‘500-Hour’ Order of the Sinking Star: What the Estimate Really Means

The 500-hour figure for Order of the Sinking Star is a nonbinding completionist estimate—not the time required to reach the end. Here’s what the reported design and playtime figures mean.

Order of the Sinking Star may take around 500 hours to complete—but that is director Jonathan Blow’s explicitly nonbinding estimate for a typical completionist, not a measured average or the time required to reach the end. The scale has a design rationale: the game reportedly combines mechanics from four puzzle games across six connected worlds. Whether that feels absorbing or exhausting will depend on how much of that possibility space you want to explore.

What does the 500-hour estimate mean?

In a December 12, 2025 preview, PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens quoted director Jonathan Blow describing the figure as a completionist estimate: “This is not a promise of any kind, but we estimate that, for a typical player, if they were to be a completionist, it might be around 500 hours of gameplay.” It is not an average derived from player data, a guaranteed playtime, or a requirement for finishing the story. PC Gamer’s preview was based on a short hands-off demo, rather than a full-game review.

The same preview says players can reach the endgame meter and leave without clearing every area. That makes the 500-hour number most useful as a signal of the game’s possible depth for players intent on solving everything—not as a forecast for a story-focused run.

How can the puzzles take that long?

Blow told PC Gamer that development began with four self-contained games, which the team then combined so objects from different worlds could interact. He described the aim as bringing those systems together to explore “this large possibility space that results.” In practice, that premise means puzzle-solving is not necessarily confined to one mechanic or one setting: abilities and objects can behave differently as systems meet.

The preview describes an overworld of six worlds, with more of its map revealed as players progress. It mentions block-pushing and colored-beam puzzles, alongside character abilities that change how movable objects behave. The official store description, as reported by PC Gamer, advertises more than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles; that is the product’s stated count, not an independent tally.

These details make the game’s complexity easier to understand, but they do not establish how difficult it is in full. The available account is a preview, not an independent assessment of every puzzle or a consensus from completed playthroughs.

How much time should different players expect?

Goal Reported estimate What the figure establishes
Progress through the story Not stated as a specific number in PC Gamer’s preview; it says players can leave without clearing every area. Every puzzle is not presented as necessary to reach the endgame meter.
Normal-pace play Up to 250 hours, according to the Order of the Sinking Star Wiki fan guide, updated September 24, 2026. This is a secondary estimate, not verified player data or an independently confirmed official figure.
Completionist play Around 500 hours for a typical player, estimated by Blow in PC Gamer’s December 12, 2025 report. Blow explicitly said it was not a promise; no measured completion-time dataset is established by the cited sources.

The fan guide says its normal-pace figure came from an IGN interview dated December 11, 2025, but the original interview is not established here. Treat that 250-hour estimate cautiously. Neither figure should be read as a player-data average, and the two sources do not provide equivalent measured playtime methods.

Is the game likely to feel exhausting?

The scale could be tiring for someone who feels compelled to clear every region and solve every puzzle: a completionist estimate of around 500 hours is a substantial commitment, and the reported design asks players to grapple with several interacting systems. But “exhausting” is a possible reaction to that scope, not a demonstrated consensus about the finished game. The preview evidence supports the scale and mechanical ambition; it cannot tell every player whether the experience will feel rewarding, frustrating, or both.

A practical way to approach the estimate is to decide what counts as finishing for you. If reaching the endgame meter is enough, the preview indicates you need not clear the entire overworld. If your goal is to see and solve everything, Blow’s figure gives a rough expectation—but it remains an estimate, not a deadline or guarantee.
