and live; stop to correct problems before relying on the setup for an important event.

Plan for latency, stream health, and copyright

4K means normal latency

YouTube says its low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160p streams. 4K live streams are optimized for quality and set to normal latency, so there may be a delay between gameplay and what viewers see. If rapid chat interaction matters more than resolution, weigh that trade-off before choosing 4K.

Test the actual broadcast conditions

Run an upload speed test on the broadcast connection, check who else will be using it, and monitor stream health rather than relying on the internet plan’s headline speed. A disruption to the network can interrupt a stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the real event.

Use content you have the right to stream

Video bitrate and encoder settings do not grant permission to broadcast game footage, music, or other material. Check the relevant rights and YouTube policies for the content you plan to use, especially for licensed music or third-party material. Use the copyright safety checklist as a pre-stream rights check; it is not a substitute for permission or legal advice.

When to adjust the settings

  • Measured upload is below the recommended target plus headroom: reduce the stream’s bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate that fits the reliable upload capacity. Do not assume a brief speed-test peak is sustainable.
  • Upload varies or other devices share the connection: leave more margin than the illustrative 20% and retest with competing traffic present. A nominally sufficient peak speed may not prevent dropped frames.
  • Your encoder does not offer AV1 or H.265: use H.264 at YouTube’s 50 Mbps recommendation if the connection and hardware can sustain it.
  • YouTube reports a resolution or frame-rate mismatch: verify OBS’s output settings and the stream settings in Live Control Room, including manual resolution selection for a custom stream key if needed.

Troubleshooting common 4K streaming problems

Symptom Likely check What to do
Stream health warns of insufficient or unstable bitrate Actual upload speed, network sharing, and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable Test upload on the broadcast connection, reduce competing network use, and lower bitrate or output demands if needed. Retest before the event.
OBS cannot select the chosen codec Selected encoder and hardware/software support Choose a codec exposed by the encoder you are using; H.264 is the alternative if AV1 or H.265 is unavailable.
YouTube does not show the expected resolution or frame rate OBS output settings and YouTube’s stream configuration Confirm 3840×2160 at 60 fps in OBS and check whether Live Control Room needs a manual resolution selection for your custom stream key.
Viewers experience delay despite a healthy 4K stream Latency expectations for 4K YouTube does not offer low latency for 4K/2160p; choose a lower resolution if lower interaction delay is the priority.
Stream stops during a network disruption Connection stability and YouTube’s stream-health messages Check the local network and upload conditions, then reconnect using the same stream setup and stream key if needed. Test recovery before an important broadcast.
