5 Reasons the Nintendo Switch 2 Might Be Worth Buying

Nintendo Switch 2 makes the strongest case with exclusive games, upgraded hybrid play and compatibility with many original Switch games. Screen preference, battery life, compatibility and total cost matter too.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is worth considering if you want its exclusive games, a more capable hybrid console, or a way to keep playing much of your original Switch library. It is a less obvious upgrade for Switch OLED owners who prize the OLED screen, long handheld sessions, or a lower total cost. The right choice depends on what you want to play and how you use your console.

1. You keep the Switch’s three ways to play, with a larger and sharper display

Switch 2 retains handheld, tabletop, and TV play. Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch LCD with 1080p resolution in handheld mode and TV output of up to 4K. The system also supports HDR, VRR, and up to 120 fps in supported games and with compatible displays. These are maximum capabilities, not promises that every game will use them: 4K output is capped at 60 fps. Nintendo’s feature page has the specifications.

The display is LCD rather than OLED. For someone coming from a standard Switch, the larger 1080p screen and performance improvements may be attractive; an OLED owner should weigh those against the older system’s OLED panel and their own screen preference.

2. You want Switch 2-exclusive games

Games you cannot play on the original Switch are the clearest reason to buy the new system. Nintendo identifies Mario Kart World as exclusive, and TechRadar’s May 2026 feature discusses Pokémon Pokopia among the current exclusive lineup. The value of that catalog is personal: a game you are eager to play matters more than a general promise of newer hardware.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Because the lineup changes, check the current release information for the particular games you want rather than treating any short list as complete.

3. Much of your original Switch library can come with you

Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games can be played on Switch 2. That can make the move easier for current owners with a library they still use. Compatibility is not universal, however: some titles may not work or may have limitations. Some games also receive free updates or paid upgrades, which are separate from basic compatibility. Check Nintendo’s game compatibility information for the titles you care about before buying.

For digital libraries, Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage and supports microSD Express cards for game-storage expansion. The conventional microSD cards used with the original Switch are not supported for that purpose on Switch 2. An additional card is optional, but may be useful if you expect to keep a large digital collection installed.

4. Some older games can benefit from the newer hardware

Nintendo says select original Switch games may have improved graphics and faster loading on Switch 2. In its hands-on review, Nintendo Life also observed faster loading and some frame-rate benefits in its own use. Those observations are not a guarantee for every game: results depend on the title, and Nintendo’s compatibility information is the place to check specific cases.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

This can be a welcome extra for someone who already owns older games, but it is distinct from a dedicated update or paid upgrade. Do not assume every game receives one or improves in the same way.

5. GameChat can make playing together more convenient

GameChat offers voice chat and screen sharing. For video chat, Nintendo says you need a separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 Camera or a compatible USB-C camera; a camera is not required for voice chat. Nintendo requires an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features including GameChat. Availability and terms may vary. See Nintendo’s feature details before counting this as part of your setup.

What to weigh before you buy

Price and total cost

Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 investor-relations material says the U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail price increased from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. It lists the European price rising from €469.99 to €499.99 on that date, and the Japan-only Japanese-language system rising from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980 effective May 25, 2026. U.S. prices exclude tax; European and Japanese prices include tax. These are official regional reference prices, not live retailer offers. Nintendo’s investor-relations notice gives the changes.

Nintendo Australia lists console SRP at AU$769.95 in Australia and NZ$969.95 in New Zealand; bundles have separate prices and availability. Check your local store for current offers, stock, taxes, and bundle contents. Nintendo Australia’s product page lists its regional pricing.

Budget for the games you want and, if relevant, storage, a camera, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. These are separate costs; not every buyer will need every add-on.

Battery life and screen preference

Nintendo Life’s 2025 review reports an estimated battery range of 2–6 hours and says its own testing broadly tracked that estimate, while noting that play could use power quickly. That is review experience, not a guaranteed runtime: battery use depends on the game and settings. If you often play away from an outlet or want long handheld sessions, factor that into the decision.

Accessories and compatibility

Game compatibility does not mean every old accessory carries over. Original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly but cannot attach to Switch 2, and the original Switch dock is not compatible. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for priority games and peripherals before replacing your current setup.

Should you upgrade from a Switch OLED or standard Switch?

Start with the games, then consider how you play. A first-time buyer is choosing a console; an existing owner is deciding whether Switch 2 adds enough to justify replacing a working system.

  • Consider buying if you want a Switch 2-exclusive game, want the newer hybrid hardware, or expect to benefit from compatible original Switch games on the new system.
  • Take more time if you are happy with your current library and mostly play handheld on an OLED, need long battery sessions, or would rather keep the money for games.
  • Check before committing if you rely on particular games or accessories, or if the full cost depends on storage, online membership, or a video-chat camera.

For current Switch owners, a specific game or a concrete benefit in how you play is a stronger reason to upgrade than the promise of better specifications alone.
