mGBA is the best default choice for most PC users. It is actively maintained, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, supports Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance, and includes features for accuracy, special hardware, local link functionality, and development. Its official download page currently lists version 0.10.5.
The other five options are worth considering for specific needs: VisualBoyAdvance-M offers the familiar classic interface, NanoBoyAdvance targets cycle accuracy, SkyEmu focuses on high-accuracy multi-system emulation, Ares combines several classic systems, and No$GBA remains useful for debugging and specialist link or e-Reader work.
These emulators do not supply games. Use game files obtained in accordance with the laws applicable to you, and download emulator software only from official project websites or repositories.

1. mGBA: best overall GBA emulator for PC
mGBA is the strongest recommendation for a new installation. It balances accuracy, speed, straightforward standalone setup, active project support, and a feature set that goes beyond simply loading standard cartridges.
The project supports GBA, GB, and GBC games. Its documented features include local link cable functionality, real-time clock behavior, motion sensors, rumble, solar-sensor support, Game Boy Camera, and Game Boy Printer support. That makes it a particularly practical choice for ordinary commercial games, ROM hacks, homebrew, and development builds.
mGBA also includes a built-in BIOS implementation. You can use an external BIOS when you have a legitimate reason and a legally obtained file, but downloading an unknown BIOS from a third-party site is neither necessary nor recommended.
Why choose mGBA?
- It is the best general-purpose starting point.
- Official Windows installers and portable archives are available.
- It runs on modern Windows PCs without demanding hardware for basic emulation.
- It supports features that many simpler emulators omit.
- Its development goals explicitly emphasize speed and accuracy.
Advanced shaders may require newer OpenGL support, even though basic emulation has modest requirements. For a clean pixel-art presentation, begin with integer scaling; use stretch-to-window scaling only if you accept possible image distortion.
Default keyboard controls documented by the project: A is X, B is Z, L is A, R is S, Start is Enter, and Select is Backspace. You can remap them in the input settings.
Who should choose something else?
Use VBA-M if you specifically want the traditional VisualBoyAdvance layout. Choose NanoBoyAdvance or SkyEmu if your priority is technical accuracy experimentation rather than the most mature everyday workflow. Choose Ares when GBA is only one of several systems you want to manage, or No$GBA for debugging and specialist legacy features.

2. VisualBoyAdvance-M: best classic alternative
VisualBoyAdvance-M is the open-source continuation of VisualBoyAdvance. It remains a sensible choice for users who remember the original interface and want a traditional standalone emulator with extensive configuration options.
Its official information lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support, including Windows x64, 32-bit, and ARM64 builds. Choose x64 on most Intel and AMD computers. Use ARM64 only on Windows-on-ARM hardware, and 32-bit only for a genuinely legacy 32-bit installation.
VBA-M ranks below mGBA for a fresh setup mainly because its visible official release information centers on version 2.1.9, dated March 2, 2024, while mGBA’s official download page lists 0.10.5. That does not mean VBA-M is unusable; it means readers should distinguish a familiar, functioning codebase from a project with a newer visible release cadence.
Best reasons to use VBA-M
- You prefer the original VBA-style menus and workflow.
- You need an alternative for a ROM hack or homebrew project that behaves differently in mGBA.
- You want broad, familiar options for video, audio, cheats, saves, and controls.
If its configuration becomes corrupted, the project documentation provides a Help > Factory Reset recovery path. Back up save files before resetting or reinstalling.
3. NanoBoyAdvance: best for accuracy-focused users
NanoBoyAdvance describes itself as a cycle-accurate GBA emulator. That makes it attractive to developers, emulator testers, and enthusiasts interested in hardware behavior rather than merely the easiest way to start a game.
It supports remappable game controllers, but it should not automatically be treated as the best beginner choice. Accuracy-oriented projects can involve more configuration, smaller documentation communities, fewer mature builds, or unexpected behavior with unusual ROM hacks and development software.
There is also an important maintenance qualification: the project’s GitHub page says development has moved from GitHub to Codeberg. Check the current Codeberg repository, release, supported operating systems, and installation instructions before relying on an old GitHub download or guide.

4. SkyEmu: a high-accuracy multi-system option
SkyEmu is positioned in the supplied coverage as a high-accuracy emulator with support for Game Boy-family systems and Nintendo DS, along with features such as controller support, fast-forward, rewind, cheats, and solar-sensor emulation.

Its multi-system and accuracy-focused design may appeal to technically minded users, but mGBA remains the safer general recommendation for a day-to-day GBA library because its download, feature, and BIOS documentation is clearer in the available official sources.
5. Ares: best when GBA is part of a larger library
Ares is a multi-system emulator rather than a GBA-focused application. Its appeal is consolidation: readers who also want to manage several classic Nintendo and Sega systems may prefer one project over maintaining separate standalone emulators.
That convenience comes with a trade-off. A multi-system emulator may expose broader configuration and system-specific choices than someone playing only GBA needs. Verify Ares’s current Windows builds, ARM64 availability, and GBA implementation on the project’s official page before downloading; the available research does not establish those volatile details sufficiently.
If you already use a front end, another option is BizHawk, which describes itself as a multi-system emulator with GBA support and tools for casual play, rerecording, and debugging. It is a tool-oriented environment, not the simplest first install for a GBA-only player.

