Error 2819-0003 usually means the Nintendo Account that owns a digital game or downloadable software is trying to use it on another console at the same time. The quickest fix is to close that software on the other console, then return to the HOME Menu on the console where play was suspended and resume the game. Don’t format your microSD card or reset the console for this error.
Nintendo’s current instructions cover Nintendo Switch 2, Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. Menu labels can vary slightly with system software.
What Nintendo Switch error 2819-0003 means
Nintendo’s error-code guidance describes an account-use conflict: the same Nintendo Account may be using downloaded software on another console. The on-screen message may say, “Suspending play. Someone else may be using this Nintendo Account to play the downloaded software on another system.” “Someone else” might be you on an older Switch, a family member, or someone with access to a console you sold or gave away. The code alone does not prove that your account was accessed without permission.
This is primarily a digital-software licensing issue, not a typical installation, hardware, or microSD-card error. If it appears while using a physical game card, check the code and message carefully; a downloadable add-on or a different error may be involved.

Five ways to fix error 2819-0003
1. Close the game on the other console
If you or someone in your household can reach the other console, start here. Nintendo recommends stopping use of the software there and resuming it on the console where play was suspended.
- On the other console, close the digital game or downloadable software and return to the HOME Menu.
- If that console is asleep or offline, wake it and connect it to the internet before closing the game.
- On the affected console, return to the HOME Menu.
- Select the paused game and resume play.
2. Load the game as a virtual game card
Loading the virtual game card onto the console where you want to play can prevent suspension there. Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide explains the feature and its requirements.

- Select the user linked to the Nintendo Account that bought the game. Enter the requested PIN or account password if prompted.
- Select the game, then choose Load on This System.
- Launch the game from the HOME Menu.
The console must be connected to the internet to load or move a virtual game card, and it must be one of the account’s consoles that can load virtual game cards. If the option is missing, check for a system update. Loading the card may start a download if the game is not installed. Once loaded, other users on that console can also play the game.
3. Move the virtual game card from the Nintendo Account portal
If you cannot access the other console but can sign in to your Nintendo Account, use the account portal to move the card to the system you want. Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide provides the portal instructions.

- Select the target console and confirm.

The target console must be powered on or in sleep mode and connected to the internet for the card to load. If the portal says the system is not connected, wake it, connect it, and retry.
4. Unlink an old or inaccessible console
A Nintendo Account can have up to two consoles that can load its virtual game cards. If an old, lost, or sold console is still linked, Nintendo’s unlinking instructions explain how to replace it.

If you can use an existing linked console, begin the linking process on the console you want to use:
- Link the Nintendo Account to a user on the current console.
- Open Virtual Game Cards, select a game, then choose Load on This System.
- If prompted that two consoles are already linked, select Next.
- Review the linked consoles and choose Unlink beside the old system.
- Confirm, complete linking, and load the virtual game card on the current console.
If you cannot access any linked console, Nintendo provides an Account Home website method. That website unlink is limited to once per year. If you have already used it within the year and no linked console is available, contact Nintendo Support.

Unlinking ejects virtual game cards from the unlinked console; it does not itself transfer or delete save data. Nintendo treats save-data transfer as a separate process, and a transfer may remove the save from its source console. See Nintendo’s multi-console guidance before moving saves.
5. Enable online licenses, or start the game with its purchasing user
If the console does not have the virtual game card loaded, the online-license setting is another way to start eligible digital games and DLC. It requires an internet connection and does not permit simultaneous use of the same content on two consoles.
- Open the purchasing user’s profile from the HOME Menu.
- Scroll to Online License Settings.
- Turn Use Online License on.
- Connect the console to the internet, then start the game.
Nintendo’s online-license instructions describe the setting. If the game belongs to another user on the console, start it with the purchasing user unless its virtual game card is loaded on that system. Nintendo’s digital-purchase guidance explains access across consoles.

Will fixing the error delete save data?
Loading or ejecting a virtual game card changes where the digital game is authorized and available; it is not a save-data transfer. Unlinking a console ejects its virtual game cards, while save data remains on the console and software licenses stay associated with the Nintendo Account, according to Nintendo’s unlinking guidance. Do not start a save-data transfer unless you intend to move the save and have checked what happens to the source copy.
What not to do
- Do not format the microSD card as a first response. Nintendo’s microSD troubleshooting addresses cards that are not recognized or cannot be read, a different problem.
- Do not delete save data, factory-reset the console, or reinstall the game as an initial fix. Those steps do not resolve simultaneous account use.
- Do not buy a replacement console or pay for a repair before checking the account and virtual-game-card settings.
- Do not treat online licensing as a way around the simultaneous-use restriction.
If you still cannot play
Contact Nintendo Support if the virtual game card will not load even though the target console is online, you cannot unlink an inaccessible system, or the website unlink limit prevents you from removing an old console. If you do not recognize a linked console, treat it as a possible account-access issue: review account access, change your Nintendo Account password, and enable available account-security protections. If the displayed code is not 2819-0003, use the support instructions for that exact code.
