If you want an iPhone game where people compete or cooperate in the same live match, these seven are the strongest free-to-download choices in the United States App Store. The list covers quick team battles, shooters, battle royale, pool, social deduction, user-created worlds, and five-versus-five strategy.
Here, “real-time multiplayer” means a synchronous match or shared session with public matchmaking or friend play—not asynchronous turns, scoreboards, gifts, or a mostly single-player game with an online feature. All seven are free to download and meaningfully playable without an upfront purchase, but “free” does not mean purchase-free: Apple’s freemium model allows optional in-app purchases, currencies, passes, cosmetics, and progression systems. The ordering is an editorial judgment based on live-play quality, ease of joining friends, variety, session length, learning curve, device demands, and how much meaningful play is available before spending. Real-time does not guarantee that every opponent is human. Tutorials, early progression, or low-population queues may include bots, and friend features can require an account, age permission, a party system, or an in-game connection.

Choose it if you want colorful, immediately understandable team action that works well in short sessions. Skip it if you want realistic weapons, long tactical rounds, or a progression system with little grind.
Brawl Stars combines compact player-versus-player formats with three-versus-three objectives and battle-royale-style play. Its touch controls and clear goals make it the easiest starting point here for someone who wants action without first learning a large inventory, map, or character system. Apple includes it in its real-time multiplayer recommendations; its official home is Supercell’s Brawl Stars page.
Friends can generally form a party before matchmaking, but the exact invitation flow, available modes, and progression gates are live-service details. Characters, maps, and balance can change through updates. Unlocks and progression may create a meaningful grind, while purchases can accelerate or decorate that journey; the game is free to start, not a promise of unlimited progression with no spending pressure.
2. Call of Duty: Mobile: best traditional shooter
Choose it if you want familiar first-person gunplay, loadouts, team modes, and a battle-royale option in one app. Skip it if your iPhone has little free storage, runs hot under sustained 3D play, or you want a game that starts instantly on a weak connection.

Call of Duty: Mobile is the clearest recommendation for players moving from console or PC shooters. It offers conventional competitive shooting alongside battle-royale content and a large seasonal ecosystem. Apple currently lists it among its real-time multiplayer and online-with-friends selections; the publisher’s product page is Call of Duty: Mobile.
Expect a substantial initial download, additional resource packs, and frequent updates; use Wi-Fi and leave more free storage than the App Store’s initial download alone suggests. Touch layouts take practice, and controller compatibility or competitive restrictions should be checked in the current version rather than assumed. Loadouts, currencies, events, passes, and licensed content can change, so free access should not be confused with a fixed or purchase-free economy.
3. PUBG MOBILE: best battle royale
Choose it if you enjoy looting, positioning, survival decisions, and coordinating with a squad. Skip it if you only have a few minutes or dislike being eliminated early while learning maps, weapons, movement, and inventory management.
PUBG MOBILE delivers the most deliberate battle-royale experience on this list. A large match rewards staying alive, choosing when to engage, and communicating with teammates; smaller arena modes, where available, can provide a faster alternative. Apple includes it in its current real-time and free-game selections, and the official site is PUBG MOBILE.

Full matches generally demand more uninterrupted time than arcade games, and unstable latency or packet loss is especially damaging in a large competitive lobby. Storage, battery use, heat, and regional editions vary by device and country. The game has a substantial live-service purchase ecosystem, but you do not need to treat every cosmetic, pass, or bundle as required for the core match.
4. 8 Ball Pool: best casual one-on-one game
Choose it if you want a readable two-player contest based on aim, angle, and patience. Skip it if you want team tactics, a broad selection of genres, or constant movement.
8 Ball Pool is synchronous multiplayer even though players take turns: both competitors share the same live match, respond to the other player’s shots, and race to clear the table. That makes it a natural choice for a quick friend duel or a public opponent without the complexity of a shooter. Apple includes it in its real-time and online-with-friends selections; Miniclip’s official page is 8 Ball Pool Multiplayer.

5. Among Us!: best social deduction game
Choose it if your group enjoys bluffing, accusations, discussion, and voting more than precision controls. Skip it if you do not have a reliable group or dislike voice and text communication.
Among Us turns a shared live session into a deduction game: players move through tasks, discuss suspicious events, vote, and attempt to deceive one another. Private rooms are usually the best fit for friends; public lobbies can differ sharply in age, behavior, moderation, and seriousness. Apple lists it among its real-time and free iPhone games, and Innersloth’s official page is Among Us.
Room codes, account requirements, chat options, and available modes can change, so use the current in-game menus rather than an old guide. For children or mixed-age groups, use platform privacy and parental controls, avoid sharing personal information, and consider private play with known friends. The game’s success depends more on the group’s communication and conduct than on hardware skill.

6. Roblox: best for variety
Choose it if your group wants many genres in one download, from obstacle courses and racing to role-play, survival, shooters, and social spaces. Skip it if you want one consistent ruleset, art style, player count, or moderation standard.

Roblox is a platform rather than a single game. Each user-created experience can have different objectives, controls, player limits, chat features, quality, and age suitability. Apple presents Roblox as a prominent online multiplayer iPhone title; the platform is at Roblox.com.
Inspect an individual experience’s description, rating, creator, privacy settings, and chat controls before joining. User-generated content means “Roblox multiplayer” is not one guaranteed format, and an experience that is fun for adults may not suit a child. Virtual currency and in-app purchases make spending limits, purchase approvals, and account security particularly important.
7. League of Legends: Wild Rift: best competitive strategy
Choose it if you want roles, objectives, team strategy, and a game that rewards long-term mastery. Skip it if you need a five-minute diversion or do not want your result tied closely to four teammates.
Wild Rift is a mobile five-versus-five MOBA. Teams select champions, develop strength during the match, contest objectives, and attempt to destroy the opposing base. It is the deepest strategic choice here and a stronger fit for experienced competitive players than for someone seeking instant arcade action. Apple describes it as competitive five-versus-five multiplayer; the official site is League of Legends: Wild Rift.
The learning curve includes roles, abilities, items, map decisions, and team communication, while a full match requires sustained attention. Touch controls are designed for mobile but still demand practice. Champion availability, balance, events, and progression are live-service details that can change, and PC League accounts, progress, or champions should not be assumed to transfer unless the current regional information confirms it.

- Fastest competitive start: Brawl Stars.
- Most familiar shooter: Call of Duty: Mobile.
- Best survival-and-squad focus: PUBG MOBILE.
- Best for two friends: 8 Ball Pool.

- Check the current United States App Store compatibility line, age rating, language availability, and in-app purchase information.
