They are not ranked by measured frequency; Valve and iFixit do not publish incidence data for them. Start with system updates and a restart when possible, and disable third-party Desktop Mode apps while isolating instability.
Steam Deck won’t turn on or charge
Connect the supplied power supply directly to the Deck and check the LED beside the charging port. Valve says a flashing LED after pressing the power button indicates a depleted battery. Confirm the LED is on, leave the Deck charging for at least 15 minutes, then try again. See Valve’s Steam Deck – Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.
If an already powered-on Deck is unresponsive, force a restart using the hold time for your model:
- LCD: Hold the power button for 4 seconds. If it remains unresponsive, hold it for 10 seconds.
- OLED: Hold the power button for 7 seconds. If it remains unresponsive, hold it for 16 seconds.
A Deck that has been connected to power for a long time may show less than 100% charge; Valve describes this as normal battery-health behavior. The Deck uses USB Power Delivery and does not support Fast Charging or Quick Charge specifications. If these checks do not restore charging or startup, contact Steam Support instead of assuming the battery needs replacement.

Steam Deck black screen or not booting
If you can reach the interface, install available updates and restart. If the screen is frozen and the Deck does not respond, use the LCD or OLED force-restart timing above. iFixit lists black-screen and boot-failure troubleshooting categories, but does not publish how often these problems occur: Steam Deck troubleshooting.
If the Deck still cannot boot or has a persistent problem, Valve provides recovery options, including rollback, factory reset, erasing user data, repair, and re-imaging. Choose based on the problem and your tolerance for data loss; a wipe is not a first-line fix. Valve’s recovery guidance explains the available choices: Steam Deck Recovery Instructions.

Back up anything important before choosing an action that erases data.
Steam Deck not recognizing an SD card
A microSD card must be formatted before use with the Deck. Insert it, then open Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card. Allow a few minutes for formatting to finish. Formatting is destructive, so back up important card contents first.

Valve’s supported baseline is UHS-I, class 3 or better. UHS-II and UHS-III cards are expected to work, but the Deck does not support their higher transfer speeds. A compatible card can add storage, but buying or formatting one is not a guaranteed fix for every detection problem. See Valve’s troubleshooting guide and iFixit’s SD-card troubleshooting category.
Steam Deck buttons not working or joystick drift
First check whether the problem affects the whole system or only one game. To test the Deck’s controls, open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs. The test can help identify which input is misbehaving.

If the control problem occurs in one game, inspect that game’s control layout and try an appropriate community layout before concluding that the hardware has failed. Persistent physical faults may require support or a model-specific repair. iFixit lists button failures and joystick drift among its repair topics: Steam Deck troubleshooting and repair categories.
Valve cautions: “We don’t recommend opening or otherwise modifying your device – any damage that results won’t be covered by your product warranty.” Rear-cover screw sizes differ by model: LCD products use Phillips #1 screws, while OLED products use T6 Torx screws. Steam Deck game crashes, instability, or poor performance
For system instability, install available updates and restart. Exit or disable third-party Desktop Mode applications and test again. If the issue is limited to one Steam game, try these steps:
- Check the game’s Deck Verified status.
- Where appropriate, try the latest Proton compatibility tool.
- Lower the graphics preset or individual settings to reduce system load.
For persistent stability or performance issues, Valve suggests trying the Steam Deck Beta; if the problem remains, contact Steam Support. These steps and the distinctions between game compatibility, settings, and system stability are covered in Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance.
A crash does not by itself show that the Deck has a hardware defect. Whether the issue affects one title or the whole system helps determine which troubleshooting path to follow.
