Minecraft’s built-in commands let you teleport, get items, change the weather or time, and spawn entities in a world where you have permission to use them. This guide uses “hacks and cheats” in the common search sense: it covers Minecraft’s own commands—not hacked clients or ways to bypass multiplayer permissions. The setting is called Allow Cheats in Bedrock and Allow Commands in Java. Minecraft’s official guide explains how to enable and enter them.
Enable commands in your world
The setting name and steps differ by edition. Before enabling cheats in Bedrock, consider the achievement consequence: Minecraft says turning them on permanently prevents achievements in that world, even if you later turn cheats off.

Bedrock single-player
- Open the world’s settings.
- Select the Game tab.
- Turn on Allow Cheats. This permanently disables achievement unlocks for that world.
Java single-player
- When creating a world, enable Allow Commands.
- For an existing world, open World Options and turn on Allow Commands.
Java: open a world to LAN
Pause the game, choose Open to LAN, and configure the game mode and Allow Commands option for players joining that LAN session. The host controls these settings.
Multiplayer servers and Realms
Commands require sufficient permissions. As Minecraft guide writer Duncan Geere puts it, “In multiplayer, you’ll need to have a high-enough permission level to be able to use commands.” If you own the server or Realm, you generally control those permissions; otherwise, ask the owner or operator. A command will not work for every ordinary player.

How to enter a command
- Open the in-game chat.
- Type a forward slash (
/) followed by the command and its arguments. - Use the suggestions that appear as you type. In the official guide, Tab autocompletes options and coordinates, while the up-arrow recalls earlier commands.
- If you are unsure what is available, enter
/help. Microsoft’s Bedrock reference says help can list commands and show the syntax for a named command.
Exact syntax and availability can vary by edition and game version. For Bedrock, Microsoft Learn’s command reference identifies permission levels and whether a command requires cheats; use the in-game suggestions and help to check what your version accepts.
Five useful Minecraft commands
These examples come from Minecraft’s official command guide. They are useful for different tasks, but require a world or session in which you have permission to use commands.

- Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles

| Command | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
/teleport [target player] <destination> |
Moves you or another player to a location. | /teleport Steve -200 64 300 moves Steve to those coordinates. The guide also shows teleporting Steve and Alex to -200 64 300. |
/give <player> <item> [amount] |
Gives an item to a player. | The guide’s example gives Steve ten diamonds. Check item naming and syntax for your edition and version. |
/weather <clear/rain/thunder> |
Changes the world’s weather. | /weather clear clears the weather. |
/time set <time> |
Sets the world’s time. | /time set 1000 sets morning in the guide’s example. Named options include day, night, noon, and midnight. |
/summon <entity> [x] [y] [z] |
Spawns an entity. | /summon minecraft:zombie summons a zombie at your current location in the guide’s example. |
Brackets and angle brackets in the syntax descriptions indicate argument slots; do not type the brackets themselves. For instance, replace <player> with a player name and <item> with an item identifier accepted by your edition. If a command or argument is rejected, check its spelling and version-specific syntax with in-game suggestions or /help.
Commands are not multiplayer permission bypasses
These are built-in tools for changing conditions in a world—not a way for an ordinary player to override server rules. Minecraft Help lists cheating and exploits that negatively affect another person’s gameplay among conduct that may lead to temporary or permanent account bans. Privately owned servers are self-moderated at the owner’s discretion, so follow that server’s rules and operator instructions. See Minecraft’s Community Standards.

What about hacked clients and Java mods?
A hacked client is not one of the commands in this guide, and it is not an appropriate way to gain an advantage on a server. Minecraft’s EULA permits original Java mods within stated limits but says hacked or modded versions of the game client or server software may not be distributed. Minecraft Help also says Java mods are third-party software, not created, reviewed, or endorsed by Mojang Studios; a mod may malfunction or make the game unplayable, and Minecraft Support cannot assist with mod-related issues.
For policy details, read the Minecraft EULA and Minecraft Help’s Java modding support information. Those sources describe terms and support limits; they are not independent malware assessments.
