7 Fixes for Apex Legends Lag on PS5

Use Apex’s Performance Display to identify whether PS5 lag comes from the network or frame rate, then follow the fixes that match the symptoms.

If Apex Legends feels laggy on PS5, first check whether the problem is network delay or choppy frame output. In Apex, go to Settings > Gameplay > Performance Display to show FPS, latency, and packet loss. High latency or packet loss points to a connection problem; low or unstable FPS points to a visual-smoothness problem. Work through the matching fixes below rather than changing display settings to solve network lag.

Why is Apex Legends lagging on PS5?

“Lag” can mean delayed responses caused by the network, or uneven visuals caused by frame-rate drops. Apex’s Performance Display helps separate them: FPS describes how often the game produces frames, while latency and packet loss describe communication between your PS5 and the game server.

EA defines ping as the time for game data to travel from your platform to a data center and back, measured in milliseconds; packet loss is data that fails to make that round trip. EA’s general guidance is that ping under 50 ms is particularly good, under 100 ms should keep the game running well, and above 100 ms may begin to cause lag. These are general guidance values, not a guarantee for every connection. EA’s Apex connection troubleshooting guide explains the measures and the in-game display.

How do I fix lag on PS5 Apex Legends?

1. Check Apex server status

If every data center shows high ping or packet loss, check EA’s Apex server-status guidance and the @PlayApex updates EA points players to. Service status can change, so check it when the problem occurs. If EA reports an outage or service issue, wait for it to clear and check again; changing your router cannot repair a server-side problem.

2. Choose the closest data center

At the Apex launch screen, before selecting Continue, select Data Center in the lower-left corner and choose the location closest to where you are playing. A distant data center can increase ping and packet loss because the data has farther to travel. If all listed centers still look poor, check server status before treating the console or home network as the cause. EA documents this route in its Apex lag guide.

3. Reduce Wi-Fi contention and improve router placement

EA lists shared Wi-Fi use, wireless connectivity, multiple background applications, and a blocked or distant router as possible contributors to connection problems. As practical checks, pause heavy household downloads or streaming, close unnecessary background activity, and move the router nearer to the PS5 with fewer obstructions. These steps may help local network conditions, but they cannot fix an EA service problem.

4. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet

If you can, connect the PS5 directly to the router with Ethernet and compare the Performance Display under similar play conditions. A wired connection is a useful way to test whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the problem; it does not guarantee lower ping if the server or internet connection is the bottleneck. EA recommends Ethernet for certain connection errors and identifies wireless connectivity as a possible cause of connection trouble. If you need a cable, Cat 6 is an option, not a required Apex accessory.

5. Restart or update when the symptoms call for it

EA recommends restarting Apex or the system for some error codes, restarting the router for specified connection errors, and checking for game updates when versions do not match. Use those steps when an error or update mismatch points to them; repeated restarts are not a universal fix for ordinary high ping. To check PS5 system software, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. PlayStation’s Connectivity Support also gives the internet setup path: Settings > Network > Settings > Set up Internet Connection. See EA’s Apex error-code guidance for the specific restart and update cases.

6. Use Performance Mode for FPS or visual stutter

Try Performance Mode only if FPS or visual smoothness is the issue. It affects frame output, not network ping or packet loss. EA says PS5 120 FPS mode requires a 120 Hz display and HDMI cables that support 120 Hz. EA’s listed setup is:

  1. On PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets and select Performance Mode.
  2. Open Settings > Screen and Video; set Resolution to Automatic and 120 Hz Output to Automatic.
  3. In Apex, open Settings > Video, choose Graphics Mode > Performance, and apply the setting.

If your display or HDMI cable does not support 120 Hz, the 120 FPS option’s requirements are not met. EA’s Apex FPS guidance describes the feature and setup.

7. Treat DNS changes as a conditional connection check

EA notes that unreliable DNS can cause internet connection trouble and that changing DNS may help in that situation. This is a general connectivity diagnostic, not a proven Apex latency optimization. Consider it only if you have broader connection or name-resolution problems, rather than changing DNS solely to chase a lower in-game ping. EA’s connection troubleshooting guide covers DNS.

If you see the exact ui/userinfo.nut error

EA documents a temporary PS5-specific workaround for the exact ui/userinfo.nut error: open Settings > System > Language > Console Language and choose English (United Kingdom). This is for that error only, not a general lag fix. See EA’s Apex error-code guidance.

Which fix should you try first?

What the display or symptoms show Start with Why
High latency or packet loss across data centers Check EA server status A service problem is not fixed by changing local settings.
One data center has better readings than another Select the closest suitable data center Distance can affect ping and packet loss.
Connection worsens when household Wi-Fi is busy Reduce contention, improve router placement, then compare Ethernet These checks help isolate local wireless conditions.
FPS is low or visuals stutter while network readings look normal Check display capability and Performance Mode These settings concern frame output, not network quality.
