The Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE (2024) is the best overall gaming Chromebook for most buyers: its 16-inch, 2,560×1,600 120Hz display, Wi-Fi 6E, built-in Ethernet and gaming keyboard suit cloud gaming particularly well. The key caveat is what “gaming” means here: these Chromebooks are primarily for streaming games, not running demanding PC games locally. If you need reliable local AAA gaming, choose a Windows gaming laptop or a gaming handheld instead.
This guide covers the five models in the 2025 gaming-Chromebook shortlist. Because several are older designs and the current date is 2026, treat the Lenovo and ASUS models—and the original Acer 516 GE—as clearance, open-box or refurbished possibilities unless you confirm new stock. No universal current price or availability is established for every model.
What gaming on a Chromebook actually means
A gaming Chromebook is usually a Chromebook optimized to stream games from remote servers. The server renders the game; your laptop handles the display, controls, video decoding and network connection. Google positions gaming Chromebooks around services such as NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Amazon Luna. Google’s Chromebook gaming overview also describes Android-game tools built into ChromeOS.
- Cloud gaming: Play supported games streamed from a service. This is the main way these laptops can show demanding games without a dedicated graphics processor.
- Android and browser games: ChromeOS supports Android games on compatible devices, along with games that run in a browser. Game Dashboard can map keyboard controls to touch-oriented Android games and offers capture and recording features where supported.
- Steam on ChromeOS: This is limited and game-dependent, not equivalent to Steam on Windows. Compatibility can depend on the Chromebook, ChromeOS and Linux support, the game, anti-cheat software and integrated graphics.
- Remote play: If you already own a gaming PC or console, remote-play software can stream from that device to a Chromebook. The game still runs on the PC or console.
In WIRED’s testing of the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE, lightweight Vampire Survivors worked well, while Dead by Daylight did not progress beyond its initial loading screen. That is one reviewer’s result on one device—not a prediction for every Chromebook or game. WIRED’s review also characterizes the Acer as a cloud-gaming device rather than a conventional gaming laptop.

Compare the five gaming Chromebooks
Specifications vary by configuration and region. The table gives the supported distinguishing details; check the exact SKU and listing before purchase. “Availability” describes the buying posture to take, not a guarantee of stock.

The newer Acer model’s configuration range comes from Acer’s product specifications. Lenovo describes cloud-service compatibility for its gaming Chromebook on its product page; its advertised streaming ceiling depends on the service, membership, settings, game and network. 1. Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE (2024): best overall
Why it stands out
The 2024 Chromebook Plus 516 GE brings together the features that matter most for a cloud-gaming setup: a large, sharp 120Hz screen, Wi-Fi 6E and built-in Ethernet. Acer lists Intel Core 5 120U and Core 7 150U configurations, 8GB or 16GB of memory, and SSD options from 256GB to 2TB, depending on SKU and region. It also includes an RGB keyboard with anti-ghosting and a 1080p webcam. Check Acer’s specification page against the precise model you are buying.
Who should buy it—and who should skip it
Choose it if you mainly play through GeForce NOW or another streaming service, want a built-in Ethernet port, and prefer a large 16-inch display for games and schoolwork. Skip it if you need a compact travel laptop, want demanding games installed and playable offline, or are comparing its price with an entry-level Windows laptop that has a dedicated GPU.

WIRED found that the display and keyboard are strong points, while the built-in speakers are less impressive. The review also notes that the 120Hz display can cost battery life and that there is no convenient lower-refresh mode for conserving it. 2. Lenovo IdeaPad 5i Gaming Chromebook 16: best potential bargain
Why it stands out
The Lenovo was one of the first purpose-built gaming Chromebooks, with a large display and a design aimed at cloud play. Lenovo lists compatibility with GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Amazon Luna. Its GeForce NOW claims include streaming up to 1440p and 120fps under the applicable service and hardware conditions; that is not a guarantee that every game will stream at that resolution or frame rate. Who should buy it—and who should skip it
Consider it if you find a well-priced unit from a seller with a clear condition description, return policy and warranty. It can make sense as a closeout or refurbished buy, particularly if you want a large gaming-focused Chromebook without paying newer-model pricing. Skip it if the price approaches that of the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE or the listing leaves the processor, memory, storage or condition unclear.

3. ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX34 Flip: best compact convertible
Why it stands out
The CX34 Flip’s 14-inch convertible format is easier to carry than a 16-inch gaming Chromebook and can double as a tablet-style device. RTINGS identifies a 14-inch FHD+ 144Hz display. However, the cited testing indicates the high-refresh mode may be limited to plugged-in use, with the display capped at 60Hz on battery. Who should buy it—and who should skip it
Choose it if you value portability and a convertible hinge, and expect to game near an outlet. Skip it if you want the largest display, need high refresh while away from power, or expect the convertible form to make local PC gaming more capable. 4. ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip: best larger convertible
Why it stands out
The CX55 Flip was part of the original cloud-gaming Chromebook generation. Google described that group as featuring high-refresh displays, gaming-oriented keyboards and wireless connectivity for streaming. The convertible design makes it an option for someone who wants a larger-format device for both laptop work and streaming games.
Who should buy it—and who should skip it
Consider it only if you find a discounted or refurbished configuration that suits your needs. It is an older product and may be difficult to find new; confirm the exact display, memory, ports and condition rather than assuming every listing matches. 5. Acer Chromebook 516 GE (2022): best older-model discount
Why it stands out
The original 516 GE established the gaming-Chromebook formula: a high-resolution 120Hz display, RGB gaming keyboard, Wi-Fi 6 and Ethernet. It remains relevant for streaming if the condition is good and the price is meaningfully lower than the 2024 Chromebook Plus version. Who should buy it—and who should skip it
Buy only when the discount is substantial and you can verify the battery condition, exact model number, memory, storage, support horizon and return rights. ChromeOS update support is tied to the exact model; look up its Automatic Update Expiration date rather than relying on the family name. Skip it if it costs nearly as much as the newer Plus model or the seller cannot document the device’s condition.

- Best overall for cloud gaming: Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE (2024), especially if you will use Ethernet and value its high-resolution screen.
- Best deal among purpose-built models: Lenovo IdeaPad 5i Gaming Chromebook 16, if the specific listing is substantially cheaper and comes with dependable seller protection.
- Best portable convertible: ASUS Vibe CX34 Flip, provided you are comfortable with its battery-mode refresh limitation.
- Best older-model gamble: original Acer 516 GE only at a meaningful discount with condition and support verified.
- Best choice for locally installed AAA games: none of these. Shop for a Windows gaming laptop or a gaming handheld instead.
As practical selection criteria—not universal minimum requirements—look for at least 8GB RAM, 128GB storage (256GB is preferable if you plan to experiment with Linux, Steam or many Android apps), Wi-Fi 6 or newer, and a comfortable keyboard. For a dedicated streaming machine, a 120Hz display and built-in Ethernet are useful priorities. A more powerful processor can help with ChromeOS multitasking and local apps, but it does not fix poor network latency or make an unsupported game compatible.
Check your network before paying for gaming hardware
For GeForce NOW, NVIDIA lists minimum bandwidth targets of 15 Mbps for 720p at 60fps, 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60fps, and 35 Mbps or more for streaming up to 2,560×1,600 at 120fps. NVIDIA recommends Ethernet for 1600p/120fps gaming on compatible Chromebooks. These targets are bandwidth guidance, not a promise of smooth play: latency to the service’s data center, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, network congestion and game support matter too. - Connect Ethernet for demanding high-resolution sessions when possible; use a USB-C Ethernet adapter if the Chromebook lacks a port.
- Use a compatible controller or a gaming mouse, depending on the game. Bluetooth peripherals can add their own input delay.
- Remember that server distance and service availability affect the experience; a fast home connection cannot eliminate a long route to the streaming server.
Set up GeForce NOW on ChromeOS
- Open GeForce NOW in ChromeOS and sign in to your NVIDIA account.
- Connect the supported game-store accounts that contain the games you want to play.
- Open Settings > Streaming Quality.
- Select the resolution and frame-rate mode your Chromebook, membership and connection can support. On a compatible device, NVIDIA documents manually choosing 2,560×1,600 and 120 FPS where available.
- Use Ethernet for the most dependable 1600p/120fps connection, and plug in the Chromebook for a demanding session.
NVIDIA says 120fps streaming requires an Ultimate membership. Service features, membership terms and plan details can change; check NVIDIA’s current membership page before subscribing. NVIDIA also notes that custom game settings can affect other devices using the same account.

Budget for the service and games, not just the Chromebook
Cloud gaming can reduce the need to buy a powerful laptop, but it does not necessarily make gaming free. GeForce NOW commonly depends on supported game access through an associated game store, except where a game is free-to-play or included through an applicable service offer. Acer says its GeForce NOW messaging covers more than 1,800 games, including more than 100 free-to-play titles; that is Acer’s service-related marketing, and the playable catalog and membership features can change. Other options include Xbox Cloud Gaming for people with suitable access and games in the current catalog, and Amazon Luna in supported regions. Catalogs, regions, plan terms and game access differ. Before choosing a subscription, check that your preferred games are available and work on the service in your location. Also account for any controller, mouse, headset, Ethernet cable or adapter you need.
What 120Hz and 144Hz do—and do not—buy you
A 120Hz or 144Hz panel can make supported gameplay and general screen movement look smoother, but display refresh rate and streamed frame rate are separate. A 120Hz screen does not guarantee 120fps output: the cloud service, membership tier, game, selected settings and network all have to support it. High refresh cannot remove network latency, and it may draw more power. When a Chromebook is the wrong gaming purchase
Choose a Windows gaming laptop or handheld instead if you need to install and run a broad range of PC games locally, play offline, rely on mods or anti-cheat compatibility, or require a dedicated GPU. A Chromebook is a better fit when you mainly stream supported games, play Android or browser titles, use remote play from a PC you already own, and want ChromeOS for school or everyday work. If you own a gaming PC, remote play can also turn an ordinary Chromebook into a lighter screen and control device without making it a local gaming machine.
