If your Lenovo Legion Go microphone isn’t working, first check which microphone Windows selected and whether its input meter responds. The cause is often a muted or misselected input, a privacy setting, or an app using the wrong device—not necessarily a hardware fault. Work through these five fixes in order, testing after each one.
These Windows 11 steps apply to the original Legion Go; menu labels and device names can vary with Windows builds, drivers, accessories, and Legion Go model. The Go can use its built-in microphone array, a headset through its headphone/microphone combo jack, or a USB or Bluetooth microphone.

1. Select the right microphone and raise its input volume
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Scroll to Input and select the microphone you intend to use. It may be the built-in microphone array, a headset microphone, a USB device, or a Bluetooth headset. The displayed name varies.
- Make sure the device is enabled and check its Input volume. Raise the slider if it is low.
- Speak normally and watch the input meter. If Windows offers a microphone test, select Start test, speak, then choose Stop test to review the result.
Also check any physical or software mute control on the headset or microphone, and disconnect and reconnect the accessory. Don’t assume a particular Legion Go button controls microphone mute; controls differ across models and software. If you’re using the 3.5-mm port, it is a combined headphone/microphone jack. A headset microphone generally needs a compatible four-pole TRRS plug, fully inserted; a headset with separate headphone and mic plugs may need an adapter. Lenovo’s Legion Go specifications identify the combo jack.

2. Allow Windows and desktop apps to use the microphone
- Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- Close and reopen the affected game or app, then test again.
The desktop-app setting matters for many programs, including Discord, Steam, browsers, and games. Those programs may not appear as individual switches in the app list. On a work- or school-managed Windows installation, an administrator may control these options; if a setting is unavailable, contact the device administrator. Microsoft documents these permission checks in its microphone guide. If the microphone belongs to a webcam setup, check camera permissions too, although that is less likely to apply to the Legion Go’s built-in microphone.
3. Test the microphone in Windows, then choose it in the app
A microphone that works in Windows can still fail in a particular game or chat app because that app selected another input, is muted, or has its own permission or voice settings.

- Test the mic in Settings > System > Sound or Windows Voice Recorder.
- If Windows records your voice, open the affected app’s voice or audio settings. Look for Microphone, Input Device, or similar, and select the same device explicitly rather than relying on Default.
- Check the app’s mute, push-to-talk, and voice-activation or input-threshold settings. Restart the app after changing its input.
For example, Discord’s representative route is User Settings > Voice & Video > Input Device. In Teams, check the microphone in device settings; in a game or Steam voice chat, look in the game’s audio or voice-chat options. Browser calls may also need microphone permission for the meeting site. App menus change, so look for the equivalent audio or voice controls in your version.
Use the test to narrow the fault: If Windows’ meter or Voice Recorder works but the app cannot hear you, focus on that app’s input choice, permissions, mute, or processing. If the Windows meter never moves, continue with the system fixes below.

4. Temporarily disable audio enhancements and exclusive control
Audio processing or an app taking exclusive control can interfere with input on some setups. This is a reversible check, not a guaranteed Legion Go fix. It is especially worth trying if the microphone is intermittent, its level is unusually low or stuck, or the problem began after installing audio software or changing audio settings.
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select your microphone under Input.
- If Audio enhancements is shown, turn it off temporarily.
- If the classic sound panel and microphone properties are available, open the device’s Advanced tab and temporarily disable the option allowing applications to take exclusive control.
- Close audio utilities, virtual mixers, and streaming tools, then restart the affected app and test again.
Windows and driver versions do not all show the same options. If the change makes no difference, restore the original settings. Some users have reported input problems involving audio-processing software, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a Legion Go-wide defect: Legion Go user report and Lenovo user report.

5. Update or reinstall the Lenovo audio driver
If the microphone is missing, malfunctioning, or still silent after the checks above, use the audio package for your exact Legion Go model from Lenovo Support, rather than a generic driver-download site or an unverified Realtek package.

- On Lenovo Support, use Detect Product or search for your Legion Go model.
- Open Drivers & Software, select the correct operating system, and install the latest available audio-related driver listed for that device.
- Restart the Go and test the microphone again in Windows.
Windows Update and Lenovo’s product-specific driver page are separate routes; having updated through Windows Update does not necessarily mean you have installed the package Lenovo lists for your model. Lenovo’s audio troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking updates and reinstalling the audio driver when needed.

If the microphone or audio device is absent from Windows, inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Check Audio inputs and outputs and Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the audio device is present, you can try Update driver. If it is malfunctioning, choose Uninstall device, then restart Windows.
- If Windows does not restore the device, return to Device Manager and select Scan for hardware changes. Then install the Lenovo audio driver manually from the product page.
Microsoft also recommends restarting after uninstalling the audio device and scanning for hardware changes if needed. Avoid a factory reset as an early fix; it is disruptive and should only be considered after less invasive troubleshooting and a backup.
What to check if the five fixes don’t work
- The microphone is missing from Windows: Restart, check both Device Manager audio categories, run Windows Update, install the model-specific Lenovo driver, and scan for hardware changes. If the built-in mic remains absent after the correct driver is installed, firmware or hardware becomes more plausible.
- The device appears but its meter never moves: Recheck input volume, whether the device is enabled, privacy access, mute controls, enhancements, and whether you selected a headset mic that is not connected.
- The meter moves, but people cannot hear you: Check the app’s selected input, app mute, push-to-talk, voice-activation threshold, permissions, and whether restarting the app after changing devices helps.
- Only the 3.5-mm headset mic fails: Check for a compatible TRRS plug, full insertion, and headset operation on another device. Compare with a USB or Bluetooth mic if available. The Go’s port is a combo jack, not a separate microphone port.
- Only Bluetooth fails: Confirm the headset is connected to the Go and selected under Windows Input; the app may still be using the built-in mic. Disconnect and reconnect the headset if necessary. Bluetooth devices can switch audio profiles when their microphone is active, and voice quality may differ from wired or USB input.
- It started after an update: Restart after updates, then recheck permissions and the selected input. Install the Lenovo driver for the exact model. Roll back a driver only if Device Manager offers a previous version and the timing clearly points to that driver; the timing alone does not prove a particular Windows update caused the problem.
- No microphone type works: If built-in, wired, USB, and Bluetooth inputs all fail, investigate Windows permissions, audio drivers, and system-level audio before concluding the internal microphone is damaged.
If you need a temporary workaround, test with an existing USB or compatible 3.5-mm headset before buying anything. An external mic working while the built-in one stays silent narrows the issue toward the internal mic path, its driver, firmware, or hardware, but does not by itself prove which has failed.

Contact Lenovo Support if the built-in microphone remains undetected after installing the correct Lenovo driver, or produces no input across Windows tests and apps after a clean driver reinstall and multiple restarts. The case is stronger if an external microphone works but the internal one never does. Service options depend on your region, purchase date, and warranty status; check those details with Lenovo rather than assuming a particular repair or replacement remedy.
