For most Android players who mainly want Nintendo 64 games, start with M64Plus FZ. Choose Lemuroid for a simpler free setup, RetroArch for deep customization, or ClassicBoy Pro if you want several retro systems in one app. Super64Plus is a fallback, not an equal first choice. This guide preserves the five-app 2023 lineup while reflecting app information checked on August 18, 2026; availability, prices, and updates can change.
An emulator imitates enough of the N64 hardware to run game software; it does not provide the games. Performance and compatibility vary by title, device, graphics driver, and settings, so no app can be promised to run every game perfectly.

The picks differ not just in interface. They package and expose emulation cores, graphics options, input tools, save handling, and Android file access differently. A useful test is whether your particular game works well on your device, not a promise that one app is universally best.

1. M64Plus FZ: best dedicated N64 option for most people
M64Plus FZ is the strongest first choice if your main goal is playing N64 games. It focuses on the console and offers multiple cores or video profiles, hardware-controller support, and settings that can help with game-specific glitches. That flexibility is useful, but it also means the first profile may not be right for every title. The Google Play listing explicitly warns that some games and devices have problems and that different video plugins may be needed (M64Plus FZ on Google Play).

- Choose it if: you mostly play N64 and are willing to try a per-game graphics setting when needed.
- Expect: a more N64-specific toolkit than a minimalist multi-system app.

The Pro edition’s listed additions are no ads, online cloud backup, and netplay—not a guarantee of better base emulation. It was listed at $3.99 in the United States when checked August 18, 2026; price can vary by country, taxes, promotions, and account (M64Plus FZ Pro on Google Play). Internet play has extra network requirements: the listing says online play requires UPnP and a router connection; local play on the same Wi-Fi network does not require UPnP. Treat netplay as something to test, not a plug-and-play guarantee.
Verdict: Start here for dedicated N64 emulation. The free edition is enough for many single-player users; consider Pro for its stated convenience and multiplayer features.
2. ClassicBoy Pro: best for a broad retro collection
ClassicBoy Pro is an all-in-one emulator with a Mupen64Plus N64 core alongside support for other classic platforms. It offers library scanning and organization, core options, touchscreen controls, and external gamepad support. Its appeal is having one app for a mixed retro collection rather than the most specialized N64 troubleshooting (ClassicBoy Pro on Google Play).
- Choose it if: you want N64 alongside other systems in one library.
- Trade-off: N64 is one part of a wider product, so a dedicated emulator may be a clearer place to diagnose a stubborn N64 title.
- Price note: the listing showed in-app purchases, not one universal upfront price; check the current listing for your region and edition.
Verdict: A sensible all-in-one pick, but not necessarily the best pure N64 option.
3. Lemuroid: best simple free option
Lemuroid is a free, ad-free, open-source multi-system app with N64 support through a Mupen64Plus-based core. It emphasizes library scanning, gamepad support, save states and automatic save/restore, customizable touch controls, local multiplayer, cloud-save synchronization, and Android TV support (Lemuroid on Google Play; Lemuroid project).

4. RetroArch: best for experienced users
RetroArch is a free, open-source platform that runs downloadable emulator cores. For N64, one option is Mupen64Plus-Next; the core documentation describes it as an up-to-date Mupen64Plus port (Mupen64Plus-Next documentation). RetroArch adds extensive remapping, shaders, overlays, cheats, save states, and other multi-system tools, but core selection and configuration make it the steepest learning curve in this list.

