How to install Minecraft mods depends first on your edition: Java Edition uses modloaders and Java mod files, while Bedrock Edition uses add-ons activated for a world. For Java, you can install through a mod-management app, import a modpack, set up a loader yourself, or add individual mod files manually. The steps below cover those five practical routes and how to avoid common compatibility problems.
Before you install: check your Minecraft edition and compatibility
For any Java mod, check three items on its download page before installing: your Minecraft edition, the exact game version, and the required modloader. A mod built for one loader or game version will not automatically work with another. Mods may also depend on libraries such as Fabric API or other required files, which must be installed in the same mod environment. Fabric’s installation guide explains these compatibility checks and dependencies.

Java mods and Bedrock add-ons are different systems. Do not put Java modloader .jar files into Bedrock or expect them to work there; use Bedrock add-ons for Bedrock Edition.
1. Install a Java mod through a mod-management app
An app-managed profile is a convenient route when you want the app to organize the mod environment rather than manage the files and folders yourself. In the CurseForge app, open Minecraft, choose an existing profile or create one, then use Discover or Browse to find and install a mod. Launch the game from the app or through a supported configured launcher. CurseForge’s getting-started guide describes its modding environment and installation options.

Confirm that the profile’s Minecraft version and loader match the mod’s requirements. An app can make profile setup easier, but it cannot make an incompatible mod compatible.
2. Install a Java modpack through an app
A modpack is a curated set of mods and configuration for a particular game profile, not a single mod file. In CurseForge, find the pack through the app and install it as a profile; then launch that profile from the app or a configured launcher. Check the pack’s listed Minecraft version and loader, and use the pack’s own instructions if it specifies additional setup. CurseForge covers modpack installation and launch options in its Minecraft getting-started guide.

3. Install a Java modloader manually
Choose this route if you want to set up a loader profile yourself. The installation process is similar across common loaders, but use the instructions for the loader and Minecraft version your mod requires. CurseForge’s Java Edition guide covers installer-based Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt setups; Fabric also provides its own installation instructions.
- Check the mod’s requirements. Note its exact Minecraft version and required loader before downloading an installer.
- Run the matching loader installer. Choose the client installation for the required Minecraft version and complete the installer’s steps.
- Select the new profile. In the Minecraft Launcher, choose the installed loader profile and launch it once so the game creates its files and folders.
Installing a loader alone does not install mods. You still need compatible mod files and any required dependencies.

4. Add individual Java mods manually
Manual installation gives you direct control over which mod files are in a profile. First install and launch the mod’s required loader profile. Then place the compatible mod .jar files, plus any required dependencies, in that installation’s mods directory. Fabric documents these default locations:
- Windows:
%appdata%.minecraftmods - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods - Linux:
~/.minecraft/mods
If you use a third-party launcher or a separate game directory, use that launcher’s active game folder rather than assuming the default Minecraft directory. Select the matching loader profile when starting the game. Fabric notes that many Fabric mods require Fabric API, and advises downloading mods only from sources you trust; see its mod installation documentation.

5. Use add-ons in Bedrock Edition
Bedrock Edition does not use Java’s loader-and-.jar installation method. Its supported content route here is add-ons, which Minecraft Help describes as content you activate for a new or existing Bedrock world. Follow the Bedrock-specific steps in Minecraft Help’s add-on activation guide; the exact options depend on the add-on and platform.

| Route | Best fit | What you manage |
|---|---|---|
| Mod-management app | Installing individual Java mods with guided profile management | The app manages a modding environment and helps separate profiles |
| App-installed modpack | Installing a curated group of mods as one profile | The pack’s included mods and its stated version and loader requirements |
| Manual loader setup | Creating a Java loader profile without relying on an app-managed setup | The loader installation and selected launcher profile |
| Manual mod files | Adding or controlling individual Java mod files | The active profile’s mods folder and dependencies |
| Bedrock add-ons | Adding supported content to Bedrock worlds | Add-on activation for the chosen world |
There is no universal best route: an app can simplify profile management, while manual installation gives more direct control over files. Choose based on whether you are installing one Java mod, a complete pack, or Bedrock add-on content.

Fix common Java mod installation problems
If a mod does not appear or the game crashes, check these items in order:
- Confirm the active profile. Launch the loader profile or app-managed profile where you installed the mod.
- Check the game version and loader. Confirm that the mod, loader, and profile all target the same Minecraft version and loader.
- Verify the folder. Ensure the .jar is in the active installation’s
modsdirectory, not another profile’s folder. - Install required dependencies. Check the mod’s listing for libraries it requires, such as Fabric API, and add them to that same environment.
- Look for conflicts and errors. Remove recently added mods one at a time to identify a conflict, and inspect the latest game log for error details. CurseForge’s installation and troubleshooting guide also recommends checking logs and possible mod conflicts.
Minecraft Help states that modding Java Edition is not officially supported and that its support team cannot troubleshoot problems caused by mods. See Minecraft Help’s Java Edition mod information.