6. No$GBA: useful specialist and legacy tool
No$GBA is better understood as a specialist Windows-oriented emulator than as the best modern general-purpose choice. It is associated with debugging tools and experimentation involving link functionality and e-Reader-related features, making it relevant to developers, preservation work, and users investigating unusual behavior.
For ordinary play, its older architecture and less convenient general-purpose workflow make mGBA or VBA-M more practical starting points. Do not assume that an old tutorial accurately describes the current No$GBA release or support status; verify the official project page before using it.

How to install and configure a GBA emulator on Windows
- Open the emulator’s official website or official repository. Do not use a generic “emulator download” site.
- Download the correct architecture: x64 for most modern Intel and AMD PCs, ARM64 for Windows-on-ARM, or 32-bit only for older 32-bit Windows.
- Run the official installer or extract the portable archive to a normal user-writable folder.
- Launch the emulator and open its input or controller settings.
- Map A, B, Start, Select, L, R, and the directional controls. Connect a controller before launching if possible.
- Load a legally obtained GBA game file.
- Confirm normal speed, audio, controller response, and fullscreen or scaling behavior.
- Create one in-game save and one save state.
- Close and reopen the emulator to verify that both saves are available.
Do not configure shaders, complicated hotkeys, or per-game overrides until basic loading and saving work. A simple baseline makes later troubleshooting much easier.
Do you need a BIOS?
Not necessarily. Standalone mGBA includes a built-in BIOS implementation and can also load an external BIOS, according to its official FAQ. For the RetroArch mGBA core, Libretro documents gba_bios.bin as optional; if used, it must be correctly named and placed in RetroArch’s system directory. See the Libretro mGBA documentation.

Save files, save states, and migration
Use normal in-game battery saves as your portability anchor. Save states are emulator-specific and may fail after switching emulators, changing ROM revisions, updating software, or applying a different translation or patch.
Before migrating, close the emulator and back up existing .sav, .srm, or emulator-specific save files. Keep the original copy untouched. If the emulator matches saves using the ROM filename, changing the game filename can make a perfectly good save appear to be missing.
If saves are not persisting
- Close the emulator.
- Check that the emulator and game folders are writable.
- If necessary, move the installation out of protected locations such as
Program Files. - Check the configured save directory.
- Confirm the game filename has not changed.
- Back up every existing save before testing a different setting or emulator.
- Never overwrite a working save with a newly created blank file.
- For VBA-M configuration problems, try Help > Factory Reset, then restore only the settings you need.
Common problems and fixes
Black screen or the game will not boot
- Confirm that the file is a valid, clean dump or correctly patched ROM.
- Try mGBA first, then VBA-M as a compatibility comparison.
- Do not assume an emulator failure proves the ROM hack is defective.
- Check whether the game expects unusual hardware or a specific BIOS configuration.
No audio, crackling, or delay
- Confirm the emulator is running at normal speed rather than slow motion or excessive fast-forward.
- Try the default audio backend and restart the emulator.
- Close other applications that may be consuming system resources.
Controller not detected
- Connect the controller before launching the emulator.
- Open input settings and map every button manually.
- Test the keyboard to separate an emulator issue from a controller issue.
- Remove duplicate virtual controllers or controller-mapping software.
- Save the profile and restart.
Slowdown or visual distortion
Basic GBA emulation should run comfortably on many modern PCs, but shaders can require newer graphics support. Start with native or integer scaling and default rendering. Stretch-to-window scaling fills the display but can distort the original pixel proportions; shaders change the appearance and may affect performance.

Special hardware does not behave correctly
Feature support is emulator-specific. mGBA documents support for motion sensors, rumble, real-time clock behavior, solar sensors, Game Boy Camera, Game Boy Printer, and local link functionality. A “link” feature may mean emulated local communication, not a physical connection to original hardware. Solar-sensor behavior may also require emulator-specific input or configuration.

Standalone emulators versus RetroArch
A standalone emulator such as mGBA or VBA-M is usually easier for a GBA-only player: there are fewer settings layers, clearer save locations, and no need to understand cores, drivers, directories, or per-core profiles.
RetroArch is a front end, not one fixed emulator. Its results depend on the selected core, such as the mGBA core or VBA-M core. It is attractive if you already use one interface for several consoles and want unified controllers, shaders, overlays, rewind, or per-game configuration. For a first GBA installation, however, the extra abstraction can make setup and troubleshooting less intuitive.
Download safely
Prefer the emulator’s official website, official GitHub or Codeberg repository, or a trusted package source maintained by the project or your operating-system distribution. VBA-M specifically warns about unofficial sites hosting unknown builds and states that it does not host ROMs.

Avoid ROM packs bundled with executables, suspicious advertising redirects, modified “preconfigured” packages, unknown BIOS downloads, and any site that tells you to disable antivirus protection or add security exclusions. The safest download recommendation is a first-party source—not a guarantee that every file encountered online is safe.
Legal boundary
Emulator software and copyrighted game files are separate things. An emulator does not automatically provide the right to download or distribute commercial ROMs. ROM and BIOS rules vary by jurisdiction and circumstances, so use games and firmware only in ways permitted by the laws applicable to you. This guide does not link to ROM repositories or BIOS-download sites.
Final recommendation
Install mGBA if you want one dependable starting point for GBA games on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Move to VBA-M for its classic interface, NanoBoyAdvance for its cycle-accuracy focus, SkyEmu or Ares for broader multi-system experimentation, and No$GBA or BizHawk for debugging and specialist workflows. Keep in-game saves backed up, use official downloads, and treat save states and unusual hardware features as emulator-specific rather than universally portable.