Android installation matters: Libretro’s Android guide says its Google Play versions are outdated because of Play Store policy changes and recommends the official download or an alternative app store for current builds. RetroArch’s platform page also labels the Play versions outdated (Libretro Android installation guide; RetroArch platforms and downloads). RetroArch Plus is intended for 64-bit devices running Android 8.0 or later and offers more cores than the regular Play Store version; check architecture and Android compatibility rather than assuming every device can use it (RetroArch Plus on Google Play).
- Choose it if: you already understand cores and want one highly configurable platform.
- Trade-off: directories, core installation, controller mapping, and per-core settings can be confusing at first.
- Recovery advantage: if one core has a game-specific glitch, testing another N64 core can be more useful than changing unrelated settings.
Verdict: The enthusiast’s choice, not the simplest path for someone who just wants to launch one game.
5. Super64Plus: keep it as a fallback
Super64Plus has been described as a free, ad-supported basic N64 app with ROM loading, saves, customizable touch controls, hardware-controller support, and some video options. Historical comparative coverage noted a less reassuring update history, but that status can change; verify its official Google Play listing’s current update date and terms before installing. It is a weaker first recommendation than M64Plus FZ for dedicated N64 use and than the broader apps for multi-system libraries (Android Authority’s N64 emulator comparison).

Verdict: Consider it only as a basic alternative if the leading options do not suit your device. Avoid APK mirror downloads.
Will your Android phone, tablet, TV, or handheld run N64 games?
There is no dependable one-line minimum specification. Results depend on chipset and GPU drivers, OpenGL or Vulkan behavior, the emulator core or plugin, the game, enhancements, and thermal throttling. A recent midrange or flagship device is generally a safer bet than an old entry-level phone, but it is not a compatibility guarantee. M64Plus FZ and Lemuroid both caution that individual games and devices can behave differently (M64Plus FZ listing; Lemuroid listing).
Start with a default profile and no enhancements. If a game struggles, reduce rendering resolution or disable shaders and texture effects before concluding that the device cannot run it. Android TV and handhelds can also have file-picker or removable-storage quirks even when the emulator itself runs.
ROM files and BIOS: what you need before setup
Common N64 game image extensions include .n64 and .z64; .v64 is also used. Some apps support compressed .zip or .7z archives, but support can depend on the app and archive method. A current Android frontend reference lists N64 extensions for M64Plus FZ and several RetroArch N64 cores; do not assume every format works everywhere (Daijishou player and file-extension reference).
- Use a verified, uncorrupted game dump you are legally entitled to use under the law that applies to you.
- Keep a clean copy outside the emulator’s save folder. Use recognizable filenames and retain the correct extension.
- If an archive does not load, extract it and test the uncompressed image before changing graphics settings.
- For ordinary N64 emulation, a BIOS file is generally not required; the same reference lists no BIOS requirement for M64Plus FZ or common Mupen64Plus RetroArch cores. Particular peripherals or unusual homebrew may have separate requirements.
Emulator software and copyrighted games are distinct: a free emulator does not include free games. Laws on copying and using game files vary by jurisdiction and circumstances, so this is general information, not legal advice. Do not use ROM download sites or bypass copy protection.

Set up an N64 game and controller
- Install from a reputable source. Use Google Play where the app is current and available. For RetroArch, follow the official Android guide and use its recommended current download route rather than assuming its Play build is current.
- Create a game folder. For example, use
Internal storage/Games/Nintendo 64/. Keep backups of saves separately from the ROM files. - Add your own game dumps. Start with an uncompressed
.z64or.n64image if you are troubleshooting an archive. - Grant access to the folder. Android’s file access differs by version and app. On newer Android versions, use the system folder picker when prompted rather than assuming an app can browse all storage.
- Scan or select the folder. Lemuroid and ClassicBoy Pro emphasize library scanning. In RetroArch, install an N64 core and load a ROM manually before building a playlist.
- Launch once with defaults. Confirm the game starts before enabling widescreen hacks, shaders, texture packs, or resolution scaling.
- Pair and map a controller. Test every input and save the profile if the app supports it.
- Verify saving. Make an in-game save where available and a save state; close and reopen the app to check that they persist.
In RetroArch, the specific core-download menu label can vary by build. Use the core downloader to install an N64 core such as Mupen64Plus-Next, then load the game manually. Save a per-game or per-core override only after the default configuration works.
Map an N64 controller onto a modern gamepad
The original N64 controller’s analog stick, four C buttons, Z trigger, L and R shoulders, D-pad, and A/B buttons do not map neatly to every modern pad. A practical starting layout is:

