Meta Quest 3 is a standalone VR headset, so you can play without owning a gaming PC. The main trade-offs to understand before buying are its roughly two-hour battery life, the cost of comfort or battery accessories, and the price difference between Quest 3 and Quest 3S. Here are five practical considerations for deciding whether Quest 3 fits your setup and budget.
1. You do not need a gaming PC for Quest 3
Quest 3 is a wireless all-in-one headset: it runs Quest software on its own. A PC is optional, not a requirement for ordinary standalone play. If you want to use PC VR games, Meta supports Quest Link over a cable or Air Link wirelessly; that route does require a suitable gaming PC, and you may also want to budget for a cable. Meta’s Horizon OS device specifications, updated September 18, 2026, describe both the standalone and Link paths.
2. Quest 3’s display and mixed-reality hardware are key reasons to pay more
Quest 3 has a higher-resolution display and wider horizontal field of view than Quest 3S, along with a depth sensor. That matters if you care about visual detail, a broader view, or mixed-reality features that use depth information. Meta lists these specifications:

Meta lists up to 120 Hz refresh for Quest 3; the cited specification does not establish a directly comparable Quest 3S refresh figure. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every app runs at the maximum refresh rate.

3. Plan for charging after about two hours
Meta’s current specification gives Quest 3 battery life as approximately two hours. Actual runtime can vary with use, so do not treat that figure as a promise for every game or session. If you expect long play sessions, travel with the headset, or use it for fitness, plan for charging breaks or an optional external battery accessory.
4. The included strap may not be your preferred long-session setup
The stock strap is cloth, and comfort is personal; some buyers choose an aftermarket strap for a different fit or added battery capacity. That is an optional extra, not something included in the headset by default. Android Central’s Quest 3 accessory guide covers ergonomic straps, prescription inserts, face covers, and cases. It lists the BoboVR M3 Pro as compatible with Quest 3 and Quest 3S, with a 5,200 mAh battery. Check the current product listing for what is included and compatibility before buying, since accessories and bundles can change.

5. Compare the storage and price you can actually buy
Prices and configurations change, so date and region matter. PC Gamer reported that the US price of the 512 GB Quest 3 became $600 on April 19, 2026, after a $100 increase. The same report says Quest 3 launched in late 2023 at $650 for the 512 GB model and $500 for the 128 GB model; Android Central records the later move to 512 GB as the default Quest 3 configuration. Those historical launch prices are not current purchase quotes.
Meta’s explanation for the 2026 increase, quoted by PC Gamer on April 17, 2026, was: “We’re making this change because the cost of building high-performance VR hardware has risen significantly.” The $600 figure is a reported US price effective April 19, 2026; check the price and available storage in your region before deciding. Also account for any strap, battery, or other accessories you consider necessary for your use.

Quest 3 or Quest 3S: which should you choose?
The strongest case for Quest 3 is its sharper display, wider field of view, and depth sensor. Quest 3S has lower resolution per eye, a narrower horizontal field of view, and no depth sensor, but it can be a better fit if its price and storage options suit your budget and you do not value those hardware differences as highly. Both can be used for standalone play; PC VR is an optional path rather than a reason to buy one over the other.
Choose based on the experience you expect to use: prioritize Quest 3 if display and mixed-reality hardware are important; consider Quest 3S if you want standalone VR and are comfortable with its listed display and sensing trade-offs. Compare the actual local price and configuration for each rather than relying on older launch pricing.