Before a long session, check analog dead zone, how quickly you can reach the C buttons, Z placement, left/right stick recognition, profile persistence after restarting, and which controller is assigned to each N64 port. No single layout suits every game: a first-person shooter, racer, and platformer may benefit from different profiles.
Touch controls can work for slower or turn-based games, but the N64’s many simultaneous inputs make them awkward for platformers requiring precision, racing, shooters, and multiplayer. A Bluetooth or USB controller is preferable for those. If buying a pad, prioritize Android compatibility, low-latency Bluetooth or wired USB-C, two sticks, four shoulder/trigger inputs, and remappable buttons; the placement of the C-button equivalents matters more than brand name.
Use in-game saves and save states safely
In-game saves are created by the game and are usually the safer long-term record. Save states capture the emulator’s current state; they are convenient, but can become invalid after switching cores, plugins, emulator versions, or ROM revisions.

- Use the game’s normal save system when available; use states as convenience or backup.
- Keep more than one state slot for a game.
- Back up both normal save files and states before changing emulator or moving files.
- Do not assume saves transfer between unrelated apps or between different ROM revisions.
- For cloud backup or sync, confirm synchronization has completed before uninstalling or changing devices.
Lemuroid advertises save states and automatic save/restore; M64Plus FZ Pro advertises online cloud backup. These features are useful, but a separate backup remains prudent (Lemuroid listing; M64Plus FZ Pro listing).
Troubleshoot common problems
The game is missing from the library
- Check that the file extension is supported and that it is not buried inside a nested archive.
- Extract the archive temporarily and try the image directly.
- Move the file to a folder the emulator can access, grant folder permission, then rescan.
- If scanning still fails, use the app’s manual file-selection option.
The screen is black or rendering is broken
- Close and relaunch the game.
- Try a different video plugin or core; M64Plus FZ specifically warns that some games need different plugins and some plugins do not work on every device.
- If the app offers it, switch between OpenGL and Vulkan.
- Turn off widescreen hacks, texture enhancements, and other modifications.
- Try an uncompressed dump and check that the file is not corrupted or an incompatible revision.
- Test the same game in a second emulator before changing unrelated settings.
Performance stutters or audio crackles
- Reduce internal resolution and disable shaders or texture packs.
- Try another graphics backend or core; do not assume one backend is always faster, because driver quality and game behavior matter.
- Disable overlays, screen recording, or aggressive frame skipping while testing synchronization settings.
- Check for thermal throttling and retest after the device cools.
Controls feel wrong
- Remap C buttons to positions you can reach quickly, and adjust analog dead zone.
- Try Z on a trigger rather than a face button.
- Create different profiles for games with different camera, racing, or platforming demands.
Saves disappear
- Check the emulator’s save directory and Android folder permission.
- Avoid moving or renaming the ROM after saving, and back up before changing ROM revisions or cores.
- Verify cloud synchronization has finished before uninstalling; do not rely on it as your only copy.
Android TV or handheld storage is inaccessible
Try manual file selection and check whether the picker can reach removable storage. Test the emulator itself before adding a separate frontend. Lemuroid advertises Android TV support; third-party Android frontend documentation also lists M64Plus FZ compatibility (Lemuroid project; ES-DE Android development notes).
Limits to know: accessories and native ports
Some N64 peripherals have incomplete or inconsistent support. Do not assume that a phone setup will reproduce every Transfer Pak feature, Rumble Pak behavior, Voice Recognition Unit function, N64 mouse, multiplayer adapter, or specialized homebrew accessory. A current homebrew compatibility document flags missing or problematic support for some Android N64 platforms, including Transfer Pak limitations (N64 homebrew compatibility document).
